I know they say brood x is a primarily east coast thing but I found one in my garden lookin just like bo's pics out here in cali.
They're spreading! ........? I think the difference is just these come out in groups every 10 to 17 years depending upon the broods.
You would notice if it was periodical cicadas. Especially if you have trees ? on your land. You would see mounds/tunnels in your yard . I had them everywhere in the backyard. We have a few huge maple trees.
Once the ground hits a 64degree average. They all come out at once , molt into adults and leave their exoskeletons everywhere. I was showing those cicadas I took pictures ? of to my niece. She was picking them up, that kid loves her some bugs ? , if you let her know they don't bite hehe

Do these things eat cannabis plants?
Not that I'm aware of. At least here. We rarely see them except for the 17 year brood X. From what I read here. They mostly eat while underground on tree root sap. They emerge flock to tree branches to molt , wings form and stabilize then they start their sound mate and die. 4 - 6 weeks then they're gone for 17 years.

They will munch for there first bit of life, netting your plants is about the only defense. But good news is that phase is short lived and they go to the trees to mate and lay eggs. They are super high in nutrients. When they die and fall to the ground you should leave them. Also the holes they emerge from helps water and air penetration in the ground. They are more beneficial then a nuisance. Just depends how we look at it I guess.

I actually am collecting the shells and dead ones to dry and crush up. Going to add them to my recycled soil.

Thought it was circadian but close enough, must be related. I haven’t used an alarm clock (including phone) in a couple of years. Getting older makes you wake up earlier. Soon I’ll be up super early on Tuesday mornings to find bargain deals ?
Haha good call, ya not related at all looked up origin of circa and definitely no correlation...well strike that from the record hah
