yesterday, 5-13, i started flowering. i am using the 8 on, 16 off flowering schedule again.

8 days from transplant. 16 days from the last harvest.

the first 3 days of veg were at 400-500 umols of light by using only the outer ring of the light.

then without moving the light i turned on the inner half of the light and got about 900 umols. i ran this power level for 3 days.

the light has been about 4.5' above the canopy during this time.

then 2 days at 1500 umols achieved by lowering the light to about 36" above the canopy.

i added the reflectix "focuser" to the light on day 3 after transplant.

i am getting slightly stronger readings at any given distance after adding the focus ring thingy.

the panda film was added on day 3 also.

it slows evaporation and reflects upward.

it is also causing roots to come up out of the surface and dive back in.

the black tubes you can barely see in the overall shot are 1.5" pipe insulation foam.

i am sealing the gap between the upper and lower pools with it.
I love it! This system is truly versatile. Gotta get busy!

hey buddy! as i've stated before, the PPK idea is a flow pattern.

there are no highly specific builds that you must adhere to in order to make it work.

this stupid swimming pool is a fully recirculating closed-loop hydroponic system.

it can be as large or as small as you like.

someday i want to set up an entire facility with a false floor over a full room shallow pool. holes drilled in the floor to receive plants.

also, for the journal record this is d9's pheno of ethos orange kush cake.

como estas, ya'all!

today is one week of flower so i thought i'd put up a few shots to show progress.

first two are last week and this morning. approx same distance and angle.

i have some interesting observations to report.

i started flowering these plants at 1500 umols of light flow and have not raised the light yet.

the tops in the dead center are pegging my meter right now. no reading which means that i have exceeded 2000 umols of flow.

the edges are running around 1900-1950.

2000 umols for 8 hours is 57.6 moles of total light.

the research has shown that after 2000 umols photosynthesis starts shutting down but as i've stated before these figures were achieved in a lab using an integrating sphere on single leaves.

here in real life i'm not seeing this yet.

maybe a whole living plant can process that level of light for a short period of time.

maybe if the cumulative total of light is received in a shorter time frame it won't damage the plant but the energy can still be used for growth.

i can't find anything in the literature referring to this subject.

these plants are growing like they are being pulled upward by a strong rubber band.

when i started flowering these only one week ago they were all about 8" tall. now they are about 24-25".

so they have put on a minimum of 16" in slightly less than a week.

3 days ago the tops were an almost fluorescent green so i bumped the feed up to full strength which is 3.6, 1.2, and 2.4 from the 3-2-1 moderate dose.

they seem to be digging it.

i have not installed the net yet as i don't have a clue as to how much more stretch i'm going to get.

that's all folks!

today marks 2 weeks of flowering. mid-week i stripped them pretty hard to slow down stretch. it worked to some extent but they are still going upward at several inches a day.

i have just run a full 30 gal load of full strength jack's 3.6-2.4-1.2 through the system and they are showing a darker, more normal, green as opposed to the almost fluorescent green i was getting at the moderate 3-2-1 dose. i will repeat it reloading today.

i installed the net on the horizontal bar which is 42" above the floor. this was my normal net height when scrogging single large plants.

i started this as a sog but it will end as a scrog. i can't let them get much closer to the light. i'm already near my maximum height adjustment point and the tops are in the 2000 umol range.

i have been allowing the plants to grow into the 2000 umol range before moving the light. the tops are in that range in these photos but i'm not seeing any negative effects.

in fact, they look like they are really digging it!

i thought i would show a flower shot at 14 days.

this light is definitely not UL rated. there are 2 little electrodes in the center of each one that will shock the hell out of you if you touch them simultaneously.

if anyone is wondering why i'm so "hung up" about these bulbs (i couldn't help it), i got about 3000 of them in a trade with my former employers.

they already had the diffusers removed.

so i'm gonna burn 'em!

