What causes herms?

I’ll start with the “ I’m no expert “ disclaimer but I grew 3 runs of In House Forbidos from seed then 2 runs of clones and the 3rd run they popped Nans . The only difference was a change of tent temps leading into summer so it appeared to me the increased temp may have been the trigger . Although the temp was till in optimum range maybe that particular strain was less tolerant of temp fluctuations throughout the grow ??‍♂️ . “ I’m still no expert “

I got my temp up and everyone seems to be happy now. Note, door has been open for a few minutes. Before I opened it, the temp was at 83 and humidity was about 54. Checked it this morning after lights had been off for a while and temp was 71 and humidity was 60. Lights of seems alright, but I think I’d like to get the humidity up just a little during lights on. I’ll see how this works for a week or so. image.jpg

I have used those same controllers for a few years. They are great for getting an idea of temps and humidity but are not very accurate I've found. Ive gotten different temp/humidity readings than the Inkbird controllers in the same tent -up to 5 degrees and 10% humidity difference reading; probes 2" from each other. Yours may be fine, i just wanted to throw my experience out there. I keep a backup hydrometer/thermometer inside the tents to verify they are reading somewhat correctly.

🔥Freak Genetics🔥
Seems to me that plants like any under stress will throw nanners in a last ditch effort to keep going. Obv some more likely than others depending on genes . But throwing balls is more genetic imo. Just straight up confused. There are so many factors and variables that go into it though. From both us the grower and the breeder. So it's definitely not black and white and never will be. Jmho
I write down and remember what crosses give me trouble and try to make good decisions moving forward from that. And that's really the best anyone can do nowadays

I should have titled this thread differently. You absolutely hit the nail on the head by saying there are so many factors and variables and it definitely isn’t black and white. I was just wondering if it could have been something I did to induce it with four plants all at once. I really do appreciate all the inputs though, it’s got me thinking in other areas that I overlooked or just wasn’t 100% sure of!

Grower errors...so many even things like TIMERS

Overloaded timers...hit the thing with my thumb timers...or the digital POS that will just click to off if we have a brown out in summer or a hard surge.

:D

The bullshit problems i have had with timers and my fat thumbs.

12 12 from seed...yeah..dont do it.
Trust me, thats one of the first things I checked, was my digital timer. I went through all the settings to make sure they didn’t have a second set of on/off timing. I did, however, notice that the Smart Electrician brand digital timers don’t hold their time over the course of a few months. My veg timer was 15 minutes off of my phone time and the flower timer was 3 minutes off. Now I’m debating on getting just a mechanical timer.

I've personally had the drifting time with mechanical timers too.
No qc in our world anymore, only rush to market mentality.
Had great luck with these type thpugh, easy to set and holds time in brownout. 20220101_101649.jpg

if you’re running LED, try and make sure you keep the low stuff trimmed up. I suspect that super intense light up top, combined with low light conditions underneath will make a pretty ripe environment to herm. It obviously could be genetic, but if you’re seeing them across the board, it’s a good indication you’re stressing them into it. I don’t think that first pic has any anthems, maybe they might pop up out of those strange bracts, but I don’t see em yet. The second one does though, how far along is she? That looks like a flower trying to finish up under super bright lights. Mine do that here too if im too high too late into flower… too high for me is above 1200 par

One in each greenhouse for fertigation and they have been set 3 minutes apart and haven't missed a beat in 6 months. I can set my watch by them?
I'd say you may have gotten a bit lucky brother lol. I've had two of those and they both failed on me within a few months and are the reason I only use mechanical timers now!

Like @Skunky Dunk Farms says not enough QC these days, which isn't too surprising when everything is outsourced to countries with absolutely no semblance of labor laws or oversight. And things like timers are tough cause there just isn't a premium option. Like, there's no well known, super reliable brand even if you were willing to pay more for it.

I can't find a mechanical timer that allows me to run it for 1 minute 3 or more x's a day so I got these and they be rockin it. 7am, 11am and 3pm, 3 minutes apart. I hear the first in the large greenhouse go 3 minutes before the hour and 3 minutes later on the hour the other goes, for the past 6 months. I'll know pretty quick if they fail as I'm up and having coffee on the patio almost every morning for first fertigation and days off I rarely miss the 11 and/or 3pm fert.

There are high quality ones available if you look for “commercial” or “industrial” grade mechanical timers but they are usually hard wired and cost $80 or more. You can find them more often in farm or greenhouse supply places.

So speaking of timers, I’ve had great luck since switching to smart plugs. They allow me to log into Alexa or the devices own app and see that my lights are off, even when I’m not home. They also allow me to set redundant scenes if I set up a routine in both the devices own app and Alexa. My internet here is actually more reliable than my power company, so I usually only lose internet when the power is out anyway.

Regarding timers...i have a ton...but i have 1 GREAT timer.

Hydrofarm has a to the second timer....and that makes floraflex work right. You can rum a 5 GPM emitter for 5 to 20 seconds up to 8 times a day. And they are GOOD timers...rated higher for max wattage too (1575 watts max if memory serves).
