Who loves fishing ?

Some years Bullsharks 8-10' long come all the way up the Potomac River from the Chesapeake Bay to the Washington DC Tidal Basin and as far up past Key Bridge but are stopped by the Falls...they have shark tours to go out and see them...a few dickheads drop cages in the water.

Apparently there was a Shark Attack in 1955 on Lake Michigan, but there's so many barriers in place I doubt any make it up this way now. I do have a nice pack of Eagle Claw Trokar Magnum HDs in 9/0, and I feel like that would hold a shark without being destroyed or bent LOL. For real these things are HEAVY. I could probably legit cast nothing but those Hooks and get a decent distance LOL. The cage thing.... Yeah not really my style, I'd rather catch one, or attempt to anyway. I'm not going to pretend that just because I'm aware of the gear I'd choose that I'd somehow manage to hold on and actually land it having never hooked into one before; I'm just guessing that my arms would be pretty beat up after, but it would sure be interesting LOL. Going from catching 10+ pound Catfish and Carp and Lake Trout, to a 400 pound + Shark? I can only guess at how quick I'd be like "OK grab the harness my AARP card is bruised" LOL. I'm only 39 but I feel like trying to land that would have me qualified afterward LOL.

Spent the afternoon catching more burbot (10 or so today). Kept a couple and just finished cleaning them. Got some beautiful meat brining right now.

Still lots and lots of ice. Break-up is going to be late around here this year, I'm thinking. I'll be a sad critter if the lakes are closed before the river opens up. Me without access to fishing is me grumpy. ; )

Might get out chasing burbot a time or two more, otherwise I'll see if I can find some big pike or walleye coming in shallow to get ready for the spawn. :punkrocker:

For me I'm waiting for my season to begin; The Suckers should be running pretty soon if they aren't already, and though I'm not super into catching those, Flatheads and Channel Cats ARE so, I'll be trying for a few at least since we aren't allowed to use Carp for Live Bait here. End of this month will be the (Hopefully) start of the Catfishing moving around more, which, I was surprised how early in the season some of them start getting active; about 3 years ago late March and early April were when I landed 3 Channel Cats all over 10 pounds and blew my mind a little; Always thought they stayed sleepy until early Summer, but, I was wrong!

Walleye are probably already being caught as they don't seem to mind really cold water, and I imagine if I had a boat I'd be able to take a crack at some Sturgeon and Musky since those too are cool water fish. But usually the first thing we start catching are the Suckers as they head up river to spawn. I don't like using Worms for bait; It's not JUST because I think they're gross, but you can't exactly target a species with those; Almost every fish will hit that bait, and i can probably just as easily catch Suckers with Corn.....If it was legal.... *Sigh* LOL.

The bite is back on but I can’t seem to run away from the crappie, this is like the 8th one over the pass two days.. not counting the ones I missed. I’m going for bass here! View attachment 109926
Cool to see you are getting out again after the winter. You eating those?
No crappies or bluegill around here, but I can finally tell them apart after watching ice fishing videos this winter.
smrt.jpg

Sounds like they are tasty.
Gotta take a trip some day for some warm water fish.

Bluegill, crappie, large and smallmouth bass are all still on the to-do list.

I have a strong feeling the flesh of the Burbot would be absolutely perfect for making Brodet ( Croatian tomato based fish soup ) here’s one I prepared earlier lol 181C8E6A-46E8-4404-9B62-3A20BCF80027.jpeg I know fish soup is probably not everyone’s deal but every time I’ve made it there’s a race to the bottom of the soup pot . Highly recommended with Ling being a prime target ingredient

I've never caught a Crappie myself, though they are popular in terms of people going after them. For myself personally I'd be using them as live bait cause Flatheads like them too but I'd have to at least try a Filet of one to see how they taste since I hear they're really good. Then again, I've yet to meet a fish I didn't like the flavor of, and I had Anchovies when I was like 10 and liked those too LOL. I just really like fish.

By the way, if you're going after Bass, if it's legal, that Crappie might be a little large for live bait for a Bass, but as Cut bait it'd be fine :)

the only Bass I catch are on accident (And boy let me tell you they are no where near as line shy as a Fluorocarbon brochure would have you thinking LOL) they normally hit my lines right on the bottom, and one day I remember I was aiming for Catfish, and kept catching Bass, so I was tossing the Bass back out, and kept catching them, so I ended up cutting one up and sticking it on the hook, and what do you think hit that and got reeled in? Another Bass.... haha.

I also had some Yellow Perch I was using for cut bait and my Fiance's cousin ended up nailing I think a Largemouth using that for bait too. Cut bait works on most species. Even Flathead Catfish will apparently take Cut bait in some situations, though you're way better off with lures or a live fish for those.

Bro that Soup looks SO good! You ever heard of "Fish Tea" ? They make it in Jamaica and it's a Fish Soup. Looks wonderful!

This is one of the larger Channel Catfish I've landed:

Nope , can’t say I’ve heard of Fish Tea but I’m sure I’d give it a go as I grew up eating just about everything especially seafood based .
That’s a solid Catfish . The ones we get ( saltwater ) have defensive spurs behind the gill plate and if your lucky enough to sample one are absolute agony .

There's a species of Saltwater Catfish in Florida but we don't get them up this far north sadly, but the main things to look out for with ours are the usual pectoral and dorsal fin spines. I've not had one stab me YET, but I know deep down that's really just a matter of time LOL. I've been scraped by a barb from an already dead Catfish and I know they're sharp, so I'm pretty careful when taking the hook out cause they are some straight ninja fish capable of flipping and spinning even on land. LOL Catfish are some of the only Freshwater species that will still try to fight you once they're on land haha.

My only time catfishing was years ago in Manitoba. I had no clue what I was doing, I just knew I was catching a bunch of new species(cats, drum, carp) and having fun.

I was shooting the shit with a local when I landed a small cat. I casually gripped it by hand, removed the hook, and released the fish. The local acted like I'd just dangled my balls in a piranha tank. "What are you doing?"
Me, confused "releasing the fish"
"You can't handle those things, you'll get stabbed!"

He explained about the little spike on the back of the gill plate, millimeters from where I'd gripped on the dozen or so catfish I'd already caught.

I didn't learn my lesson. I didn't have any gloves anyway, so didn't really have an option.
I probably caught between 20 and 30 cats on that trip and was fine handling all but one. He got me. Stabbed me in the index finger and even though it wasn't deep, it was months before it fully healed.

? I reckon I’d be a little upset a# well if you jammed a hook through my lips and dragged me by my head into a foreign state . May as well go down swinging

My Fiance's ex once had a Channel Cat that, after it was landed, he took the hook out and tossed it over to keep it, and when it landed, it hit the ground, flexed sideways, and came RIGHT back, and jammed a barb straight in his wrist or arm. Blood squirted and all. Like I said, I'm careful, but it's probably just a matter of time before I get a hammer attack haha.

LOL yeah I don't blame the Catfish; I LOVE them! They're not just my favorite species to catch, and eat, they're also my favorite species to keep as a pet; I've got 3 species I keep now, and to be Honest, there's times I simply let them go; Sometimes they're just too damned cute. Even when they're biting the shit out of me and trying to hammer a spike into me LOL! They're smart too; I've seen these things once the hook was out literally almost walk and wiggle back to the water to take off again haha.

Octopus will do exactly that . They are super intelligent and escape artists if removed from the water . If they get hold of you as well they’re not unlike a python . Very hard to remove ?
