I love the Handle on that! I prefer them to be one handle Reels myself. I've had some where they have they "paddle handle" that is double sided, but I don't like how they operate. I know that's personal preference, but I like mine to have Power Handles.

I just looked up the specs on that; They have between 24 and 28 pounds of drag on those! That's pretty sweet; you could use that on all kinds of fish.
I love the power handle too. That is my first reel with one. The 25 lb drag is nice and is the only spec that sets that reel apart from the Shimano Tranx 400. The Abu Garcia Revo Toro beast also has a 25LB drag. Other than that, those three reels seem built pretty much the same.

Yeah I didn't know much about that exact one, so I had to google it, and saw the specs chart, which was pretty sweet I must say :) The handle is where it's at though bro; I do have an Abu 6000, and it's an old one the Wife found used for 6 dollars, all metal, made in Sweden and all that, and for a while I used it to cast lures on one rod, while I had two others sitting out with bait looking for Catfish. The Wife learned how to cast a bait cast Reel with that Abu, so once she got an actual conventional Rod, I let her have the Abu, as the smaller size was a LOT easier for her to cast with.

I do like a couple of things Shimano has, but the cost of them usually keeps them out of my reach LOL. The Penn Reels I drool over, one was a gift, and one was a stimmy check purchase LOL. Only way I could get something like that myself.

You know I couldn't help but notice the retrieve rate on those ones you're using; That's a sweet number! The "fastest" Reel I own is the size 25 Fathom Lever Drag, which is 36 inches per full crank, but I think I saw one of those 400s can actually top that too.

You ever tear the lure back at high speed to try and trigger a response from the Musky ? As top predators, they're territorial, and I imagine they would hit one simply for going fast at times. Haven't gotten to try that as of yet though.

Every time there's one following a spinner I speed it up. It took me a while to train myself to not just slow down a bait to let them eat it because they wont. Those fish follow all the way into the boat and you have to play a game of keep away, to actually catch one. It's super exhilarating. If you let the blades stop spinning, they stop their pursuit instantly and spook off. Other baits like big jerk baits etc., they will hit it on the pause. Sometimes those fish follow lures in just to check them out

I've seen how they do that around the boat even, and, the reason for doing the figure 8 for them, as they have REALLY good eye site, and they come in to investigate the lure, and decide on hitting it or not. The speed thing, I'm so happy to hear I guessed right! I may land one before I die haha!

One of the things with lures is, there's SO many ways you can use them, that it's almost hard to change one you truly think is right, because there's always another speed and technique you can use to try again.

As they say; "Any lure is a top water if you retrieve fast enough" LOL. You know we have world class Musky and Sturgeon water here ? That dude Zeb Hogan from Monster Fish came here for Sturgeon, and another show filmed here for Musky. Apparently we're right up there with "Sunset Country" Ontario. I've seen some of the Musky landed from near by.... Bro it would be SO hard to put one back.... The one I saw was like Leopard Print..... I'd have his ass in a pond, feeding him the bird that pooped on my Cheetos Seedling.

The only thing I don't like about paddle-trolling with the canoe is that I can't hold the rod and work the lure. When I use a motor and can hold the rod it's a different game. I can respond to what I feel. Often a pike will follow and tap at a lure for 50 yards or more while I try different yanks and pauses before he finally takes the hook.

Well, if you could paddle and yank at the same time, it wouldn't give the other hookers a fair chance... :)

Last minute cabelas grab before the Musky in the Mountains. Getting rain and a temp drop so we’re hoping to still find some active fish. These savage glide baits are fantastic and I figured the ghost bone pattern would pop nice if the water is muddy

How long are you going for, Mim? I hope everything works out and there aren't any significant bugs in the new boat. Have a blast, and be safe, brother!

On the importance of a name:

Does anyone else see this brand
iu

and read "pissy fun"?

I get that they are going for a take on "piscean", but still....

Some Catfish anglers like their Reels. They essentially look like the Ambassador series from Abu, and operate about the same from the reviews I've seen.

Mim, that temp drop, may actually work in your favor; Musky are a fairly cool water species, and I've read that if you can find cool spots in the water, they tend to be near by. They don't like it warm anymore than I do apparently LOL.

I wasn't talking about the product. I was talking about the name of the product, and the importance in choosing a name.

Due to said name, I'm sure I won't be the only one who has never even looked at their gear.

Similar to on an ice-fishing forum I visit, where every year or so someone starts a thread about this gear maker who has to put their logo of a big, bearded face all over everything they make. (It's ludicrous, the tents have this 2 foot high face on them, the clothes have this face on the sleeves and back, and all over.) Guys say they hate the look and won't own the gear because of it. Is the stuff any good? We'll never know because it looks too dumb to buy.

I have no respect for 99% of what marketers do, but there has to be a basic understanding of the target demographic and their tastes.

I think the big face plastered on everything is a bit silly... I think they're aiming at the "country boy" and how one is "supposed to look" with that personally. Like when you see a video of someone hunting on TV, and they have gear worth more than an average house with them, to nail a critter and get like 60 bucks worth of meat from it... "Oh I use this brand... Sure each bullet costs 18 dollars, but it's made my AMERICANS so it's better..." *sigh* LOL.

In the Catfish world we call those "angler lures" because they don't catch anything but fisherman.

You can aim all you want, but you ain't gonna tell a country boy what to like. We aren't looking for some made-up hero like Beardo to follow, we make our own adventures.

Apparently the owner has been on the forum before and gets stupidly defensive bout his big bearded logo. His call. 🤷‍♂️

Well, when it comes to running a business, sometimes you stand by your decisions even when it costs you customers, and sometimes, you can realize that your core customers won't even look at it because they think something about it is stupid. I mean, if he wants to reinvent the Marlboro Man that's fine, but, personally ? I'd take that logo off and attempt to make money to pay the bills.

You just made me so glad that I don't have to deal with this stuff LOL; There are simply not enough people into Catfish angling to bother with hype half the time haha.

Just left the banquet. Only 4 fish caught over 20 teams today and I had hooks in two 😭. I couldn’t believe it when Frank pulled the net out the water empty on my last one, I have no idea what happened. So salty lol.

First place had 12 fish on fly rods, small boat and just a trolling motor. I guess they were somewhere deep down south and have fished their creek for the tourney the last two years and it finally turned on for them.

Big fish used live scope 🤮

2nd place had 3 fish to total.

The weather change definitely made us work for these fish this weekend. End of the day, had a blast and I’m not all that bothered about how much I bragged up the boat because it is pretty dang awesome. That’s fishin…. And I still love it.
