Me and my buddy were cleaning out a house after an estate sale and I found a little pocket watch marked 25 bucks and the guy was like Yeah you can keep it. It works perfectly and I looked it up. It's from 1880 to 1890. JWG initials on the back . I just love opening it up and looking at the mechanics of it. It's amazing. Love to find a chain for it and actually use it someday. Heck yeah! I have a nice one of the same color already. It's a lodge dutch oven that is like 50-80 bucks new, depending where you get it. I was mind blown when I saw it on the shelf. When I got to the thrift, there was like no place to park, two elderly people busses on a field trip, and lines to the back of the store. I debated on even looking, because I didn't want to stand in the line. I decided to check, and found the Lodge. 9.99 seemed like way too cheap given it was only chipped minor in exterior parts. I stood in line, and people with carts full of stuff, loved my find, and let me go ahead of them, since it was only 1 item I had. When I finally reached the register, the lady said that since the change part of the price was underscored twice, that meant it had lost a number before the 9.99. Her manager said it was 19.99 which was fine by me, but apparantly the reason for the big crowd was that everything was half off today. So I DID manage to score a Lodge dutch oven for 10.75 today. Now I have 2! I have been using mine a ton for stews, bread, and all kindsa neat stuff. I'm thinking the new one will be for camping/open fire this year.

@Mim Towls nice find in the Lodge dutch oven! I have a couple of the Lodge enamelware pans. I wouldnt recommend using it on an open fire though just fyi. The enamel coating is basically a powdered glass thats fused to the cast iron and intense pointed heat can cause it to break down, and unlike their naked cast iron, Lodge makes their enamelware in China and the enamel is a bit softer than the French stuff.

My dream is to find some old Staub or Le Crueset at a thrift store. I stare at the ones in Marshalls all the time, but even at that discount I cant afford them. I have one hand me down Le Crueset dutch oven thats older than me and its an absolute work horse.

I didn't even think about the coating on the fire, but kinda wondered what would happen. I use my other one on the gas stove all the time, but only to sear meat for stews etc. I guess if anything I'm stoked to have a beater. Now I need to make on of them Le Crueset's appear next, let's see if I can make it happen.

Actually you can use a Dutch Oven to make Pizza l in the woods. I love cast iron and its utilitarian ways. Not sure about coated kind but the usual, you stack coals on top and it makes an oven so pizza is doable! Though baking bread is also a great idea as I love bread. You can cook in it, bake in it... good stuff in my opinion :)

Yeah, the classic, uncoated cast iron is the way to go for back country cooking. Easy to clean the soot off too haha

The enameled stuff is awesome for in the house though, especially for acidic stuff. And i prefer it for baking, though I dont actually know why lol

I was just thinking about this and wondering if I should even be searing in the thing. What is the purpose of the enamel ? I want a raw cast one now that I think more about it. I talk all the crap about how much of my grinder I've smoked, but never thought about how much enamel I've eaten. ?

That's worth a tad bit more than the tag sale price, lol

I have a number of Kitchen Aid Streamline dutch ovens. What's great about them.....well 2 things.....they have the inside ceramic coating done in black...You look at those old Copco and other cast enamels and it's white....which does not last. In a true NY fell off the back of the truck moment..I was offered 4 brand new sets that consisted of a 3, and 4 and 6 gallon w/lids and two 4 gallon individuals in black. I had the money on me and took them all. :) I kept a red set for myself. They were not even on the market at the time..new product. Kitchen Aid was making a gambit and going against Le Creuset...they lost, but the pots might be better. They were made with that intention.
A blue 3 gallon.

Yall have a bunch of good finds! Been mostly thrifting for books these days - most valuable stuff seems elusive these days. Used to look mainly for old video games but that stuff has dried up bigtime. I'll have to keep an eye on kitchenware - definitely some kitchen upgrades I could use.
