Sticky traps....

1 teaspoon of BT per gallon of your feed water breaks the cycle and ends the problem. Takes about 7-10 days. It seems every brand of bag soil comes with gnats pre-installed :) The BT treatment is 100% effective.
BT? Ive never had to treat for anything..Im clueless. But...I had a feeling using smaller pots was gonna bring them out. Which is Ok...I wanna learn while on the hunt!

Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis,
That's not what I'm talking about. This is what you want.......Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki
It wipes out the larvae stage.

Great advice already here, don’t stress too much. My diy sticky traps came in today. 9$ for a can of tanglefoot. (usually home depot or amazon)Then a stack of yellow or blue index cards and you have a good 6 month supply or so. I picked up small yellow glossy party plates instead of cards last time and they work great too. D80BED3B-C8AB-419A-9A78-FE8DEA823DE8.jpeg

That is the first line of defense for keeping ants out of my hummingbird feeders........they will not cross a strip of that stuff.
It is pretty hard to get off also ;)

BTI only is effective for larvae stage of Mosquitoes and fungus gnats ( I mentioned best version is 8% of BTI and I use it all the time as ipm )so when u see adults that who,e stage u can’t fight and like many pest, you will find out they populate super fast.

also that spray mentioned, show me any info that ” dr earth” is a killer or effective for fungus gnats? can’t find that as a suggested Ipm for fungus gnats on any of their products. can’t say ur not right but even labeled as FG. U gotta apply to the first 1/4-1/2 inch and that’s quite a bit vs other methods

more general info, I woild agree with a lot but some i[m for fungus gnats just wouldn’t be worth it at least for me , just hassle?

if you use de or these sprays, the “con” is every time u water it must be reapplied and ur not eliminating ur issue anymore than if u let medium dry to border of being too dry for a few days. I remember when I tried sand and than gnatnix. not only was it more costly but I never beat them and it also was more time consuming.

point is I saw many people use de but do you really want to spread every few days a carcinogen dust?

another defense is having a constant fan on ur medium, not only are you helping ur Co2/air to medium and everything living in there but ur not allowing the adults to be able to lay their eggs

point is fungus gnats compared to mites is if ur bringing in new mediums or even just season. It’s just something like many pest if ur ina. Region with FG or enviroment they want. They kinda fuck ya vs indoors u can def avoid normal mites if being clean and having good protocol

@BH...Is BT what you were talking about using? I know you said BTI..
Bt is used for moths, caterpillars and misc similar species. diff bacteria but bti works on Mosquito and fungus gnats larvae

I use the BTI 8% season around and than apply other defenses if I see infection.

pro to liquid 8% = 2x shelf life over mosquito bits and cost per application is way better

i used to buy 5 gal containers of the m bits and misc brands but the liquid version is such a better deal.

liquid BTI isits 1/2ml-1ml per gall (t says every 14 days, I do it every rez or every other to be more preventive )

now notice the price for a gallon, almost a buck per gallon! this is why I buy it gal version and have enough for multi season. Key is to keep it cool and dark area.

@BH that is the same for soil?
Liquid BTI = defense for larvae aka baby stage of FG in medium. it goes in cycles that’s why the prob;em won’t ever stop till u reduce and kill the issue…

if infected and BTI can’t keep larvave stage down = nematodes for larvae

adult stage defense = rove beetles and or h mile predator mites + yellow traps to catch some and also know ur pest pressure

Alright, I gotta be honest. A lot of pictures have sticky traps in them. Kinda spooks me. Are these mostly for soil gnats? Im hypothesizing after being here for awhile and doing a small pot hunt myself, It's because we use small pots that need watered a lot which keeps the surface wet more than normal? Knock on wood Ive never had any pests...I also don't let people, pets or clones in my room. But Ive heard the FFHF I'm using has had a problem lately with gnats.
had a big issue with them - cleaned room, ect but once I got one of those pull fly strips - got ridof those dam nats - I just hung it on one wall and the strip got them all dam things

Another little tip for the sticky traps i wouldn't overlook is to look very closely at the traps and if you can lay one directly on the soil, you may or may not get a surprise I found springtails and predatory mites once I looked really close. The springtails looked almost like coco dust but was definitely bugs, macro lens or loupe is a huge help with identifying the little critters

Regarding stickies
Yellow work best for gnats...Blue work best for thrips (But they go on yellow traps).

A great trap for both of them is a solo cup with 5 drops of dish soap, a few drops of vanilla and a shot of red wine vinegar and a shot of water. They are really attracted to the fermentation smell of the red wine vinegar. I have made them with tin foil lids with a cone shape and a hole and without and they go in either way.

I use all of my traps to detect if we have a gnat or thrip situation. I grow in organic soil and live in thrip mecca. They come in from outside all summer (this is the time of year i can truly eradicate them until may).

Thrips are like a kicked up gnat.
