The synopsis of the show made it sound pretty funny.
Lasted 15 years, so must've been good. Worth checking out?
The humour is so dry it will drop the humidity around your place by at least 10%, then it goes so slapstick it would make Chevy Chase blush.

For me it's a TV version of comfort food. The characters are like the guys around the ol' coffee shop or curling rink, in all their small-town, redneck glory. It pokes fun without being mean-spirited.
Something will always give me a chuckle, and it even makes me think once in a while. I hadn't seen it for ages but recently downloaded a bunch of seasons and am enjoying it.

I've seen the baby crows do something new a few times now when they are playing. One will flop over on its side and make goofy noises and then the other will flop over right beside it. They're back on their feet right away, but it's funny to see. I've also seen them playing tug of war with feathers or twigs, yet they never fight over food or the water dish. The family dynamic among them all, the all-for-one attitude, is very cool to see.

------------------------

Wasn't sure if I'd scared them off this time, but they've been back to feed, so I guess they know.

There were 4 crows feeding and playing in the yard and I noticed a damn squirrel there, too. I will not have those rats on my property! I ducked inside to grab the pellet pistol and when I came out a few seconds later the fucking thing had its head under the gate to my deck, just a few feet away, looking up at me. It ducked back under and went back in the yard. It was maybe 4 feet from a crow when I shot it. It scrabbled a few feet and was dead in seconds and the crows left.

That's twice they've been present when I shot one, though last time they weren't nearly as close. It's definitely gratifying that they know I can do that yet they still come within a few paces of me every day.

I watched the first one and got several laughs out of it.
The wife even came down the hall to see what her what I was laughing at.

Been a while. Things have been running smooth and I've been fishing, so not a lot to report.

It seems like baby fish will never stop appearing. The largest of this summer's hatch are well over an inch long yet there are still tiny ones, too. Going to trap and preserve the adults soon for fish bait and hopefully overwinter some of the small ones.
The foliage is ridiculous. I never imagined this amount of thickness and variety. As the season goes on, more new flowers keep appearing. I've started cutting back some of it to reduce the amount of dead material falling in the pond.

Still hanging out with the crows every day. Not sure if the group of four little ones together was a temporary arrangement among family groups or if something befell them, but it's generally just two babies these days. One is small and still cute as hell. The other I call Bran the Broken. Not sure if you are a GOT fan, but the actor who played Bran went from this cute little kid to this awkward-looking teenager with a big nose. Bran the crow also has an oversized beak and is quite distinct looking from the other young ones.

Scruff and Harold are still around and quite relaxed with me. I actually have trouble telling them apart(father and son, AFAIK). The old female, who I call Mama Twitch, comes to the yard every day but is still jumpy. I've got to see her close up quite a bit and she is by far the easiest to identify. She is as ugly as Monday morning. Her feathers have whiteish patches, her head is small, and she has big, buggy eyes. I've become pretty fond of her. She's the only one I throw food out on the lawn for, as she's nervous about the platform.

hopefully overwinter some of the small. ones

I am full of questionable ideas, if ya wanna pick me brain.

Something as simple as a tote would work just fine. Although, viewing through an aquarium adds another dimension
🥁🥁😏

I do not know how I would approach winter with a pond your size.
My pond is small enough that I can easily empty it, and clean it by hand.

I imagine if the pond is large enough it has the inertia to digest through the seasons.

'Trash' pumps could be rented for a day, if you are so inclined. Vacuum that baby right out.

I have another tactic that I've used, but I don't know how it applies to your situation, as I am absolutely unfamiliar with how winter affects your style of pond liner.
Come spring, simply toss your garden hose into the water. Keep moving the hose around for a few days, until the juices run clear.
I don't know if your particular landscaping would allow for something like that, but it would work.
The mulm will eventually get chased out.
It's simply a matter of ratios.

