Almost burned the house down last night. Time to seriously rethink how I’m running electric. Scary shit. Thankfully I was downstairs and caught it. I think I bumped the cord and it was touching another one and shorted out. Either way amateur hour ends now.

some seeds I chucked this morning 5BAD5FA2-65F3-453D-929E-E94BB0D0F48A.jpeg 39DDB771-AC1A-4C5E-AC37-BE4679018573.jpeg

Heck ya good save mang.
How much power were you pulling through it?
That orange one looks like it's only a 16 gauge ext cord, if so it's only safe to use for a continued 8 amp draw. Or basically 800 watts of power.
And that's only if it's less than 50 ft of cord.
Looks like the plug end may have had some corrosion on it as well, or maybe that's just from the burn though.
Corroded plug ends cause resistance in the connection, and that makes heat and or can cause arcs. A little steel wool will clean up the plug ends if you have that as an issue, and a little die electric grease or "No alox" will prevent it.

oh my god, my ignorant ass had that ma'fucka OVERLOADED. On my way to the store today to get me a 12g cord, and I'm gonna reroute other shit too. Really looking forward to switching to LED and drawing less power that way as well.

Good upgrade. A 12 gauge is good for 20 amps, but only 16 amps continuous draw, a 14 gauge is 15 amps, but only 12 amps continuous draw.
Of course as you've seen you can run them more, but not exactly advised. Lol.
Basically 80% of rated amperage if it's continuous drawn power because of no cool down time and heat build factor.

That looks to be on the neutral side of the circuit. Either it had an alternate path to ground or your overloading the neutral. Past practices we would share one grounded conductor (neutral) with more than one ungrounded conductor (line). Every circuit NOW has to have it's own neutral on new installations. On top of all that BS that "plug" is rated at 15 amps so it technically would melt before the 12 gauge wire in the walls. Loose/poor connections also can create heat say if that plug was really easy to pull apart.

Well I got everything on 12g cords now, and shifted things around so there’s less draw on each line. Should be good for the time being.

Trashplant testers, greazy and denser than it looks. Smell is hard to nail down, but the taste is just classic good weed flavor. Like smoking weed for the first time flavor. Earthy, skunky, dank tasting. Makes sense with what dumpster is theorized to be.

Either the plug was dirty or making bad contact, or the receptacle on the extension cord was. I don't think this was a short, that would trip the breaker.

Any time there is any sort of bad contact it makes resistance go up, where there's resistance there's heat. Glad you caught it before it caused any more problems.

Just route power cables up out of the way so you never touch them.
