Let's talk CAFFEINE

Hey hey!
It just kinda occurred to me that we don't have a caffeinated beverages thread around these parts. Seeing as how it's the perfect complement to our favorite plant, I figured I'd start one.

I'm a tea head. Drink loose-leaf every day, gongfu style. For those not in the know, that means a very high leaf to water ratio (I usually use 7g of leaves for an 140mL teapot), boiling water, very short steep times, and repeated steepings. I'm on my 8'th steep of a ripe puerh out of a little pot from Jianshui as I write this.

1000005052-01.jpeg

For most of my life I made and drank Masala Chai, Thai tea, and Earl Grey with milk and sugar as my main caffeine inputs, with the occasional Bai Mu Dan white, but over the last year I've really branched out to roasted oolongs like Dong Ding and Tieguanyin, dark teas like liu bao and puerh, Chinese purple teas, matcha, and all kinds of teas infused with flowers (Snow Chrysanthemum, Osmanthus, Jasmine, and Gardenia) because APPARENTLY I'm an 85 year old grandma. The roasted oolongs have especially been a pleasant surprise and are quickly becoming my favorite things to drink.

I've also started collecting old Yixing teapots and Japanese kyusu. They slightly alter the taste of the tea, reducing bitterness and astringency, and will last forever if they're cared for. They can be over a grand each, but everything I've got has been right around a hundred bucks or less, including one pot from the '70s and one from 1990.

For those that don't know, here's a video on them. Really scratches some of my nerd itches.

I know @Deebs is a fellow tea nerd, are any of y'all? What do you drink? Where do you get it? How do you make it?

Also I know there are some coffee heads on here! I'm a fan as well, but I prefer the tea buzz because there's less anxiety for me. But let's still talk coffee!

If I'm drinking coffee, it's not Starbucks.

To the shock of none of you that have talked to me, I tend to support smaller coffee companies that source their beans mindfully. I tend to go for light to medium roast single origin beans, preferably from Latin America, and prepare them both via French Press and as espresso. Loooove me some cappuccinos when I need to be awake and punchy for the next 12 hours.

But, like, also I fuckin' love me some Cafe Bustelo, which is on the complete other end of the spectrum. That shit and sweetened condensed milk is worth the impending diabetes. Especially made into cold-brew.

YUP. That stuff.

What do you drink? How do you brew it? Where do you source your beans from?

I enjoy a cup of tea, no milk no sugar, just straight. GF has a bunch of different ones in the pantry that I try some of on occasion, and or she makes for me. Don't know what they all are. lol. One of my favirites is a peppermint blend one with black tea she gets. Has a soothing relaxing zing to it, like awakening but not twichy. lol

Agreed. F their crap imho. lol.
Place called the Village Roaster I like to go to, and another one called Hello Coffee that are amazing, and not far from the house here. Daughter loves them too so its a win win other than the pricetag. lmfao

Make a iced cup of it all summer long, kayak has a cupholder that fits my insulated mug perfect.
Love me some Cafe Bust A Loaf is what we call it. lol

I really like Yuban for my daily coffee, relatively lower cost, and tasty imho.
Black, nothing but hot water and the ground up beans, and or tea for me.

Oooh, I could see a peppermint black being really nice!

Yup! Gotta keep the smaller places in business or else Starbucks will take over and raise the prices 10x once everyone else is gone. I've had great stuff from Blue Bottle, Klatch, Ceremony, Qualia, and a bunch of other small roasters via mail order.

Yup! Bustelo is underrated AF. It's not the greatest quality technically, but it's miles better than everything else near its price point. The benefits of using Robusta beans!

Also I think temp is important, I like hot but hot on the coffee maker is maybe not best for brewing? Tastes burnt but maybe that's more the carafe temp? Anyway, insulated mug yeti is my go to.

Beans are from here -

Never been into tea but curious to know what's out there.

For Tea, I like quite a few actually:

Green Tea is alright, but I like White Tea more. But Chai, with Milk and either Honey or Sugar would be my favorite. I also really like Orange Pekoe style with nothing in it.

The more Floral Teas, are another big one for me. Jasmine Tea for example. I do like the addition of Rooibos too, even if it's not actually Tea. Earl Grey is alright too.

Oolong of course... I kind of miss getting that when having Dim Sum in Montreal.

I'm picky with Tea, to the point of "snobby prick" because I know what I don't want haha.

