Went up north for a few days.........here is some of the cast iron I've collected........plenty of griswolds in there.
View attachment 165396 There is about another 6-7 griswold pieces in the other room, and probably 10 more pans.......used 1 lb of lye in a dip tank. That little muffin pan is 1800's and it was painted green and excessively.....lye ate that crap right up. If you keep a lid on the tank (which can be a tote) your bath lasts a long time. Every pot/pan goes to bare metal in the bath. I have a laundry sink nearby, it goes from the vat to a fast cold water rinse, which I then dry immediately......then hit with vinegar soaked rag, then dry rag, then crisco...........put the pan in the 450*F pre- heated oven, upside down, put a tray under until you get used to it. Leave it in there for 1 hour. Let it cool. Do that 2 times more and then start cooking with it.
Why Crisco? It's smoke point is 490* F.
Here's the 10 pan doing pig chops, right out of the broiler.
