Continuing to see-saw back and forth with days above freezing and nights below.
I think I'm going to take my spud to the trout pond in the next village and see how much ice there is. Then I'll probably go back down to the river.

You’ve got a plan
That’s always a good start 👍🏼
Considering I've been up since 3:30 AM, I may also crawl back into bed. ;)

Even if I'm not super hyped about fishing, not going on days like I'm getting right now feels like such a waste. I know if I don't, I'll be thinking about it with regret between now and Spring.

I regret every time I blew it off this year, and a smarter man might've
been able to figure out that something was wrong with me when I'd
get tired and stop early, or just didn't bother to go at all...
when normally I'd be chomping at the bit. to get after 'em.

Not that our situations are similar, in that regard. Do what feels good to ya!! 👊 👊

I need somebody with some experience to chime in.

Do ya think this is walkable yet? ;)

I couldn't believe it. There is a pond in the river valley that I pass when going fishing has been frozen over for a week or two already, but this one is wide open. I didn't really have any trout gear but I tossed the smallest spinner I had a few times to no avail.

So despite having almost the same name, cabelas .com and .ca don't share the same inventory.

Anyway, this year, .ca has brought in an out of date flip-over style shelter that has been available down south for 4 or 5 years and are selling it for 2/3's the price of the current models. I was able to resist that.
Now they are putting it on sale for about 30% off.

I've looked at flip-overs for years, but usually they are too large and too heavy and too expensive for me. Most guys pull them with a quad or skidoo, but I would be dragging it.
This one would slide into my car and the weight will be similar to my current tent/sled combo, with the added bonus of being far more mobile on the ice. With a flipover, as opposed to the hub style tents I have now, the tent flips up while moving to the new spot then flips right down again. Hubs are almost impossible to move without taking them down and setting them up again at the new spot.

Now they are putting it on sale for about 30% off.

In Bloom
This is Chippewa lake fairly close to home, and limits of bluegills, crappie, and occasional perch are easy to
catch for the freezer. 25 is the daily limit for combined bluegills and crappie. Perch are a separate limit of 25 as well.

Nothing to write home about as far as size goes on this lake, but limit catches are fairly easy. I can fillet a 6 inch bluegill just as easily as ones that are 8 to 10".

These resident eagles are in a spot I'd been fishing about a half hour before. There were quite a few open holes in the area that had not froze back up and some locals that live on the lake had been purposely tossing the small ones on the ice for the Eagles. These Eagles make sure nothing goes to waste. They have a nest overlooking the lake.

This pic is from a prior season.

I love all my makita stuff. Has been used and abused for yrs and still going strong.
Imho they have the best battery tech out of all the cordless stuff I've used. Still have batteries going strong after 6 ish yrs of daily usage on them, and a bunch more younger ones. The couple I've ever had fail were in the 8 yr old range, and heavily used day in and out.

The white plywood, @Amarok, it is fastened to the 'bow' ?
( yes, @Ramjet159 , I did Google 'bow' to check my vocabulary, I admit it. Let us call it intellectual pride. I would rather do the homework than suffer the endless grief after I called it the 'fronty part')

Anywho, that forecastle deck🤓, I assume it's purpose is to keep full-length storage available in the bed?

Also, wanted to ask about the screws in the bed. Do you have runners under there ?

I wish I had some skids under my Pelican. Ice is abrasive enough, but it is those dry patches that are going to be the death of it.

I repurposed x-country skis and attached them. I also have water skis used in a similar fashion. This was an early design and the screws aren't countersunk well, but it still pulls really nice.

The deck was part of an experiment last year. I also had one on the stern.(lingo 👊;) ). It made it easier to carry/distribute larger items like the tent and the 20lb propane bottle and the 10" ice auger.

Here are the stern attachment points. One inch hardwood strips sit on the lip of the sled and are screwed from the side. Then the deck was screwed down to the strips.

Here is the deck from underneath.

I'll post a pic of it all loaded up at some point. It's cool how much stuff I can haul.

After the failed river trip this morning I decided to have a look at the trout pond.

Judging by the depth of that crack, there's 2 inches of ice or better.

I gotta do it. I'm having lunch and then driving over to check out a lake. I'd be shocked if there was enough to walk on, but I want to see anyway.

Spud bar, check, rescue picks, check, life jacket, check, common sense, bah it's overrated. ;)
