What's On Your Mind?

Woke up in the middle of the night, switch on the TV...
and it's been a minute since I watched this crazy game...
Something called a Geelong Cat and some other random thing...

Oh mate don’t get me started . I love the game and played it as hard as I could until career took over . I actually wish you guys would give it a go because I’m sure once you understood the basic rules you’d love it . In fact I’m certain you would . My only fear would be if your African American athletes got hold of it they’d kick our ass at our own sport . Simply unacceptable .
It’s like anything though , you grow up loving what you know .
I’m a true sports fan so can watch basically most sports that require a decent level of skill .
I’d even consider watching ice hockey only the bloody puck moves that fast I have trouble following the tempo of the game . “ where the hell is the puck now ?”
I can watch NFL no prob , was a bit of a 49s fan back in the day . Rice and Montana days .
Watch these little gems . Think of it as our receivers and the ball being kicked and not passed by hand . These guys kick 50 meters to a player who can then ‘ receive it ‘

either because we are both SA
I meant the South African dude. You guys were talking enthusiastically and it was all gibberish to me. :)

I'm actually surprised you have any familiarity with curling since it's generally just a cold-country sport.
I was in an adult league starting at 10 and even worked at the local club, cleaning the ice between games and general maintenance. Curling is a great game to play.

Then I discovered booze and weed and girls and I was pushing 30 before I played again.

Dude, these guys are athletic AF. I hadn't remembered the skill level involved just in the passing game.

I used to watch Aussie rules football on the semi-regular, but it's been decades.
Back in the day, it was just about the craziest thing you could find on TV in the states.

Watching the vids, I'm picking up on the old "knee in the neck" trick of elevating! Must hurt like hell.
I found a saying that I like - "Soccer players pretend that they're hurt, Footy players pretend they aren't."

If Americans didn't invent it, we have a hard time accepting it. Hell, soccer has just boomed here sort of recently.
When I was in high school in the early 70s, I played on the first public school soccer team in my state.
We had to play the rich boy prep schools and the vaguely criminal military academies, as no one else had a team.

We had an Aussie curling team at the last Olympics and they actually went ok competing against the big guns . I can appreciate the skill involved . It’s not dissimilar in a loose way to lawn bowls in weighting the release with the correct power to carry just right .
Yeah I knew you meant the South African guy . I’m South Australian so we are both from SA ?

Mate the American woman's soccer team are stars and ranked number 1 in the world . I’m sure you already know that . They deserve big respect considering other national teams where soccer is like a religion . Brazil for instance .
Have a look at this . It nails your comment on soccer vs footy . I guarantee you’ll get a chuckle

^^Couldn't even finish watching. Those soccer pussies should be ashamed to look in the mirror. They make me furious.

OTOH, the more I learn about CTE, the less pleasure I get from watching the massive collisions. The first guy in the vid is completely limp even before his skull smashes into the turf.

You know that first guy actually came back onto the ground and finished the game . That was I think maybe 6-7 years ago . I remember watching it happen live .
That wouldn’t happen today .
If they even suspect brain trauma they’re off for screening and it’s a mandatory week off pending further tests .
You guys have kind of enlightened the world to how long term affects can impact a players welfare for life

What they've found in the brains of a bunch of NFL players and NHL enforcers after their early tragic deaths has put concussions and CTE among my top fears, especially since the effects might not manifest for many years.

Like many of us, I have recieved a fair number of concussive blows over my life. I always fear that concussions or my many exposures to things like asbestos have left a ticking time bomb inside me.

We call it "flopping" in the states, and it's even found it's way into our college basketball, where this year they've had to install a rule making it a technical foul if a player is deemed a "flopper." They don't call it very often, yet, but they will, and flopping must be eradicated from college hoops.

My college's football team employs an insanely fast paced offensive system, and in one game last year, the opposing team had 19 fake injuries in the second half of play alone - in an effort to slow our team down. Another penalty has been instituted for these "flops," and this year, teams didn't use the tactic.

Distressing how many of these CTE cases end violently, with the sufferer taking their own life way too often.
It's going to take a very high profile case of CTE to make people here in the US sit up and take notice.

For me it was wrestler Chris Benoit. He was a local guy who made it to the top, but his finishing move involved giving himself a concussion every match.
He was beloved in the industry. The show RAW was aired after they found the bodies of his wife, son, and him but before it was learned he had done it. The amount of grief and tears and disbelief in that show was heartfelt and shocking in its intensity.

The autopsy found his brain to be similar to that of a very elderly man with advanced dementia. "Cottage cheese" was used to describe his grey matter.

The idea of our body failing/betraying us is an awful one. When our brain does it, it's a horror I can barely contemplate.

You're a bit younger than I am, but this is something that the wife and I have had to discuss as we've moved into
our "golden years" - what to do if one of us develops dementia. Neither of us wants to be left alive if we do get it.
What would even be the point of continuing? Quality of life is much more important than quantity or length.

There are no truer words, my friend.

I watched someone very important to me slowly get eaten alive by that fucking cancer and when the end mercifully came I was so happy. I still had my grief to deal with, but at least their pain was finally over.

I'm here until I become a burden. Then I'm done.

I'm already a burden at 40, but it doesn't count if it's intentional right?
We all walk our own trail (or ride our rascals ).

Have you considered some of us being selfish and being burdened by you not being around ?
Nope. :)

I spent my life discharging responsibilities. I never shirked my duty. I did so successfully and now this is MY time. I owe nobody anything anymore and I get to be selfish and put ME first. I still consider others, but their concerns are waaay down the list.

If I don't get at least a hug at some point, I'm sending you weed chocolate infused with Ex-Lax so you're too stoned and old to make it to the toilet. Or "Wash Room" as "you people" call it LOL.
