Currently -36C, with a forecast low of -44.

Having rarely hitting -15 all winter, this seems even colder and more dangerous than if we'd already had a few stretches in the deep freeze. That's all psychological, but still a trip.

-42 tomorrow and -37 Sunday before getting tolerable again.

burrr, that'll put the chill to ya quick. I've been out in -25 f never that cold though.

It looks like Northern MIchigan tonight here. Wind is whipping, snow flying and near zero visibility. Calling for some pretty gnarly gusty winds, that's what gets me. That wind coming in off Lake Michigan can be brutal. When the wind blows here and the temp is below freezing it snows, heavy at times. It's got this old house a vibrating.

I was telling someone the other day about the futility of working construction in -45 weather. You spend 1/3 of your time getting equipment started, 1/3 on warmup breaks to avoid frostbite, and 1/3 fixing/replacing all the stuff that broke because it wasn't designed for use in -45. This adds up to ~0 production. Keeps the pricks in the boardroom happy though.

I've never fished at -40, but have had times where it was -20 when we left home but -35 at the lake. If you can get setup you're okay, but that is tough. Every zipper, every propane fitting, every piece of plastic will break very easily. Propane freezes up so heaters won't start, you worry all day about if your vehicle will start when it's time to go home, it's just a stressful time. I won't do it alone. Down to -25, you can work with it, but after that it gets ugly.

The one time I was out in the -25 it was on the lake, we had the permanent shanty and stayed well after dark. If I remember right the daytime was in the single digits F but the sun was shining so it wasn't too bad, but once the sun started going down, dropped like a rock. It was neat because the moisture in the air was floating around like little diamonds, there was a huge full moon and you could see the cold in the air. Very eerie looking, you could feel the air and breathing felt a tiny bit labored and I was in my prime at the time.

Ain't no fun if it's stressful. Smart dude to stay home when it's no fun. I've been out on some stupid windy days and not once did I have a good time. Well, there was this one time I watched my Dad chase his bucket all the way across the lake. Boy, was he pissed, lost most all his tackle. It was a riot to watch though, he'd almost get to it, and it would take off again.

1/3 on warmup breaks to avoid frostbite,
And half the crew passes out, when they hit a warm spot.

-44C is lethal. Whereas, One may typically survive winter in an RV, but the tanks are usually propane and they're going to be on the outside. Encampments run on those bottles. That stuff goes liquid, and anyone relying on it to survive is boned, and right now.
Not good.

I was thinking today, about stuff that only happens when it's this cold.

The sheathing on the extension cord shatters, when you are trying to plug in your car.

Retail doorways won't swing shut anymore because of the thick layer of condensation frozen under the door.

Nearly doomed our hamster once, the hutch was too close to an outside wall.

My dead bolt key burnt my hand in between the garage and the house. It is two keys on a ring and I could not put them down because they were stickier than snot.

Why does the ground get so loud when it is this cold ?
Walking down the sidewalk at night and wondering if I'm going to wake up the neighbors because my boots are putting off about 110 decibels.

No where near that cold here, as it's like 27 degrees, and snowing, but our power went out last night a bit after 8, and Thank God the Wife had finished making dinner right before that (like literally about 10 minutes before it) and of course DTE had no info for us about when it would be back on.... Just a message saying Wind damage caused it and they knew it was out.. It was raining at first, and 41 degrees, and then, out of no where it started Snowing REALLY hard on the way to the bus stop to pick the youngest up, and by the time the bud came we had slush in the roads even though it was so warm before that.

Got woken up at 3 AM, along with everyone else in the house, when the smoke alarms all went nuts. I figured it was the battery back up shutting down. Took a while getting back to sleep. Then it was time to head into town. Wife has to work and I headed to my Mom's house, and her drive way is a sheet of ice, along with the ramp leading up to her house. Looks like I know what I'll be doing in a bit.

Roads weren't terrible, and we saw DTE trucks on the road we're on when we headed in, and only slid twice or so from the sheer amount of Snow, then rain, then back to snow that happened over night. We have some branches down in the yard, and lots of them are down on the streets. Lots of people without power.

Being a Catfish angler, we have multiple battery operated bubblers, so, those got hooked up for the Aquariums to keep the pets going. Made it to town, and at my Mom's house now. Nice having power on LOL. The in law did text me a little bit ago, and said the power had come back on Thank God.

Stay safe everyone.

Splitting hairs.
Antiquated refers not just to the time of creation, but the logic of the scale. ;)

Celsius is based on the change of state of the most vital substance on earth. 0C is the freezing point of water, 100C is the boiling point of water.

Fahrenheit is based on approximate body temperature of one guy(100) and a bowl of ice and salt(0).

Just like the rest of the imperial system, it's clunky and doesn't make much sense.

Just saw the new post as I posted mine.... It's going to be 30 degrees here today, so, if anyone is up for moving, at least we still have normal temps. LOL. Don't get me wrong, it's going to be chilly here too this week, but, you know, your state / province sucks and you should move :)
Depends where in the Mitten, here it's 16 F feels like 8 with the wind chill. Not too cold but prime lake effect temps. Out the window all I see is white. No relief in sight either, forecasting 3+ inches every day for the next week. Skiers are finally happy.

Typical for here, the lake I like to fish has an inch or two of ice, and when the snow is done it'll probably have over a foot on top of the ice. Makes for terrible ice/fishing conditions. I often wonder how nice it would be to get some cold without all the damn snow.

Yup. Flood water on the ice sucks so bad. The worst is when you get a layer of water under a thick blanket of snow. It can lead to some of the most awful conditions for getting stuck.

-41 at 5:30AM. Probably get a few degrees colder before sunrise. Got the Little Buddy heater running in the living room to help the furnace a bit.
Having a couple propane heaters and plenty of propane for ice fishing is handy for peace of mind in these conditions.

Saw an article yesterday saying there is a 130-some hour wait for a tow and 120-some hours for a boost. Damn it feels good to be a gangsta a retired old fart who can stay inside until it warms up. ;)