Thank you sir. I may well take advantage of having an extra brain at my disposal. :)

Right now it isn't that I have no ideas, it's that I need to pick one and get to work. It's usually not the big picture that slows me down, it's all the little debugging and trouble-shooting tasks that take time and get tedious.

Crow drama going on out there.

There is a very small juvenile hanging around that apparently has sinned against the murder. There's two of the adults feeding and every time the little one gets near it gets harassed and chased. It sits on the fence making sad noises and shrugging its wings before trying again.

I considered trying to feed it, but then realized I have no place getting involved. Whatever happens, it's Nature's Way.

Just saw the waxwing video, I did not realize those things could hover like that.
I still cannot get over how handsome they are.
What a treat !

I am sitting here wishing I saw more of them, contemplating their diet.
Cant be a coincidence that flashy birds enjoy high-end feed.
Seems like you gotta step up, and pay up to attract the premium crowd. I am going to shop around for trees and shrubs, to help in that department.

Finches want their Nyger, hafta buy peanuts to bring the blujays.
Wanna see some real fancy-pants'rs? Need suet

I was thinking about you the other day, Amarok. Guy on Kijiji down here has 12 inch koi fish, for $15 a piece.
I just don't have the water volume for it. One adult koi would be almost too much for my pond.
I have 8 comet goldfish, which should max out at 6 inch or so. That will be plenty enough for my 4-ft aquarium
Although, at that price, for only $45, I could see a blue heron in my backyard.

I was hoping you'd see that. :) Glad you enjoyed.

It's so cool that there are already returners. The waxwings (like lots of birds, I'm finally noticing) flock up in the spring and fall before dispersing to nest in the summer. I had the spring flocks of adults and now the fall families are getting ready to head south.
I presume you saw the males, females, and young in the vid. I'm so happy that turned out, I was at absolute maximum 12 feet from them. The noise of their wings was incredible at times as they zipped around close enough to feel the air they displaced. I should have just enjoyed the one on my shoulder, but since I had my phone in hand, I was trying to get a photo in the few seconds I had(~3-4).

I had a bird feeder for a bit in the spring before taking it down. There are fruits and berries, the sunflower seeds are ripening, the flowers attract insects, IE there is lots of natural food.
The only birds I feed are my crow pals, just like they have their own water and bath containers. They get special treatment.

My research lead me to think that koi are voracious, dirty, root up plants, and require large amounts of water and filtration.
The fish themselves are cool: friendly and good-natured and can be hand fed, but more maintenance than I'm willing to put in.

Yup.

And that is what makes them attractive, strictly from a aquaponics perspective.
Poormans Tilapia, and more durable.

Any balanced fish system has micro-biotic contributions. It takes some poundage to start producing macros (N-P-K) of significant value.

Not evangelism, just making conversation.
Personally, I prefer smaller fish.
I can construct an entire universe for a 1 inch fish.
I dont like seeing a tiger in a crate.

I feel dumb, I wasn't thinking aquaponics, just general pond critters.

Yeah, I can absolutely see how koi would be great for providing material for an aquaponic system.
In fact, you just got me rethinking the possibility of axolotl. I'm too lazy to deal with the waste myself, but if I had plants to do it...

Indeed.
I changed topics.

,,,and I will do it again 😜

Aquarium maintenance ain't so bad, these days. Before I was gardening, it seemed like a chore to change the water every couple weeks. Now that the plants are stealing it, seems no thing to top it back up.

Most filtration rules go out the window with massive/constant water changes.
All of the actions, modes and benefits of mech and bio filtration are nullified with perpetual water draw. Like those fish farms in Florida; fresh water flows into the pen,,, and then more. No protocol to improve water quality, other than replace it with quality water. 😁
Dont know what your water demands are , over the course of the winter,,,,

4 plants. Say 4 plants.
I believe you could absolutely keep 100+ of your minnows, in a 30 gallon tote, circulation pump only.
30 count, with no pump.
Oxygen will be adequate, water will stay clean enough.

Cannas happy, fish are happy.
