Vintage/Thrift

Anyone else thrift or collect vintage stuff? I love scouring the thrift stores for old stuff that I think is neat. I started collecting all kinds of odds and ends, and figured we could have a place to share this type of stuff.

Here's a vintage Singer sewing machine I got this summer. I have a few of these, but this is the most complete one I've ever found. I think I paid like 30 bucks for it. These machines are tanks and you could sew a boot with one. My girlfriend knows how to use them, I'm still learning

My local thrift is a cast iron honey hole. I have found some gems there, but here's a Griswold good health skillet, that I paid like 3 dollars for. I usually hit them with oven cleaner and then reseason, for use in my kitchen. This one is worth some money, but I put it into rotation. If you see one of these, grab it!

Here's a White zig zag stitch machine I got this summer for 29 bucks. I couldn't pass this one up, before I even knew what it was. It has a cool style to it, with neat little levers and dials. Once I got it home and researched it, I realized it is a good machine to have in the arsenal. Haven't used this one yet, but it can do some cool almost embroidery style stitching along with the zig zags, and seems to function fully. The foot pedal is more of a knee pedal, fixed to the underside of the table.

In Bloom
In an earlier life, I lived in Chicago, got married, some kids, I was welding on locomotives back then in LaGrange Ill.
Wifey, found some work with a curtain maker/reupholster company.
Once kids got to school age, we decided to move back to PA, back to the country, back into these hills.
Wife learns that one of her besties, dad, was a maintenance man for a sewing company.
He had maybe 10 various machines in his basement he refurbished, when the company bought new machines, he would buy them for scrap prices, the fix, and sell them.
I did not KNOW a thing about sergers, and walking feet, other stuff, but she did.
His basement was a horder's dream, 30-50 feet of floor to ceiling STUFF, piled to the ceiling. Way in the back, the machines sat.
2 days later, we get to them. Plug them in, and they work and run, perfectly.
They haggle over the price, and we are the owner of 4 industrial grade sewing machines.
Few weeks later, she/we are in the Curtain & Reupholster business.
Of course my part was/picking up furniture/disassembly of furniture, refinishing the wood, hanging curtains, and fixing the machines after Mr. K passed away.
My kids sold the business, and house after she passed away 10 years ago.

That's an awesome story. It's wild how the plan comes together in ways that we would have never expected. I too have a woman who knows how to sew, and has explained the difference between a serge and a stitch. Thank you for sharing  If by "she" you mean wife, may she rest in peace ?

About 12 years ago we picked up this excellent pair of SP3500's Sansui's 4 way 6 speaker system. Every driver works perfect, crossovers funtion as new.
Fills the house with sound @ 100 watts per channel from our Sony av unit.
They're '71 models.
Holy crap! I grew up listening to a single one of these my dad had out in the garage. I haven't seen one in so long. Those are VERY clean and nice. I didn't realize that speaker was so nice, I always wondered why the garage radio was so loud! Man, I was hoping I would see something like this in this thread, and you just BLEW my mind. Thank you so much for sharing. wow.

That is so freakin' awesome. You are defiantly my type of guy there. you know, the one you feel competitive towards at the estate sale because you see him looking at what you're looking at. That's a fantastic find. I can't imagine how awesome they sound too. I'm not an audiophile, but that unmistakable grate on that speaker gave me goosebumps.

I got this little guy at the local thrift. In original box. After having it for a year, I realized he breaks in half to hold cone incense. Now I take a yearly picture of him smoking whatever we have that year. This year he was blazing some Bahama Berry by Solfire.