Looking good D9! Damn I gotta quit getting sidetracked and finish my build so I can play along.

yesterday was 3 weeks of flower. just a little pictorial update for the journal.

mid-week i started tying the taller ones down and i need another session right now.

and a little more thinning for light.

today is 6 weeks of flower.

my wife's mother passed away two weeks ago Sunday so i haven't been able to update until now.

she was one of those beautiful people who loved everyone. she lit up a room when she walked in. in 27 years i never heard her say an unkind word.

she was 78 and was being treated for pancreatic cancer. she had an aneurism and passed suddenly and unexpectedly. she will be missed!

i just ran the 4-2-.5 jack's bloom booster formula for 2 weeks. i pumped out the system before and after using it. i reloaded with 2.7-1.8-.9 jacks.

here's a few pics to show progress.

thank you for the kind words!

today we are at 8 weeks. i just took a couple of flower shots to get an idea of trich color and ripeness.

about 50/50 clear/opaque and a smattering of amber.

i think another week is called for.

i have not deviated from the 8 on,16 off cycle.

at 7.5 weeks i dumped the res and refilled with ph adjusted water. the recirculating part is reading 300 ppm at 6.4 today.

well, here we are at week 9 + 2 days and they are still not quite done.

at week 7.5 i began running ph'd water.

at week 8.5 i cut the light to half power.

at week 9 i turned off the top watering so they are sucking up the water from the pool and it is not being replenished.

trichs are 60/40 opaque/clear and a few more amber today.

stinks real good and looks dank as hell.

but, i won't grow it again as the yield is mediocre.

in fact, i'm not real happy with my ethos genetics experience. they all had decent potency but none had a great high.

also, all except this one pheno of "orange kush cake" were bland. just blah with little flavor.

here are a few flower shots taken yesterday.

10 weeks on Saturday and i took them down. i'm out of patience.

not much change between weeks 9-10. a little more amber perhaps.

finished chopping saturday and pulled the root balls sunday.

did not dump the medium. instead i turned it over, removing any stray roots.

then added 6 more lbs worm castings and some more vermiculite with diatomaceous earth.

mixed it all in with gloved hands and then transplanted 44 cuts into the pool.

i added the extra worm poo and verm/de to freshen up the bacteria a little but also to make the medium retain a little more moisture.

so, i'm out of the ethos genetics business. i have a 5 pack each of "thug rose" and "crescendo" reg seeds that i will never run so if anyone wants them let me know.

in the pool now we have "rare lemonhead #10", a clone only cut from a friend in michigan. this is not lemonhead og from royal choice farms.

tomorrow will be the first dark 16 hr dark period so the turnaround time is 2 days this time.

In Bloom
during my 5 years in Oregon i produced large plants for extraction.

i went through probably 65-75 strains in that time.

i learned that trichome coverage does not automatically equate to higher potency.

and so it is with these 3 ethos genetics strains i just searched through.

all were absolutely covered in trichs and looked fantastic but were mostly quite bland.

and potency was just ok.

i want to talk a little bit about the mistakes i made growing this last plant, the orange kush cake.

it was a stretcher and i should have topped them. it would have controlled height but also would have forced the laterals closer to the net and achieved a more even canopy.

i should have cleaned up the lower growth a little better.

i got a 3-d canopy in that i harvested as much flower under the net as above. but because of the immensely powerful light i had almost no larf.

but i would have yielded more had the canopy been more level.

it was also a mistake to veg them a week before the flip. it just accelerated the stretch. again i think the light supercharged stretch as i ran it 16 hours a day until the flip

in my current grow i topped them a week prior to flowering and cleaned up the bottoms fairly radically at the onset.

we'll see!

today marks the end of week one.

just a few pics for history.

i flowered these upon transplant at about 12". today some shoots are 22" above the medium. 10" in one week.

i used just the outer ring of 60 bulbs for the first 3 days after transplant. this measured at about 400 umols of flow.

at the fourth day, i turned on the inner 60 bulbs and this brought light flow up to about 750-800 umols.

today i dropped the light down to acheive about 1350 umols in the center.

still using the 8 on 16 off flowering schedule.

i know you do not top in a classic sog but the last grow was my first sog in 20 years so i'm feeling my way along.

i topped all these at about 12" and i have achieved a better canopy.

a lot of shoots up top.

for the record, the last grow with the "orange kush cake" is dry and trimmed. it came out right at 2 lb which surprised the shit out of me because it just didn't look like that much.

i think the light is responsible for this. almost no larf. 1680 watts over 13.65 sq ft

this is what i've been talking about regarding the led light industry. i think most are barely adequate as far as power level is concerned.
