Love your selection of plants.
Thank you. I hope they work out but I'm having a lot of fun either way. :)
Sounds like you're coming along but also still some work ahead. Seems like you're having a really good time with the process too, love that for you.
Yup, lots of work still to do, but since it's working for me, it's mostly pleasure as you've noted.
Thank you for visiting and for your feedback and kind words. :)

----------------------------

I was just reading on the U of Sask's page and found some things that inspired an upcoming experiment.
First, haskap thrive under powerful light with strong UV. Second, while still theoretical, tomato nutrients should work well for haskap.

Therefore I want to see how one(edit: two, not one. need a breeding pair) does in a grow tent.

As most of us know, tomato nutes were often recommenced as a substitute for cannabis nutes as they have similar needs. How would a haskap take to being fed Jack's 3-2-1?

If it works, I wonder what kind of flower cycle turnaround one could achieve. As in, after flowering, how long to go back to veg and then reflower. Or could they be kept in perpetual flower? That doesn't seem right, but I want to see for myself.

Seems as though you've happened on a "super food," for your garden. Bonus!
Plus, they have meaningful fruit in year 2!
I got all excited for a sec, but then saw I'm about 4-4.5 zones too warm for these little guys.
Have to stick with my blueberries, although they really belong to the squirrels.
Know a farmers market vendor that lives in zone 4, they went for mid and early blooming varieties because of their shorter season.

check out these two varieties compared under different climates ( sunshine hours+rainfall i'm sure influence it too), variety or weather dependent i'm not sure but seems like these work in different climates, same latitudes different climates. I feel if you are in a hotter climate, something early that harvests pre july heat waves would work well

Worth planting one in some fungal dominant soil to see how it does by next season. I could probably send you some cuttings to try and root first...before long we'll all be trading haskaps?
unless you're below this grey line then I think they turn to raisins on a branch :p

So many tempting varieties

I was going to call my autobiography, "Regressing to the Mean," but
now I think I'm going to call it, "Below the Gray Line."

Guess I'll have to stick with our Scuppernongs (which sound a tad Aussie... WTF is a Scuppernong, mate?)

HaskapHunter.org :ROFLMAO:

I'm up to 11 now, with 7 different varieties.
Unless I buy the vacant lot next door, I'm running out of space. I'm still trying to figure out where the Saskatoon and the Gojis are going to fit.

I never guessed fruit bushes could be addicting.

BTDubs, look what showed up yesterday... now I have to use my brain... dammit.

I really hope you enjoy it. I was probably in my teens the first time and have read it 3 or 4 more times.

I'm curious to see how the Space Navy compares to the one you experienced, what you think of their system of government(compared to us and to the Enemy), plus the story is a good one. :)

Anyone read
Not I.

---------------

After reading a bunch more on the Uof S site, it seems that for early varieties, the best pairing for size, growth rates, and production is Honey Bee and Aurora. Honey Bee is the fastest growing cultivar they've released and has great fruit. I'm so happy I got some.

The Russian Berry Blue is also a universal pollinator that should produce some fun offspring.

send you some cuttings to try and root first
Have you had success rooting cuts?
I've got one in perlite and it seems pretty happy after a couple days.
(not like I need more plants, I just can't help trying to learn stuff)

Off to get some sand. :)

So I've been toying with the idea of putting in a second liner. I wanted a bit more peace of mind, and a second reinforced, UV resistant liner would still make for a total of less than a third the cost of EPDM.

Today I set the liner in place (tip: start from the deepest end) and realized the few extra inches I dug out of the deepest spot meant the extra liner around the edge was reduced to where I would still be able to fill the pond, but the margin for error was reduced past where I was comfortable.

After a bit of thinking, I had a plan. I'll add a layer of sand on the original liner both as a softener/protection and to gain back that extra depth, then lay the second liner on top.

I ran to the nearest small city(a bit closer than YEG) and picked up the second liner and on the way back grabbed another load of sand. As I loaded the buckets, I could see the lightning and hear the thunder and the sky was black. By the time I drove 10 minutes home I was in the middle of a huge storm.

Of course now the first layer of sand is wet and the deep part of the hole is full of dirty water.

Not a huge deal. It's supposed to be warm and dry after tonight. I'll bail/pump out the water tomorrow and carry on.

anyone read Xenocide, Speaker for the Dead or Children of the Mind? The whole phylotic web of tree's and aliens that sacrafice themselves to turn into father tree's...

I have taken cuttings but haven't verified yet, but know that's the only way of propagating for example Strawberry Sensation, I don't understand why cause I forget a lot of things, but i guess if you take the time to grow out the seeds and find out after a few years they likely taste not so great it's disapointing for all the space they take, 3-5 feet each. I've started planting curly scotch kale between them, that stuff is super sweet. I'm sure it's possible to make seeds pretty homogenous from haskap but have no idea because it's so much different from cannabis when it comes to breeding and fertility. With that said, I did take cuttings last season and put foop gel on them and stuck them in the dirt outside, i believe it's time to go check and see how that worked now that i remember I did that. I do know the ones I took cuts from have buds so they survived even though they look dead from far, they have lots of buds

I have taken cuttings but haven't verified yet,
I read that cuts from new growth can root in 4-6 weeks, so I'm treating this one like a cannabis cut and seeing what happens. I'll try with some other varieties if this one roots.

anyone read Xenocide, Speaker for the Dead or Children of the Mind?
I searched Speaker for the Dead, and saw it is part of the Ender's Game series. I have heard of it but if I read it, it was so long ago that I don't recall.

I keep telling myself to get back to reading novels. I got rid of 95% of my paper books years ago and have a shitload of e-books, but I rarely read them.

I'm sweating the load after promising to read ST.
I haven't even tried to read a book in a couple of years.
Last book I read was Michael Pollan's How To Change Your Mind,
when I was experimenting with growing some shrooms.

I fear the interwebz may have monkeyed around with my attention span....
But I'm gonna give it a bash.

I'm beat.

Bailed out the hole, shoveled and hauled multiple loads of sand, placed a bunch of sand, did more prep work on the pond edges, trimmed a hedge, moved a bunch of rocks, and some other stuff too, I think. o_O
Not sure how many pounds(1000+?) I hauled today, but I'm sure my back will let me know tomorrow.

I'm in for supper and currently deciding if I have enough energy to place the second liner tonight. I've begun opening it up and spreading it out but that may be the end.

Oh, took a few photos as well. I have to see if I have a pic somewhere of the vegetable garden from last year as a "before". Should have an okay timeline post at some point, if it holds water.

I do know that a lot of the plants from northern regions need that cold winter dormancy to survive. In Bonsai I know that trees that are supposed to have a dormancy period need to have that to keep them as bonsai. If you try growing a Maple bonsai and bring it inside for the winters it won't survive for very many years. But it would be interesting to see what happens with that experiment.

I'm beat.
Okay, NOW I'm beat.

Got the liner in, placed, and almost all the horizontal surfaces have been covered with a layer of sand. The walls on the lowest section are done. I am out of sand so it's a good time to stop.
Sharon Osbourne GIF by The Masked Singer

Tomorrow I'll get more sand and work on the vertical surfaces and if I don't run out of rock it will be fill time.

Now if the Panthers can beat the Laffs in OT and the Oilers can win, it will be a damn fine evening.

I feel guilty taking cuttings from the honeyberries now that I see so many undamaged buds there are, but I'm going to take new cuttings and do it right since you mention 4-6 weeks... lets hope 4 weeks or less!
The official audiobooks are nice to have when i'm watering things or driving.
