Quitting Cigarettes?

Anyone have any tips, alternatives, or success stories when it comes to quitting cancer sticks? I think I'm finally ready to give up smoking. I've been smoking cigs since I was 18, I'm now in my 30's and I'm seeing how smoking has effected my health. I get winded too quick, I noticed this climbing stairs - I've also developed a smokers cough. When I'm stressed out I especially chain smoke, if I quit smoking I'm gonna have to find a new outlet for that nervous energy and I think that will be the hardest aspect.

I quit with the help of Chantix. Ate snacks (bag little Debbie donuts daily). Took 6 months before all cravings were gone. Also wore a rubber band on my wrist, and snapped it when I thought of a cig.

Good luck, and remove yourself from craving situations (bars, clubs), until tou feel like you can handle w/o quitting being a quitter.

I quit in 2001. I can't even stand the smell of a cigarette smoker. It's a very nasty smell once you quit.

I learned a trick with chantix.... on the start of week 2, is when you start your 2 pill a day dose. Take the 2nd pill (night) at 7pm (no later). This will lessen the dreams you have while sleeping.

I was a fighter jet pilot in dogfights for 4 nights back to back until I took the night pill way earlier.

Tried Chantix, ya nightmares!
No thanks.
Iā€™ve always wondered if I was just ready, but I just quit one day.
I always smoked a cigarette after a joint, same with beer.
After quitting this time for a day, I smoked a joint, then lit a cig, it totally destroyed the nice buzz I had!
I was high, but felt ā€œnegativeā€, if that makes sense?
I wonder if someone else ever experienced that?
That was Fatherā€™s Day several years ago. Havenā€™t had or wanted one since and my wife smokes. (Outside)
They say thereā€™s nothing worse than a reformed smoker. My Dad almost threw me the shower door when I got caught @ 13.
He had a ā€œNo Smokingā€ sticker on his company car glovebox.
This was back when you could smoke in church. :stoned:

For me it was good ol' cold turkey šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

It was NOT easy at first, but I just with it to the point where not smoking became the new norm. FWIW I don't have the greatest self-discipline nor willpower, but I was still able to make this work.

For MONTHS, the worst part was buying gas, as that's always when I bought my cigarettes. I'd pay at the pump instead of going inside, but literally every time for MONTHS, I'd start walking into the gas station and have to physically check myself "NO!" then turn back to my car. Many times, I'd repeat that process a couple times; other people were probably like "why tf is this dude pacing" šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ lol!

I'd say about 6 months in, is when everything just came together & no longer had the cravings to buy, BUT, even to this day I still have that occasional" sneak a smoke" dream

You know, I've been putting serious thought into stopping this myself. I've been smoking since I was 18, and my sense of smell and taste would likely improve if I'd just do that one thing.

I have, for my very first time, found something that genuinely helps me... And to the shock of absolutely NO ONE it's Alpha Skunk Cheese.

I've smoked a lot of different strains in my days, and this one is different. The Wife and I both noticed this about her too; We were smoking some a while back, and both of us realized that, after we smoked the joint, where we normally would light up a smoke right after, we had no real "craving" to do so.

I've been "testing this with vigor" (READ: Went through half a pound already of that strain) and sure enough, when we smoke that one, I don't have the same craving for a cigarette that I normally do. And it's not because I'm so stoned I forgot if I did smoke.... Sometimes I'll be like "Oh, right, I still have had one, but I'm going to do this first, and then that, and then I'll come back in the bedroom and have one". Almost like smoking that gives me a choice where I can just say "not yet".

I know, I know, of all the people to find another use for Cheese, it was me... LOL.

Iā€™d be curious for you to quit cigs for a day and then smoke one after a joint to see how it affects you.
I knew instantly what I was going to do. Done!
Not to mention, they are hard on your teefs and toof repair ainā€™t cheep!

They were $60 a carton (Salem) when I quit.

The biggest thing for me, if this helps

I just didn't enjoy doing it anymore šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø like, if you still actually enjoy smoking, or enjoy stepping away to have one, then by all means enjoy yourself šŸ‘ you're all going to die of SOMETHING anyway, might as well be something you enjoy doing šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø lol! Seriously though

Sure we all are "gonna die someday". But one doesnt need to make Phillip Morris any more money than they already have made. When I started, they were 1.75/pack. I quit at 4.50/pack. F Philip Morris and their nasty chemicals that's in their cancer sticks.

Edited:
I put away $ each week after I quit for a vacation at the end of the yr. I spent less on a 1 week vacation vs spending $ on cigs daily. 1 week snowboarding out west, airfare, hotel, food/drink, lift tickets, shuttle fees, etc. I did this for 5 yrs back to back.

The Chantix dream thing was real! Maybe that was the issue....maybe too effin real, lol. Mine were all good ones.

...i was driving this big titantic type boat...but it was made of bricks.....i smashed into a few things but gave nary a fuck. I jumped off right before it sank and then woke up. :)

If that dream potential could be had as a supplement.....I just might play!

Jeezus that sounds like a weird fever-dream šŸ¤’šŸ˜‚

On that note . . ... Does anyone get recurring dreams or a recurring dream theme when you're sick?? --for me, it's kinda like that scene in Indiana Jones when he gets chased by the boulder, but the boulder looks like a ginormous potato & it's chasing me down a winding mountain road šŸ’€šŸ’€šŸ’€šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ lol! If I feel that type of dream coming on, I literally KNOW I'm sick in & then out of the dream. It's like "oh shit here we goooo" šŸ˜‚

Nope, every dream I had during the chantix days, I was a fighter jet pilot, shooting down the enemy! Kinda funny, as my cousin is a captain in the Air Force, and was a fighter jet pilot. Now he picks up our guys on the battle field in massive bomber type of planes.

Side note
I did NOT gain any weight when I quit smoking. I graduated is '93 at 165lbs. I weigh 175 now. That's from the beer and being lazy.

In my dream, I was run over by a floating brick! :stoned:

Thanks for the advice everyone! I've never been on Chantix but I've been on Wellbutrin which is practically the same thing. It definitely made me cut down on my cig intake, cigs tasted totally different on them. Usually for me weed & cigarettes go together, after I smoke weed I smoke a cigarette. Breaking the habit definitely isn't gonna be easy. I don't buy packs of cigarettes anymore, I roll my own with an electric cigarette filler machine. It's cheaper, but the only down side to that is I smoke more.

Wellbutrin is NOT anything like chantix. I tried Wellbutrin for 3 days, HELL NO!!!!

Chantix stops the receptors in the brain from acknowledging the nicotine, and making it taste really bad. So eventually you ween off and quit.
Wellbutrin is practically Chantix.. Doctors often prescribe Wellbutrin instead because some people's insurance won't cover Chantix.

*edit* I do agree they're different chemicals, but they do the same thing.

I'm not fond of taking pills. I used to be on Effexor, it had the worst withdrawal side effects I've ever experienced. If I missed a few doses I'd be puking my brains out.
