Just remove that T, along with the R and E, and also the A and second T.
Clear as mud? It's actually pronounced Foc'sle or "Folk Sull".
Don't ask me why. 🤷‍♂️:ROFLMAO: Maybe a real salt like RammerJammer can 'splain it!
Yeah sure I can confuse the breakdown a lot better if you like .
I know a lot of these names for areas or structure on vessels was from way back at the beginning of what could be called modern seamanship . I don’t know how many times I hear names and there’s a story attached as to why it got its name that was relevant to that era but not to todays shipping .
We still have to carry a ships bell onboard the boat which is so archaic but is required by survey .
Now you know shit has gone drastically wrong when your standing outside ringing a bell to alert other vessels of your presence . It will probably mean you’ve lost all power and no longer have an air horn driven by a compressor that is no longer operating .
Truth is unless they’re under sail I doubt with engines running they’ll hear you anyway .
Was is pretty common though is a Fisherman will usually know a few of the correct terms used in seamanship while the Trading Seaman ( commercial shipping ) or Navy seaman will have a far greater vocabulary of correct terminology .
It’s not hard to work out why . Ones much closer related to the old Pirate lifestyle 🤣
I’m sure everything is much clearer now …………

The late arrival of winter is screwing with some critters. I was out for a walk just before dusk yesterday and a white bundle of fuzz crossed the trail ahead of me. As I approached, I could see the varying hare sitting in the bush 3 or 4 paces off the trail. If he was summer coloured he would have been invisible. If there was snow he would have been invisible. A shiny white coat in a brown forest however, is NOT good camouflage. The coyotes and owls and other predators are getting a nice bonus to their detection abilities right now.

Probably too many anyway, they tend to get overpopulated pretty easy. Course I live in town where the predators are all long run out, most anyway. Way too many rabbits around here, wish there was something around that ate them. I like them but it's not worth getting caught taking them in the city limits. No hunting of any kind allowed.

As a MN guy I'm diggin the ice fishing thread here! I seen the secret crappie sauce tip by @belleswell and it caught my attention. I've never heard of this one before, I'll definitely give it a try hopefully soon. The lakes around here in the surrounding twin cities area within 50 or so miles can get hit pretty hard. So the panty fish bite through the ice is usually the go to for action. Sight fishing in the shallows for bass, pike, and sunfish during the day, then hitting crappies in the evening into the night. I've always thought about getting into the eel pout/burbot frenzy up on lake Superior. Seen videos of guys doing phenomenal up by the lift bridge when the fish start their prespawn feed. Lake Gogebic has also looked interesting too, we would always drive by on our way to up to Houghton for some deep powder snowmobileing. Lake mile lacs can be fun times, we target everything other than walleye there because of the slot limitations. Awsome lake for jumbo perch and large predator fish such as pike, musky. There is also a good population of tulipee as well, they are loads of fun to catch through the ice.

The wind roared all night and it barely got below freezing. The 14 day forecast now says more of these temps all the way into December. If ice is being made, it's happening very slowly.

This is definitely making for a shorter winter. We're already only a month from the days getting longer. Heating bill is down year-by-year. Big picture, this is great. For a fisherman, it is a little bit annoying.

May run down to the river and see if the wind broke things up enough to get a cast in.

I don't know how people can stand that kind of population density. At my main spots, it's unusual to see another angler(that's part of why they are my main spots :) ).

There are a few larger lakes between Edmonton and Calgary that look more like a tailgate party outside an NFL stadium on weekends, just bumper to bumper, with dogs and kids and stereos and generators and snow mobiles and every other possible way to destroy solitude.

The cheese heads call us mud ducks, cause we're suposedly dirty birds that fly from lake to lake. Most of us in the building trades live far enough away from the city, but are bound by the frequency of work and wages. 20+ years ago I remember sitting on around 8" of decent early ice and hearing crazy ice cracking and water coming up through the holes. We looked out from our small permanent shack, some idiot was driving a one ton truck pulling a 16' wheel house right up through the middle of a cluster of ice houses. Same spot, from one weekend to the next a guy set a shack within 6' of ours. It can get crazy when the bite is on, but we now just avoid spots like that. The partying is kinda a part of the deal I guess. I remember hearing stories of red light shacks set up out on lake Mille lacs back in the day. It's also not uncommon to see 2 level skid houses over 20' long out there.

My region has a population density of 1/sq km and lots of little lakes that don't have good launches in the summer and are often walk-on(or snowmobile) only in the winter due to heavy snow and unplowed access points. Given that many ice fishermen want to drive on in their big trucks, and those same guys have big boats needing a good launch, that means lots of very under-utilized water for me. It is almost a given on an average ice day that I will see more coyotes than people.

I wish I hadn't spent so much time in the city, but man, it sure makes me appreciate what I have now.

7 miles from home - Monster bluegill lake - Easy bite first ice.
No access shown on any lake map books, which means only a small handful of
locals know about it. My kind of lake. Keeps the googans away. No cottages and around 40 acres.

bluegill lake
Looks nice.
Yeah, peaceful is just as important as productive to me when choosing a destination.

We really only have perch and stocked trout as pan-fish here. I always find it interesting watching vids from down south with crappie and bluegill and sunfish. We don't have anything with that deep and flat shape.

I also get a kick when I see them using 1 and 2 pound test. I don't think I've even seen line that light in the stores. 4 pound is as about as light as you'll find here.

Still not in the deep freeze, but I'm still holding by my last prediction that I'll be on ice this weekend. 🤞

While I was in the shitty getting wheels, I picked up an Okuma Avenger ABF, a reasonably priced spinning reel that has the bait-feed feature and good reviews, in a 1000 size. The Diawa Millionaire will be for targeting big pike, but the Avenger should be ideal on the deadstick for every day walleye/burbot/pike and even perch, as the bait-feeder can be set to almost zero tension.

I'm thinking I'm pretty well set now. From tents to sleds to heaters to electronics to augers, rods, reels, and hand tools, I'm outfitted with quality gear.

I'm hoping to be on the ice Saturday, but if not, it will be within a week barring something extremely strange.

I have one of the old, original Avengers in the 2000 size, and it's still a sweet rig.
You're going to love it, I predict. 👊 👊

Nice to hear a real world review. :)
So yours wouldn't have had the bait-feeder system?
This one has a far greater adjustment range in feeder tension than either of my round baitcasters. I just wish the line-out click was a little louder, but it should be audible in the tent most of the time.
