Yesterday a lightbulb went off in my head. I'm almost a bit embarrassed to share, but for the betterment of the growing community, here's what not to do.

If you're a Jacks 321 grower, do not use scolding hot water to speed up the nutrients dissolving in water.

Long story short, I was seeing Mg deficiencies in these new plants. I was having those same issues with rockwool.... I couldn't seem to put my finger on it. I gave it some thought and the very last thing I could think of was the hot water playing a role. About a year ago I bought an electric kettle and have been using that to get the water to an almost boiling temperature to speed up the nutrients dissolving. I never figured it was the culprit. But looking back at the timeline, shortly afterwards I remember augmenting with Calimagic and chalked it up as the lights being LED and causing it, or the plants were just hungry.
But this time what I'm seeing is the new growth always starts out looking perfect, followed by those leaves fading out and becoming discolored. I believe Mg is mobile so this would make sense. If it was a Ca issue I believe the new growth would be more discolored to begin with, rather than starting green then fading.

I got on the phone yesterday and talked to a representative from JR Peters. I asked her if this would play a role. Her answer was a quick 'yes'. She also said the water temperature shouldn't exceed 77-78 degrees F when mixing the 5-12-26.
So I rushed home from work at the end of the day and immediately dumped the reservoir and mixed up a new batch of nutrients and got to work. Uppotted the GG4 and gave the others a good watering with at least 25% runoff. They're only two weeks old so I'm confident that they'll rebound. I'll probably give them some recharge later this week for a little microbe boost.

So yeah, don't use hot water because it'll fuck up your plants and make you feel dumb. I seriously thought I forgot how to grow for a while. But this gives me a confidence boost because the timeline matches perfectly. I'm actually not as hesitant to try rockwool again knowing this information.

Good info @ricky_simples . I use the Jacks as well but have not used hot water to make the mix. I have used it in the past with Mega crop trying to dissolve it. Who would have thought that would be a issue

This is interesting, thanks for sharing. Did they share specifics of what interactions they believe are happening when the water is that temp while mixing?

Alight guys I need some input on inexpensive gifts to give to my wife's side of the family.

Her brother is a rugged, outdoorsy, burly hunter type guy. His wife is also heavy into the outdoors. Her mom is kind of a hippie stoner and her dad likes to wrench on things.

Here's what I got so far...

Brother - $15 pack of tannerite. A big jar of wild game seasoning. A pack of the Salsa El Gallo. Geber Crucial multi tool.
His Wife - Meater's FIsh & Game Cookbook. A complete scented candle making kit.
Her Mom - 4-pack of those two-hitter pipes I posted the other day. Comes with a travel case. A set of double walled mugs.
Her dad - Wowtac H01 headlamp. A jar of wild salmon seasoning.

Any input on inexpensive gifts in the $10 - $30 range is appreciated. Looking for something to get their 2 year old daughter as well.

She did not get into specifics, but said it has an affect. She did mention the Mg in the 5-12-26 is what takes the longest to solubilize, which is funny because typically Epsom Salt does so quickly, but I'm not sure if Epsom Salt is the Mg is made of in the 5-12-26.

That is very interesting.

I'm currently using a mixture of Maxibloom and Megacrop until they run out, before switching to the Jacks that is sitting in the closet. I've never used Jacks, so you may have saved me some trouble.

A few months back I started mixing in hot tap water and have not had any issues to this point. For information purposes, my process is to add the approximate amounts of powder to an empty pint jar and then fill the jar with very hot tap water. I stir the jar vigorously and then pour it into a two gallon watering can nearly full of room temp water. I mix that and then use the TDS and PH meters to fine tune.

This method has been much faster than my old practice of mixing it all in room temp water, waiting a few hours and re-agitating before using. I get the same PPM now in a few minutes that it used to take hours to achieve.

My own nature will make me experiment with the Jacks, I am sure, but this may be invaluable trouble-shooting information. Thank you, Sir.

Those are all solid ideas.

As any hobbyist knows, people tend to give us cheap versions of things we've already bought, because they don't know any better. For example, I must have at least 8 filleting knives.

The stuff you named is all thoughtful and useful. Consumables like the tannerite and seasoning are always handy. Creative distractions like the candle kit are extra cool during lockdown times.

My only thoughts are some Mechanix or similar gloves for the dad, and for the mom you could maybe combine your two ideas?

@Agent Trent Hauser Spot on with the Mechanix gloves. I ended up getting a pair for the father in law and brother in law.

You're so right about receiving gifts from someone who knows that you're into a specific hobby to find out you own a better version of the item. This has happened to me so many times, lol. It's the thought that counts, but I always tell people not to buy me anything because I have everything I need. Unless someone is going to go out of their way to get me a specific brand / model of something that I want, I tell them to just save the money and buy me a card and pack of socks haha.

My wife has learned to never buy a shirt for me because I'm picky about them. It either has to be tri-blend (cotton, polyester, and rayon) or merino wool. I always smile and accept the gifts but they end up in my closet, unused, until the next time I find time to clean and bring donations to the thrift store.

