How about Dad dies when he's making repairs down on the dock and a broken wrench causes him to plummet into the icy water where "x" awaits him?
(feel free to define "x". it could be as obvious as a shark, or maybe it's 'Billy returning to surface after making sweet love to the catfish that lives under the dock)
