Man I miss perch and steelhead fishing and being on the ice! Cleveland born and raised but moved to the deep south in my late 20s. Down here its primarily bass and cats, but we have huge crappie and white bass down here. Great lakes fishing is where it's at though. I loved going down to inside the breakwall in November at night going for smelt, the spring smallmouth in the rivers, man I miss it lol.

I think I’ve owned a couple of those species .
The Pink Snapper do grow considerably larger . That’s pretty well just started to reach spawning age .
Here’s one my wife ( no comment @Hugh Jass @Amarok required ) caught a few years back that’s closing in on fully grown but will still add a few kilo easily IMG_6639.jpeg

Thanks for that. Looks like it was a battle for her. Only ever caught one of those myself but it was a monster out of Lake Michigan.

Really wanting to get on the ice myself but there isn't any. Was getting a little worried about you dude, hadn't seen you post much lately, but then I'd tell myself it's ice fishing season up there.
Thanks for the concern, but I'm all good. :)
I'm out and about, living life and loving it.

Yeah, I'm a huge burbot fan. I love watching them and getting them to hit. I love fighting them, they are super easy to clean, and they taste wonderful.

Those the African Cichlids ? I have a species of Catfish that eat their eggs and release their own eggs into the nests. Cuckoo Catfish from Africa. South American Cichlids are a bit different, and can easily get to the size of the fish in the image. A Jaguar Cichlid is actually dangerous to piss them off when you're cleaning the tank LOL .

You know that is one fish you could totally grow out in your pond. Feeding them is relatively easy give their not so fussy eating style.

Local laws are a bit funny up here, Billy.
I can keep an Emu in my backyard, but not chickens nor trout.

What ?? That's silly... What about Burbot ? They are a Freshwater Cod in terms of family tree, is that legal ?

I guess it's sort of how I think it's silly here:

I can have an AK-47, Moonshine, and almost every fish ever shown on the TV show River Monsters as a pet, except for ONE... It's a $10,000.00 dollar fine if you get caught with a Wels Catfish, or the Eggs of one. They're terrified that Wels will survive here and eat everything in the River, and they get massive (historic records from Germany in the 1500s say they saw 16 footers and had kids in their stomachs) but it's kind of dumb, because I can easily have a Goonch Catfish, which would also survive here, and get large enough to eat Sturgeon, like the Wels do in Italy. And they eat just as many kids as the Wels... Ah well.

No kids meals in our lakes unless it's a massive Musky I guess haha. For fish local to the area, you can keep them as pets, but have to legally purchase them, not catch and keep in a tank.

That is such an awesome looking fish. I bet them suckers can turn sideways and pull like crazy! I appreciate your addition to the species list. Some day I wish to do some salt water angling.
They do look awesome looking when they catch the sun with blue fleuro spots and belly fin tips . The jaws are designed to crush crabs and shellfish but they’ll have a go at most offerings including my finger one day . Tore the end off my Ansell cotton lined glove pretty easily and left a couple nice trenches down the top of the digit . Havent done it again ……….yet !

And another loss a couple months after the Streaky Bay attack . 15 years old , poor kid . Majority are surfers with a few divers taken over the years as well .
The thought horrifies me . It’s a few hours drive from home again .

Hit the dam for the first time in months. Saw a behemoth sitting behind some weeds waiting for easy lunch. I decided to throw my biggest glide bait past her and she instantly started attacking it. Missed it twice at my feet in the 8, finally took a bite and when i set the hook, the leader sliced off on her gill or something. So friggin bummed. I hate hate hate when something like that happens. Lost my favorite glide bait and gave that fish a shitty afternoon. Packing up and heading home.

From what I understand, those gill plates can slice through a lot pretty easy. I've seen a lot of people use normal line for Musky and Pike, but I'd be so worried about the teeth chomping through it. I always thought a metal leader would be a lot better, but with the eye site of the average Musky being better than most fish, it'd probably not work very well.

Ever tried a Bimini set up for them to make it harder to get through ?
