We are going to go with Coast of Maine Stonington Blend super soil. They have a ton of it in stock at our local nursery. It just makes sense to go this route because it'll make it a lot less work and hassle when it comes time to water. No worrying about mixing half a dozen different things. Everything is in the bag. Just top dress in flower if needed. Maybe some teas. The only reason I've never went this route before is the cost. Promix is $13 for 3 cubic feet and Coast of Maine is $30 for 1.5 cubic feet. I can do five 3 gallon fabric pots per bag with CoM. The extra money spent is less pain in my back and the wife's shoulder plus im sure much tastier flowers. If we happen to need any nutrients we are gonna use the Roots Organic Uprising dry ammendment line. At first it will just be samples of Uprising grow, bloom and foundation but only if absolutely needed. Aurora innovations has a sample program, get 3 dry product samples or 2 liquid, just answer a few questions and pay 8.75 shipping. The last sample I got was super worth it. I think you all are gonna see a big improvement with our next grow compared to this one. After this run is done and the seedlings are up in the closet, we are cleaning and debugging as much as we can access in that basement. Tents are getting scrubbed twice. We'll have a vigorous IPM program next run so we don't end up with another thrip infestation or worse. In case anyone is interested and didn't know about the sample program I'll leave the link to the page below. It says it takes 4-6 weeks, my last sample took 11 days and lasted our whole first grow and half of veg this grow. Have a good night everyone☮☮

This morning have a coffee and a bowl and rethink this new idea. There's a Reason there's a shit ton left..
If it's been sitting outside all year it's not worth 30 a bag....
It's the end of the season up there, winter is coming and if your nursery is sitting on it you should be able to get a deal on it.... like cost..
Don't your wife work for Walmart?

Stoning ton is decent super soil. I’d suggest adding more aeration, perlite, pumice or rice hulls. Ime the soil is more easily compacted

I like Stonington blend but it is expensive. I didn't try it until recently because CoM regular potting mix is $15/bag for the 2 ft³. It does easily feed most plants for about 6 weeks before you need to top dress which is about 2 weeks longer than their standard mix or the Roots blend I was using before. Plants seem to really like it too. I'd agree with @Idlewilder that it could use some extra aeration/drainage.

It's a grear product, but normally I'd agree with Capt that it's still not worth the cost. But for you guys trying to keep the labor down it may be worth it. I'll tell you though, those bags are heavy. Part of why I'm using coco again for some things is I got sick of humping heavy ass bags of soil down into my basement.

I didn't say Don't Use It.

I said Don't Pay Retail for it at the end of the season..

I have No Idea Why he has so much.. but if you're going to try it.
Go in there for a Deal..
DON'T Just go there thinking about Retail.
This time of yr you should be able to get it cheaper.....

But Honestly I would do something different...

Thanks for the advice but we are cool with spending the extra money if it means much less back breaking work. Im tired of using the same shit I've been using for 10 years. It's either this or I retire from growing lol. Which would you choose? They aren't going to give me a deal, they don't work like that at alsip nursery. It's like trying to cut a deal with home depot. Not gonna happen

No, I don't work for Walmart, who ever said that? I work for another grocery chain. However, where I work shouldn't be your concern and it shouldn't be brought up in a thread.... That's a dangerous thing to do.
Anyways, neither one of of the stores have what we need. The promix has thrips in it and we are both busted and need less feeding. I drive up north to go to the dispensary anyway, so a quick trip to the nursery to get 3 or 4 bags of better soil at a little bit more of a higher price so that way we don't have to feed as much with a bad back (him) and bad shoulder (me), that is absolutely fine.
I thought there was supposed to be no drama on this site...
Please don't comment any further if you cannot give us support and only criticism. You got the hubby pissed off at the beginning of his day. You might be a big wig grower that can bargain with people because you're buying in bulk, unfortunately we aren't and we have to make smart decisions for what we put into it.
Thanks.

I got someone to carry that down.

I guess I really have no clue cause I use soil too but would it be easier to go full on hydro and just have a big rez or whatever than you’d just have to add water and nutes every once in awhile but again I’m a soil guy it just sounds easier in my head lol

Soil is easier. Can't do hydro, in a basement, in the winter time. With sometimes very negative degree weather. That's hard to keep heated.

Remember that first piece of shit that everyone's lived in unless you were fed with a silver spoon?? We are still there.
We have to keep everything in that piece of shit basement because the state we live in, deems we have to. Our liveable area in our home, is 920 sq feet!

I think this is just a case of internet miscommunication. I think all Capt was getting at with the Walmart comment was that you can get potting mix there for cheaper. He's a very thrifty grower and likes to help people save some money, I doubt he intended any harm. He's always telling me I spend too much on things lol. For some of us the extra cost is for the convenience though. Thats why I finally tried Stonington, I didn't feel like mixing all the ammendments in myself anymore.

I also think the haggling on price thing has more to do with your location than scale. When I lived in rural VT you could do that. End of season walk into a garden supply and ask if they'd discount stuff so it wouldn't sit all winter. Where I am now I'd just get laughed at. They know the indoor growers will be coming in all season and they'll sell it eventually, especially mixes like Stonington that were invented for cannabis.

Just wanted to share how I took things. I feel like 90% of internet arguments stem from basic misunderstandings because were not evolved to communicate in a vacuum with no facial expressions or body language.

Ya we’ve all been there just remember that’s your guy’s piece of shit tho it’s better than nothing I’ve been broke and I’ve been very comfortable I always tell people some of the best times of my life have been when I had absolutely nothing…mo money mo problems

Yeah, I'm in a similar situation. We barely fit in my little ass house. Tiny, old ass basement is currently my only option for growing. And my better half isn't as involved as you are (other than smoking the final product...)
