Then just go buy a 14g, 12g or 10g power cord tail with appropriate NEMA cord or plug end (M or F) and replace it...problem solved no need to watch or worry....

IE.... StackPath
I'm thinking if the plug wiring is bad then the internal wiring could be crappy too. Stopped at the store yesterday and saw a cheapo for $50 and a DeLonghi for $90 beside it... same wattages. The D had a 3 year warranty while cheapo had just one.

Delonghi is the brand of the one that I've got, does 600, 900, or 1200 watt settings with a digital thermostat built into it. I did a black gorilla tape flapper with a magnet on it to cover the light from the temp control display. Have used it pretty extensively over the last 3 or 4 yrs I've had it. Used it for the grow at first, then it became the jobsite/garage heater since then. No issues with it at all so far, works great imho.
I was probably wrong asking to move this to the "OG" section (peeps call me "OG" all the time so maybe that's why I chose it ?). It should really be in the Grow Journal section methinks.
Already ahead of you on that one, as that was my same thoughts on it. lol

Just regularly monitor any heating units you use. This includes the power cable/plug, making sure it doesn't get too hot or starts discoloring, smelling, etc. The main concern with these units is the plug IMO. Sometimes they cheap out on those plugs.
Thats a habit I've been in since I was a kid, well worth the bit of time it takes to inspect things, especially with high draw electrics.

DAY #1
So I'm dropping seeds in Root Riots today in nine hours. I have the new beans in hand but the others (we'll discuss those in a bit) are "at the spot". I coulda went ahead and started soaking these last night but that wouldn't be fair to the others, so I'm gonna wait til they're all together before the dunk. They'll soak from noon to six and then into the Riots (tails or not, as long as the shells are softened I'm happy).

WATER
Which one? I got spring water, distilled, purified with minerals added, RO, and tap of course ?.

ADD THIS OR THAT?
I've seen/heard: a drop of Superthrive, half an aspirin, some Rhizotonic (It used to be a good thang when I last grew indoors). Y'all do any of these things nowadays?

HEAT MAT
Okay to use one "without" the thermostat (another $40)?

POTS
I'm for sure going to run organic, but don't know what I got yet. So my plan was to finish the hunt(s) in Active Aqua 9x9 square pots (black or white?)... let's me pull individual plants for examination/tending/culling before ultimately using a living soil bed (grassrootsfabricpots are local and I'm "good buds" with them).

Let's talk about "playmates" in my next post after I make a quick run. To keep ya's interested until I return (I hope), I'm selecting from: Peakseedsbc's Northern Lights, Northern Lights x Haze, Skunk x C99, Northern Lights x C99; Fleur du Mal's C99 and General's Daughter;
JoeyWeed's AK47 f2's (from early Serious stock); Richard William's Back to the Congo; "old" Brother's Grimm C99 x Durban Poison; Satiros Seeds Super Silver Haze x AK47; Alternative Seeds Mikado bx.

There are more but these are the ones I've been itching to put down ?. I'll be back before too long... gotta make a dump run.

If you use a heat mat, then you need the thermostat/controller. otherwise the mat will just keep heating to the max, well above the 75-80° you want to shoot for. I’ve made this mistake before, it is certain death for your seeds.

Germinating on something like a CPU case is a good option if you dont want to buy a heat mat & controller.

I used distilled with h2o2. I soaked my peat pods in distilled with h2o2 and superthrive (1/4 tsp to 1gal) this time around and had good luck. I don't have a ph meter either ?
I even went as far as to pasteurized my pods and coco this round but I've had pest issues.
Good luck

Just searched and found this: "It is important to keep mind that water (distilled, deionized, or tap) is NOT “pure” (i.e., pH equal to 7). The moment it comes in contact with air, CO2 gas begins dissolving into it, forming carbonic acid. The actual pH, therefore, will typically be slightly less than 7."

I think I'll just let the distilled sit out for an hour or so, eh? I don't have the meter in hand and on a schedule ?.

RATIO IS 5:1 WATER TO H2O2
This dang internet is something else... found this:
"I constantly see the ratio of 5 parts water to 1 part 3% H2O2. I use a cup of water which is 237ml, then add a fifth of that which is 47.4ml of the 3% hydrogen peroxide. I read Ed Rosethal’s Seed Propagation page…he says same thing, 5:1 water to H2O2…then he says if you use 0.5% hydrogen peroxide (which is a sixth of the strength of the 3% if my math is still correct) he says you have to dilute it 200 parts water to one part 0.5% H2O2. That just doesn’t make sense Ed…must’ve been a typo…? I’d just stick with the pharmacy bought stuff at 3% hydrogen peroxide, and take how ever many ml of water you plan on using, divide that by five and that’ll be the amount of H2O2 you should put in the solution. I heard to not leave it in that solution for more than 24 hours or it might drown. Some folks beg to differ, but just don’t leave it in for too long."

Unbelievably I can not get my hands on a heat mat thermostat right now! And I'm gonna try one more spot for the 3% H2O2. Only thing I was able to grab was the oil filled heater for now... ☹️
Try using an aquarium heater. I put the heater in a 10 gallon tote with 4-5 inches of water, set the temp at 80F. Next place an identical tote in the first one, now just follow your preferred germination method. This works fantastically and the temps stay within 1 degree.
This setup used to be my mushroom fruiting chamber. It has become the go to germinator, so now I'll have to make another before I run any more shrooms. Good luck mang.

If ya's got an opinion on the water question I'm thanking in advance... I'ma default to "straight distilled" otherwise.
Myself I just use it from the tap here. I'd like to do RO, but the water wastage with it is what stops me. Don't wanna be a waster. Lol
My water quality here is pretty hard, but good and mineral rich. The pH sure can go up and down alot though, took me a good while to adapt to that. ?‍♂️?‍♂️?‍♂️
Typically 9.1 outta the tap, and high 8's after it's sat a day or so. Particularly high in calcium carbonate, around 175 ish ppm after it's sat to let the chlorine off gas.
I've found over my time growing with this water, giving it to em straight with my ROLS, that the soil will accept it and stay in its happy spot as far as the soils pH. Soils ph has been set by its makeup, and what's all in it. I did have to adapt my soil mixes to have it work that way though.
In the beginning yrs the cal carb buildup from the water would slowly creep up the soils pH.
To fix this I began adding more sulfur based amendments, and some sulfur itself in the reammending.
It was all a learning curve, still learning new stuff every day. Lol

Ahhh yes, the "double boiler method" ?, actually ingenious as it is THE METHOD to keep from scorching things (kinda important with beans eh?). I was in the reptile section of a pet store try'na find a t-stat and they had those heaters! Well the bottom line is I held off putting the seeds in the Riots until I can get the t-stat this morning. I really like that idea though...
