Been plagued this summer by miniature lime-green grasshoppers that do a lot of damage - fast. Tried pretty much everything, but they seem impervious. Even gave the ol' pyrethrin a shot, and didn't get leaf curl like @Frosty78, but did manage to kill a tender Apollonia XX seedling, and hurt a couple of it's siblings.

The pic below is NOT one of the green grasshoppers, but was killed yesterday using the only technique I've got. Just bring your thumb straight down and squeeze them on the leaf....

If anyone has had success w/ an organic measure, I'd love to know.

Does lost coast plant therapy work on them? I don't have that here, would cost a bomb to ship here too, but seen heaps of north American growers rave about it.

Still out of stock on the mantid eggs, but was pleased to see a spider web entangle one of these tiny grasshoppers that are still popping up.
One more reason to love the garden spiders!!

Outdoor grows are AWESOME! There's bugs, gophers, squirrels, mice & fricking rats. Snails and slugs, aphids and spider mites.

Have I mentioned how incredibly AWESOME outdoor growing is? Just checking?

40+ years and counting. Greenhouses help and I can't believe what's available. Hoop houses like under $200 for 20'. Although they bring their own set of issues like PM and aphids. I can't seem to grow enough mantis
113071 (3).jpg
to control the bugs and now resort to several different insecticides
20220823_164723.jpg
Sucks no??

I feel ya man. I really got tired of 90+% moth larvae eaten bud. 5 mf'en months of effort and I'm not gettin' the good stuff. Oh hell no?

I've been through years where my few plants were seriously hit hard. One year not too long ago my seedlings were all eaten by rats ( wait for it)

I now have an electronic device in my sm greenhouse where I keep seedlings to repel rodents
20220823_163736.jpg

I've had hundreds of seedlings munched by slugs and snails
20220823_163636.jpg
1 handful for the sm greenhouse and 2 for the large the 1st of every month. One year the slimes got all my spring planting of tomatoes, peppers, squash, etc.

I've had to adapt with each new pain in the ass. And did ya hear about the last one? Electrical pump bit the dust, actually both pumps in both greenhouses.

If this were easy EVERYBODY would be doing it but it ain't, it's a chore, but as long as the reward is worth the effort then we'll all keep doing it. You're doing ok even with all the crap nature throws at ya?

Hey - thanks for the encouragement.....and I gleaned a lot from those pics. Have seen you mention Neem a bunch, but that's one I have honestly yet to try.
Definitiely worth it to take advantage of the outdoors, imo - even with the tradeoffs.
Have a lot to learn, still - and am so thankful for the PH peeps (including you) that keep shepherding me along!!!

You forgot about frost (as in freezing temps) lol.

I did because that hasn't been a problem here in sunny so cal. We usually get a few nights a year near freezing but that's it. Popping seeds and getting clones to root at those times of year are about the extent of the problems.

I did 2 years of indoor growing back in the stone age (late 70's) but for the cost I'd of been better off just buying a pound each year. Growing 3-4 plants from bag seed in a closet didn't provide enough to make it worth it, especially after sexing the plants. Our knowledge has increased a hundred fold since then and indoor has really evolved, and with LED's becoming dialed in the cost has gone way down.

I don't care how long someone's been growing there always seems to be at least one more new problem to overcome every year and that is part of the reason we love growing. It's not easy but with all the crap we have to deal with it's an awesome feeling when we are successful?

I fully get where you are coming from, my sarcasm didn't land tho.

If nothing new comes up you aren't changing anything. If you aren't changing you aren't learning. You also aren't adapting so even if shit is good now, you stopped learning, now you are behind.

Hope you don't ever have to deal with frost unless you move.

Damn sounds like Cali blows bro... ;) Maybe you can pick B up on the way ? The Rain or Wind storm that pops up now and then is the major plant killer here along with mold and some beetles, but the rest we simply don't have much of to worry about really. I mean if you miss that 108 degree weather you could go in the tent with the AC off for a few until you feel better :)

You forgot about frost (as in freezing temps) lol.

Am I the only one who relies on those ?? The beautiful colors, and not to mention the resin being "weather proofing" so the plant responds by increasing production of it.

This is what happens to a plant when you ignore everything you read and let it sit outside in 27 degree Fahrenheit weather and the genetics are "cool" with it (Haha see what I did there? :) )

20201012_153039.jpg
I know I've posted those before but, literally I was outside knocking snow off my plants that year (2020) and not a single plant died. Only lost maybe a few grams of the bud to bud rot from the freezing rain too. If it's got enough Resin, it usually is fine around here.

Yeah, come deal with some frost guys :) We need more Michiganders on here ;)

I've had the lone Jalalabad Star male to survive this year out in the front yard segregated for a bit. Took a pic today before moving it inside. Will let it mature a few days and collect a little pollen. Two Jalalabad females made it, and are very different from one another. Plan to just pollinate a branch of each. Will update with pics of the ladies soon @ExSitu

Decided at the beginning of the year to use up a 10pk of Mandala Kalichakra freebies.
Upon opening the tube, there were actually 8 seeds, and of the eight, 7 ultimately we're males...?

The lone lady has been doing good - just seems thirstier than most others. Took two Kalichakra males that performed best inside a while back and collected pollen. Brought the lady into a spare room today (different room, and far away from Jalalabad) for a single branch pollination. Just wanting the option to grow again in the future if it's a good one.

While applying an IPM spray this evening, I grabbed a couple of those green grasshoppers. The first pic is a stunned one that was flung against the ground pretty hard. Nothing seems to deter them, but I still don't have the praying mantis action happening. Have gotten pretty good at just grabbing them when they're spotted.

I have not, but have not forgotten the suggestion.

My local shop is out of stock - seems that maybe everyone down here in southern AZ is having a problem?

Nolo Bait

Praying Mantid Egg Cases

May have to place an internet order from someone else - Been dragging my feet hoping as the year progressed, they would fade away.

Thanks for the gentle reminder. Will see if I can get something ordered.
