Breeder pics: Day 43

JEM
So I am just picking up the fems, and rubbing them on the males every morning.
PXL_20210213_173412503.jpg

I really need to compost him but hes just so happy there.
PXL_20210213_173515284.jpg

Anvil
Breeder female, the strongest female is Anvil 03 in the Closet, 06 was her nearest competition. I will single branch 03 inside, but 06 is going to do the brunt of the seed birthing.
PXL_20210213_173543475.jpg

This was a plant I tried to give away but couldnt, nothing wrong with it, just have as much as I can handle right now and was trying to share some love. At the time she wasnt the strongest or the weakest (Anvil 07) of the bunch. She has been forced into the roll of seed birther.

Anvil 03. The largest and fullest Anvil. I just took that sticky card out of a Dynatrap to replace it figured Id leave it there vs. throw it away. Ive been running the traps in each room where plants grow this run and aside from the major issue in the Cabinet, they are kicking ass collecting stray fungus gnats.

JEM 11 - not really pictured here, shes behind JEM 06 in a 2gal Root Pouch.

The food crops started the other day, some sweet potatoes Im trying to grow slips from, and a CBG #1 from Seedsman. I have tried to germ these seeds 3 times, this is the third first two didnt work out for me. She doesnt look great.
PXL_20210216_041409150.jpg

Some from scratch cannascones with fresh blackberries that the wife made. She made a from scratch orange curd (with oranges she juiced by hand!) to go with them as well that was also mildly infused.

Day 47. Culled Anvil 04. His branching was significantly weaker than the other 2. He seemed to have a little deeper color, but that could be because the pollen sacs are less developed / smaller.

Not sure what to do with this one. Not interested in pollinating her, not interested in bringing her in or protecting her from pollen, Id almost consider culling her if I had any reason to. Ill just let her do her thing, she's in enough soil that I shouldn't need to do anything other than water her.
PXL_20210217_190349754.jpg

Started culling the JEM male with weaker branching but better sac set and realized I didnt snap a pic before I chopped his top, threw it back in for the pic. He has had plenty of time to drop pollen. The remaining JEM male has more branching, vigorous growth, and color on the sacs. Ill wait a few more days for him to drop some pollen, then cull him as well.

Some mail arrived. Still waiting on one more package before I can wet my next set. 10x 2gal commercial Rain Science bags and a single 15gal bag for my girls 2'x2' indoor flower/food/herb garden. Upon initial inspection I prefer the Radicle Bags, but the 2gal size of the Rain Science was key.

Got my Twenty20 and Roc Bud package from United Seed Bank, quick shipping, amazing communication, I'll be checking them out again in the future.

Picked up the last Wicked Pissah Mystery Mix from DCSE hoping to get the Wicked Myst Auto Regs that were advertised in the newsletter to add to my summer auto project, but I must have been too late, just got some more Copa reg testers.

Also picked up 20x of these starter cones. I like the idea, seems like a reusable fertilpot, but the shape leaves something to be desired. I am going to drill some 2" holes in a 1020 tray and rest it upside down on another 1020 tray, that should give me some stability with their shape, and allow them to wick from the lower tray. Ill use them on my next run, maybe side by side with a few other things.

Somehow forgot to get a pic of this one, she looks good. Small, but good. Better structure and purple color accents than 04.

Anvil 07 - the weakest or second weakest Anvil. 09 outside was a throwaway plant I couldnt find anyone to gift it to, so I stuck it in a 10galcpot of dirt next to the Anvil studs. I'll have to look at them both tomorrow and compare.
PXL_20210219_040638175.jpg

Anvil 05 - solid
PXL_20210219_041015467.jpg

Anvil 03 - the one that speaks to me. I will be single branching her with the 2 males outside. I may even sacrifice her and just let her and the boys hang out for an afternoon. She is, has, and looks like she will continue to be the dominant structured female this run, followed by 06 (outdoor seed birther), then 05 in my untrained and amateur eyes. 06 has been slowed by the cold outside so 05 looks bushier, but at the time of their separation their was no mistake 06 was more densely structured than 05.

Mixed some soil for my girls non canna 2' x 2' - same mix and volume I use (Coot's), except I mix and store my soil in 20gal Brute totes (UV stabilized "food safe plastic", and I can stack 3 high loaded with soil without deformation, also available in an assortment of colors - I use white because it makes it easy to track the mixes and dates using a whiteboard marker), this is going to cook in her tent. In this pic its also without the 20qts of peat, it went in after this shot was taken. For those that dont know, here's what you are looking at.

15qts Bu's Compost
5qts BAS Worm Castings
20qts Sunshine Peat Moss
20qts Pumice (for my latest soil mixes Ive been doing 10qts 3/8" pumice and 10qts 3/8" red lava rock, havent grown in it yet though)
2cups Neptune's Harvest Crustacean Meal
2cups DTE Kelp Meal
1cup Ahisma Karanja Meal
1cup Ahisma Neem Meal
2cups Cascade Minerals Basalt
2cups Ag Gypsum
2cups DTE Oysteral Shell Flour (Pacific Pearl)
2cups Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust

Nice! Where do you source the 3/8" lava rock from?

Nice! Where do you source the 3/8" lava rock from?
Early on when I started building my soils I spent a few weekends going to all the local materials yards, landscape supply, garden centers, hell I even went to lawnmower repair places asking for leads. Eventually I found a local guy for my bulk outdoor compost (I use bagged for indoor), and a place that actually bags up soils for other companies, where I have been able to source 3/16" and 3/8" pumice for a few years now. They had 3/4" red lava rock this whole time, but just the other day I noticed the 3/8”, to be fair this red lava rock is a lot of mixed sizes, 3/8” down to 3/16”. The pumice is very uniform in size. I give it a rinse in a big strainer, and then it goes into my mix.

Edit for the mix: I also add 2 cups of fresh blended Briess Malted Barley, and 1cup of BAS Insect Frass.

Picked up the Ladbrooke 2" soil blocker to help not have to buy, wash, and contribute to the abundance of plastics on this planet.
PXL_20210223_225241709.jpg

My mix isnt dialed, needed a little more moisture, might add a touch of vermiculite. Trying it out on these brussel sprouts, cabbage, bok choy, and some cold hardy early season tomatoes.
PXL_20210223_225319953.jpg

Nothing to report here.
PXL_20210223_225350420.jpg

Started some tomatoes. Laat year we did 48 varieties of tomatoes alone, a lot of orange tomatoes and cherry tomatoes, this year we are trying to dial in our production and preservation, so less variety overall, and staggered plantings. This is the first cycle of tomatoes. The Chocolate Cherry was my winner cherry tomato last year, the Sweetie was hers. We have a bunch of Wild Boar Farms, but honestly its been more difficult to get a sizeable crop from them in years past. Brad's Atomic Grape has always been producer, but we grew the Chocolate Cherry last year and while not as acidic, the tomato flavor was much more robust. We've been at this a few years now, so we have our favorites. But alas, I digress... More to come later.

I was just sitting on the deck enjoying a bowl and decided to cull Anvil06. Weak stem rub, she just isnt pretty... A year ago I would have never killed a healthy plant, this year Ive gladly killed 5 or 6. Its nice to have deep coffers of seeds to run.

Its nothing personal...
