Well this plant late stage seedling I guess was about 11-12 inches tall before I topped it... Watered it this morning when I noticed this it pretty much just pulled right apart... IMG_20240225_090459635_HDR.jpg I got this rhubarb in the same tray as her and seems to have it also but not really turning brown yet IMG_20240225_090620377_HDR.jpg IMG_20240225_091129193_HDR.jpg IMG_20240225_091631470_HDR.jpg im guessing this stuff spreads I have 4 other seedling in different trays right next to these.. is damping off common this late in seedling? The only thing I've changed is my coco brand idk it low humidity in the pellet stove room been dealing with fungus gnats forever and got some springtails...

I've had that happen on small & med and one large sized plants. Too wet around the stalk of the plant, slowly rots away the bark/skin and the plant keels off.
I attributed mine to the rapid rooters around the base holding too much moisture.
Are those from seed I assume?

I wouldn’t consider that “damping off” as much as stem rot. Fungal infection at the soil level is usually to blame and a lot of time root rot is occurring at the same time. Looks like coco is pretty water logged?

For sure it can spread and I would be honestly growing them somewhere less dry as arrid conditions actually are what help the spores of this type of fungal diseases take of wings and release. Cold and dry are the worst typically for root/ stem rot.

Not sure on remedy…. If it were me I’d clone and start over on effected plants and use H2o2 spray on clean plants, soil, pots saucers et.

Yeah there definitely wet I had just watered them but that one was fairly well rooted down along the bottom of the pot.. I usually start everything upstairs from seed then move downstairs where everything else happens once they grow up a little shoulda already moved em down there for sure..I've lost a few seedlings in my time but never ones this big.. good information I agree definitely something fungal

I'm wondering if topping had something to do with it. Like it slowed transpiration?
I bet any stress takes energy from pathogen resistance for sure.

genetics I’m sure play a huge role in the plants ability to fight off disease. The pics look like those varieties have kinda a soft stem, structure. Maybe velvety to the touch. Like a lot of in and out whereas a woody stem could help keep out disease. I wonder if when people say mold resistant If woody vs soft stem structure plays any role from a young age of the plant. Idk?
