It's the little things that kids today will never understand. Like this^^, or when you found a long sought album.

Today's incredible ease of access is amazing. If you have an internet connection, you can pretty much hear anything ever recorded, on demand. But you'll never know that absolute treasure-hunter joy of finding a previously unknown bootleg, or an obscure out-of-print album by your favorite artist, in a record store or pawn shop or flea market.

Not a judgement of anything, just an observation.
Us back then : Camping out on weekends , fishing down the local jetty till midnight , getting chased by the cops on your pushbike for some petty fun , Coming home in Summer time only because dinner was ready and you had school the next day , Hanging out at the local Pinball parlour or local Cinema
Today : I got 36 likes on Facebook .......I’ve arrived in the world !!!

Even something as simple as slang has changed forever.

Slang used to identify a group, and allow some degree of private communication among members of that group. For a historical example, Cockney rhyming slang was almost unintelligible to outsiders. In modern times, my friends and I almost had our own language of mutated words and inside references.

Now, shared slang means you belong to the same subreddit, or follow the same celebrity's social media. That intimate sense of belonging is gone.

So I ain't gonna lie guys, while I'm sure there are kids that fit the stereotypes your presenting I feel like your slightly romantizing our childhoods and simultaneously not giving kids these days enough credit. Are there some that spend too much time hunting for social media likes and such? Sure. But I'll tell you what, that's not how my teenager rolls. She couldn't care less. Before this pandemic her and her crew had their hangouts just like I did... they'd all walk to the local Mac Ds and hang out til the staff finally got sick of them. And they sure as hell have their own slang we don't understand and shes never even been to a subreddit (most I dont understand anyways.... I actually just really enjoy playing the ignorant old man roll too and embarrassing my daughter by misusing popular slang words around her friends). And forums.... those are for the Olds lol.

When we were all kids there were always popular kids vying for prom king and jocks and squares and whatever. Things aren't as different as we'd like to think they are. Technology may have changed the delivery but kids didn't suddenly turn into a bunch of lazy lame asses. That's just what every aging generation thinks of the one coming after then.

My only real criticism of these younger generations is their obsession with Starbucks.... like seriously, what the fuck? We live in a time where amazing, locally roasted coffee is more accessible than ever before and your gonna go spend $7 on that shit? And you can't even just call it a medium?? I'd rather have a Dunks...

Anyways, Im just trying to take a step back these days and not judge the kids so harshly. That's enough outta me. I could go on at length about the code me and my crew spoke in as well, but let's get back to the funny stuff!

Personally, as a Dad, I'm very proud.

Also, overall, today's kids are a lot more politically and environmentally aware than we were. I was in no way disparaging the kids.

In addition to parenthood, I spend a lot of time around younger people in a work setting and generally I really enjoy the experience. I enjoy getting their perspectives.

I was just talking about some of the things that have changed culturally. A new meme now goes around the world in an hour or two and kids in London, England and London, Ontario are laughing at the same stuff and using the same new words. I'm not saying that is better or worse, just different from how we grew up in our insular, non-connected world.

Same thing with discovering new music: it has changed. Pointing out differences doesn't imply a value judgement.

As for @Ramjet159 , I understand his frustration with the youth of today.

I did some research and here is a typical Australian teenager in 1984:

And here is the average Aussie kid in 2021:

I'b be disappointed too. ;)

Your spot on . If anything I get a little annoyed and can’t help feeling these huge networks like Facebook and other media giants have robbed our kids of the real beauty in this world being transfixed on their Cell phones etc and yes it’s not lost on me we are ourselves now using this platform . Just seems the balance is way out of whack for our kids . I totally get your point having said that . My kids are happy as well ?
