I don't know everything there is to know about the Ogitigan and the plant relations like the relative's within the Mukwa Dodem (Bear Clan) but it is a lifetime study and commitment for the herbalist.
As you see in the wheel above many plants are ceremonials and highly revered. One might ponder upon just how a clan could be so knowledgeable about the plant world. It's rather simple, but it's a sacred story. Long ago the two leggeds were much weaker and the Bear led the people closest related to explore and watch it as a Medicinal Chief Animal and the Bear has taught the people about Mishkiikii for eons untold.
Most people think of the hibernation of Mukwa and think about getting fat and sleeping a long time during the coldest of the winter. In reality Mukwa needs Mishkiikii (strength from the earth) in order to prepare it's stomach for the long fasting ahead and it is the plants it uses to fill it's stomach with a plug. Once spring arrives and it's time for Mukwa to emerge from the den once again the first thing it does is eats Cedar and other herbs to begin awakening the stomach in preparation for the purging of the medicine plug within the stomach.
I don't go against the traditional protocols, so I can not write about the sacredness and deeper things that there's to know about the path of the herbal healers and the Bear, let alone begin to explain that reverence for all of creation. But I do enjoy sharing what I can in text about the worldview and cultural knowledge.
Outside of the ceremonials and medicinals the plants for food , tools and medicines are much easier to talk more about in depth. Medicine is a very universal thing within Anishinaabek culture, so I reference this here as plant Medicine, and not ceremonials as they too are medicinals but the esoteric is a part of the reverence due and nothing more. Back to the exoteric. I'm going to be sharing more than just a basic concept here for others, but it's going to take time and efforts on my part to be able to break things up and simplify what really can't be. Quixotic, that is the English word that comes to mind. It's also a cultivar I have been working on too
Okay I said enough for now..Baamaapii