Coffee :

Without a single doubt in my mind, my ALL time favorite is going to be either Ethiopian, or Turkish. There is simply no better way to save the flavor of the Coffee than to NOT use a filter, and instead make the "seeds" into powder. Add hot water, and nothing else.

A French Press would be my ideal way of doing it if you don't have those options. Then it becomes even more convoluted, because then it depends on the time of day. I like Coffee from everywhere. But early in the morning, I'm not going to complain about Robusto Beans, because they have more Caffeine than the Arabica style that tastes a lot better.

I also like Espresso too. With no cream or sugar. If you need those things, it wasn't made right. I don't really like Cappuccino, or, .... I guess you could say I despise iced Coffee too LOL. I like Coffee hot, but NOT from boiling water.

The Water can't be literally boiling, or you're going to grab ALL those Bitter Alkaloids as you make it, and the taste won't be what it could have been.

I could go on and on about Coffee, but now I need to add in another favorite that any Computer Nerd would like:

Jolt Cola. I miss that so much. It's been about 3 years since I've had one. A few stores had it around here, but after buying them out, they never restocked...

That's why I drink a Monster, or Full Throttle, or insert some other energy drink here name a lot more now. But the original Jolt was my drink! Besides, it's not like I look like I eat healthy, so getting B Vitamins is important LOL.

Forgot a side note of humor :

My Caffeine intake over the years has actually dropped from what it used to be, back before I started College, and while I was still in College. I was asked by a Doctor about my Caffeine intake back then, and I said "LD/50" with a straight face LOL. I don't drink multiple pots of Coffee + Jolt anymore, since I can't find the Jolt anymore, but I also only have a cup or so of Coffee if the Energy Drink isn't doing the trick for me.

not gonnea lie on a stressful work day I’ll grab some energy drinks. Hey it works , at least I’m not hitting on some meth or coke to boost my energy ( no diss to who do)

those bangers are over 300mg of caffeine heheh, shoot if they were 99 cents or close I would be all down all the time but luckily they aren’t and they are like 2.50-3 bucks+ each.. wtf lol 😆, it’s all those electrolytes and fancyness

I enjoy a good cup of coffee here and there.

If you're prone to anxiety or have high blood pressure just try not to over due it with the caffeine. 👍

I once went to a check up at the doctors office after taking a caffeine pill and when the nurse went to check my blood pressure her eyes bulged out of her head and she said to me your BP mimics someone who just ran a marathon. I told her about the caffeine pill and she's like yeah that will do it.

I just love dark roast coffee! My wife gets me the Folgers 'Black Silk" and I brew that strong. When i was working, I could easily go through 2-3 twelve cup pots of joe! Now I only have 1 or 2, 20 oz insulated tumblers of coffee daily. A few years ago, I switched to a 6 cup coffee maker to keep my consumption in check. It works well, but if I can't find good coffee, Mountain Dew can get me through.

I love this. I was thinking about something for a few weeks now.... would ya'll wanna start a coffee share? We all have our favorites, and some of us have some awesome local stuff. I would be down to trade favorites with different members if we could find a way to make a system to where we share with different members each month. IDK how it would work, maybe someone else could help out with the details. I figured it'd be a cool way to try different roasts!

No caffeine for me, that stuff really tweaks me something fierce. Started making an effort to drink more water and started getting headaches and just felt like garbage all the time. It was the lack of caffeine, decided I'd just stop it all together. Easier said than done, was worse than quitting nicotine. Finally, did it and now do my best to avoid it. Every so often I'll drink something with caffeine on accident and I'll be up all night, wired to the max, with a headache the next day.

I had to stop my lifelong coffee ritual because of stomach condition. It was hard, still is hard, miss it every morning...sometimes I cave, hard stopping myself from getting back on the train once I start again though, but sure enough it just uppercuts me within no time and it's back to teabags. There are tea's I really enjoy, authentic Chai for example, but they aren't soothing for my tummy.
Got bad migraines without coffee initially so got my caffeine from Yerba Mate to ease off and it fixed me right up, I hate the stuff though. i'll add a spearmint and chamomile bag to it for flavor and to soothe tummy. Bee Pollen with Yerba Mate actually made it feel pretty close to coffee, still not the same fixation though. I prefer to use 2 bags of each Yerba, mint and chamomile honestly, just steep less time, flavor is better and has less of a drying effect on my mouth/throat. Miss coffee so much, might cave today and have a cup :doge:
