UrbanHillbilly grow, fingers crossed.

I say fingers crossed because this is only my second grow ever and my first one was largely a disaster, thanks to yours truly. Left in veg for months longer than expected due to outside factors, and completely blanked on a male that was in the tent. Yeah we still got a small harvest and we're enjoying still, but the buds were seed bombs. Ah well, hopefully at least learned a lesson or two along the way.

This time around I'm growing a couple of Ogre Kush x Banana OG F3 crosses and a Candyfloss auto. I had a couple other sprouts of the OK x B F3 seeds, but they didn't thrive. Older seeds and I think they weren't really mature enough. At the least, the Candyfloss should hopefully make a good run of it and if my luck turns south, I'll toss another auto seed in there. The Candyfloss (the genetics from Copenhagen Seed Company) advertises 70-75 days from seed to harvest and I gotta say, I'm impressed so far.

The Candyfloss is on the left and today is exactly one month since I put the seed in water. Little bugger is really taking off and making me proud. I have these in a little 2x2 tent (the others will be moved soon to a 3x3 tent) and I don't have a carbon filter, so the aroma is getting around the house pretty noticeably in recent days. I picked the Candyfloss in part because the tent is only 4' high and this auto is crossed with LowRyder so it should fit even at full maturity. IIRC listing said it's typically 100-120 cm tall, with up to 28% THC. Seems high for an auto and I'm not holding my breath, but I'll take what it give me. I don't plan on testing it anyway.

I posted a few days ago about the tri-color variegation on a leaf, that's on the smaller plant, front right. It's about time to transplant that one within a few days.

Good luck!! I've screwed up more times than I can remember so don't be too hard on yourself. Looks like you're off to a great start!

I moved the two photoperiod plants into their own tent a few days ago. Now things are coming along nicely with the auto in the first tent, but not quite as well with the two photos in the second tent.

First of all, here is the growth (and buds) on the Candyfloss auto. Keep in mind this tent is only 4' tall so I will likely have to do some bending soon and perhaps even swap tents. 20231214_122058.jpg

Right now I have the fan above the light in that tent, so I'll be moving it outside to allow move headspace for this girl. She's a fast grower, only 70-75 days from seed to harvest. Right now she's on day 37 since I put that bean in water (and a Jiffy pod the next day).

Here are the photos I'm concerned about, the Ogre Kush x Banana OF F3 cross. They're both staying stubbornly short. And more troubling, the plant on the left has a problem on a leaf as shown in the pics.

I've been posting the last few updates in another thread where I was delving into a problem with one plant, but it's time to update here. What's a grow journal for, after all?

The plants are coming along pretty well. The one problem leaf didn't spread and it was pretty well overshadowed now, so I went around and cropped it along with a few other lower leaves. The two photo plants (still crossing my fingers that at least one is a girl!) are staying short and stout, but seemingly healthy. Right now I'm thinking I'll flip them to flower before the end of the month.

The Candyfloss has really taken off. Going by the 10 week estimate seed-to-harvest, it should be ready in roughly 1 month from now. The buds are coming along nicely.

My better half hadn't looked in on the grow for a couple of weeks, so when I showed her the pic of the branch with buds her eyes got big and she ran upstairs to get a better look. I measured her at 29" from the floor. Since that tent is only 4' tall I moved the fan outside the tent (it was above the light) and raised the light nearly as far as I can, even bypassing the height adjustment pulleys and hung it directly from the top rail of the tent. I also bent the tallest branch off to the left, you can probably make out the twine in the pic. The jury is still out on whether I'll have to swap it out to the bigger tent, but that's a distinct possibility.

I hear a lot of people knock autos and it sucks that you can't take clones, but I'm enjoying this grow and now I'm eyeballing another 10 week auto from the same source called Ragnar's Hammer. I expect that I'll order some of those beans, perhaps sooner than later.

The photos are staying short and stout, measuring 19" from the floor. I was anticipating more height, but ATM I'm thinking I'll flip them to flower before the end of December and see if at least one of them is a girl. Both tents are looking happy right now, IMHO.