Absolutely. When they think of me at gift time, it's "oh yeah, he's a fisherman, get him something for fishing".

To them, it's my hobby/interest/quirk, but to me this is serious shit. I have already field-tested decades of gear. I know how, where and why I fish. I do research. I talk to my peers. I know what specific item I intend to have for a specific use.
If you are going to gift me any other version of that item, please don't. I'd honestly much rather have you give to charity or buy yourself a beer because then someone will get some use from that money and I won't have to smile and tell you how much I like it. I hate being made to lie.

That's why the gifts you listed were cool. If they don't like the spice, they can now remove it from the list of "maybes" for their own future purchases. If they do like it, they can get their own in perpetuity and will think of you when they do. The cookbook may introduce them to a future lifetime of pleasurable new meals, or at least provide a good idea or two. The Mechanix are the kind of thing pretty much everyone with skinned knuckles and grease under his fingernails will appreciate and use.

Practical and useful are easy, IMO. It's the little ones that can be tricky to buy for. They will like most stuff, but when you see them light up when the box opens and you know you dun real' good, that is magical.

I'm picking up that you like to fish lol. What kind of fish do you go for?

I'm a walleye guy but I just like to get on the water. A good buddy of mine strictly fishes for Muskie. I've got another buddy that is infatuated with catching flatheads.

@ricky_simples on the daughter note, my son used to love getting books about the things that interested his mom and I.... so like kids stories about fishing or hiking, or in her case photography... he would get all excited he knew the words for all the gear and stuff from the books. I appreciated it too, because if I had to read one more damn paw patrol book I would've lost my damn mind

@Agent Trent Hauser im the same as you guys... I tell everyone not to buy me gifts. If they have to get me something just get me a gift card. I have more than I need and if there's anything I want it's undoubtedly super specific. My dad can't help himself though, he's always buying me the wrong versions of things I want... Luckily he always shops at an awesome store so I saved up my last 3 years Xmas gifts from him and brought them back to swap for a Patagonia vest haha... I keep telling him to stop but he just insists and tells me to return it if I don't like it. It's his version of a gift card I guess lol

I'm pretty hardcore, I suppose. Been fishing since I could walk, according to the ol' man. Grew up walking trout streams and fishing the beaver dams on the eastern slopes of the Rockies. Mostly fish toothy guys these days, pike and walleye, though burbot has become my favorite winter fish.
Caught my first sturgeon a few years back, first tiger trout last winter. I only have one game fish left to catch in the province but don't know if I'll bother as they are small and only in remote water.

what a revelation. If you take a look at my journal Ive been battling what looks like a Mag deficiency in several plants for weeks and cant nail it. I use hot water to mix my megacrop and whatever else im using.... Did you just solve the paradox?

Very cool. My state borders Manitoba and I've had the opportunities to fish up there twice in my life. Fishing back home is not the same. No matter how good people say fishing is in the states, nothing beats casting lines in the north.

By any chance are you familiar with a Youtuber named Aaron Wiebe? He has a great channel called Uncut Angling. Been watching him for years now and learned a lot from him. Tim Gallati is another smaller channel I've been subbed to for years. He seems like a guy I'd like to go fishing with lol.

Biggest I've personally caught was 26'' and probably 6 or 7 lbs (2-3 kilos)? My mom still gives me a hard time because her record is a 10lb 30'' eye she caught on Woman River in Canada.

Are you by any chance familiar with the Konrad brothers? I know they held the record burbot at 25lbs and some change, not sure if that still holds today.

I just swung by your journal to take a quick glance. Are you referring to the discoloration on that Gelato? If so that looks like a Mg issue but I can't tell if it's also a Ca issue. Since your plants are flowering they have those damn pre-flowers in the way, which typically have a yellow tint, so it's hard for me to see the 'green' on the new growth.

I do know that Ca deficiencies always begin with new growth since it's not mobile, and Mg always pulls from fan leaves because it's mobile. That 100% looks like what I'm dealing with too, Mg deficiency or lockout of some sort.

Shit man, maybe we're figuring this out together. Although I despise mixing dry nutrients in room temperature water, if it avoids these issues down the road I'm totally prepared to suffer. lol.

By strange coincidence, I have fished with one of the twins. It was an amusing day on a little sled-in brookie lake in the Swan Hills, fishing early ice. We likely won't fish together again. :devilish:

I haven't regularly watched any fishing shows since Bob Izumi and Reno and Italo on cable back in the day, though I've heard of Uncut and may have seen an episode or two. I have a positive association with that name in my wee brain anyway.

You are right about Manitoba being great fishing. I took a drive out one summer, just to see some new country and fish some new water, no real plan. I ended up having a great experience and caught 4 new species. Fished the Red River mostly, and a bunch of smaller streams as well. Was tempted to go a few more hours to Lake of the Woods, but wasn't set up for big water.