I also tweaked the lights with the PPFD app on my phone. The Candyfloss is well into flower so I put it at adjusted it to about 900 at the top of the plant, and with the two photos in veg I dialed it down a little to about 540, with the light a full 2' above the plants.

Looking for advice. I swapped tents, putting the two shorter photoperiods into the 2x2x4 tent to give the auto more room to gain more height during her last few weeks. The photos are a little bushy and a bit crowded in the 2x2. The auto is just over 3' tall and I'm concerned about her stretching between how in harvest, predicted around the 3rd week of January so I moved her to the 3x3x6 tent. She was getting pretty close to the light in the shorter tent. I could try to rig something up so the light is more flush with the top of the tent I suppose, if I need to switch her back to give the two photos more room.

I was hoping to flip the photos to flower about now, but I know they'll stretch when I do so and I'm not sure they'll have room in the little tent. Think they'll be OK in that little tent for a few weeks? Or should I swap them back to their original tents to give the photos more space? It sucks being constrained this much for space.
Here's where we stand right now.

I just need a few weeks. I'll chop the auto before the end of January and dry it in the smaller tent. I have no idea whether either or both of the photos are female until I flip them, but I'm wary of doing that until I figure out my space issue.

The Candyfloss auto.

I would say the Auto is probably about done with the stretch. Buds should fatten up from here out. I have run a few autos now, have one going now that's getting close to 40 days, stretch is slowing I believe. My 2x2 is 66 inches, I have the fans and filter outside the tent, exhaust fan sucks air out and pushes it through the filter, have another intake fan blowing air in to keep the air flowing good without sucking in the walls. I can have the lights almost 5 feet off the floor, plenty of room for most autos I've ran, shouldn't hurt to lean them over either if you must. Definitely don't want your light too close to the tent ceiling.

I would also say they look good, keep paying attention to them and they should treat you well.

You want to look for pre flower indicators called pistils on females. Little white hairs.

Males will grow literal “balls”, pollen sacs

This is the most recent example I have. You can see the sacs forming on this plant I just cut down.

Anyhow if you wait for the plants to mature enough they will begin to show these signs before you flip them. I think usually around 6 weeks into veg a healthy plant should begin to develop these signs.

I too am always learning so someone with more experience can probably explain better or correct me if I’m wrong.

I'm going to plead ignorance. This is only my second grow and I messed up the first with a male in the tent way, way too long. How can I identify sex before flower?
I always wait for preflowers to show me sex before I up pot. Usually in 4 to 6 weeks all plants will show who's who. I often use a magnifier to inspect for em, and look for pest sign at the same time.
Use the same magnifier to inspect flowering ladies for any signs of intersex.

There is only one thing you absolutely need in order to grow good weed.

Patience.

Like @Dezzy and @Bullfrog 's pics show you will see the preflowers develop at each node. They are usually easiest to see towards the top of any branch, if I don't have readers on its almost impossible for me see them.

One way to predetermine sex is to cut a branch off, put it in a glass of water and put it under 12/12 lighting. Top up / replace water every fee days. Within a few weeks it should show sex.

These two plants are a bit shy of 8 weeks. Here's a shot I took of each plant this morning. I'm not seeing any indication, but perhaps I'm missing something.

That second photo shows a preflower on the left branch node. That little protrusion that sticks out, looks like a preflower to me anyway. Doesn't look female to me but like I said before I'm half blind.

Preflowers don't usually appear at every node, gotta look around sometimes. Males are hard for me to tell early but if there's preflower and no hairs, well it's probably not a female.

The first photo looks to maybe have preflowers on the other side of the node that's shown, I can't really tell though.

Please don't chop anything based on what I think I see. Eve if it's male it's not going to be dropping any pollen for quite a long while.

I'm thinking that looks boy from what I can see. Can you get a good straight on shot of the circled spot?

A male preflower looks like the little growth is on a node like a grape stem, and kinda shaped like a seed shell with green fingers.

A female preflower is more teardrop shaped and will get a whitish hair sticking out of the tip.
