Quality over quantity is the game with organics/soil. Like you...I just don't need those monster yields that sacrifice quality to pull in the Benjamins anymore. I never personally enjoyed all of that hydro fare but it offered enough trim that it started me on the hash smoking gig I've never really lost. I got lazy last year and went with the MC.....but like running sterile res's...it takes a lot of the fun out of growing and knowing. Did for me anyway. When I ran the UC system I set up a 15 gallon res of fresh water on a float valve and regularly used to go away for a week at a time and the UC would just churn the entire time. Good $$$$$$ but damn boring growing.

You use anything special/have favorites you use in your teas? Just EWC? I'm looking at the KIS site and their "compost Tea activator"....basically bone/fish/alfalfa meal and some other goodies....but always have just made do with EWC and a few additives. Kinda figure that with the size of both gardens it may be a worthy outlay of cash. I'm also working on my own soil mix...so am gonna grab a bit of stuff for that adventure as well. fuckin A...all this stayin home sure makes it easy to shop....LOL..... but it's only money.....and we're only here once......and maybe not that long.......so hey....go for it.

Should get my organic goodness in the next day or so. Compost tea activator, 95% humic powder, rock phosphate (for maters), oyster shell calcium. Ordered some VAM from Horticultural Alliance as well. Have been stockpiling my worm castings. Them little fuckers can sure shit. Worked on a bucket (32 gal) to brew in yesterday. Tried the little air pump....nah......just wasn't cutting it. Switched to the AP 100...overkill but everything I read says more is betta than too little on the bubble action...so i installed a valve inline for adj and gave it a go. Have a huge rock stuck in the bottom under the 8" disc diffuser and the fucker still wants to rise up a bit out of the water. LOL. Pushin a buncha air for sure. We'll see how it goes. Not perfect...just "stoner made". I'm sure many adjustments will arise along the way but it will work and I can hone it as I go. if need be.

Seeds are poppin' for the outdoor fun and more for the tent as well. Haven't used Rapid Rooters to pop seed before but a lot of folks do so I gave it a try. 3 days in...good germination....but I had to tear a few plugs apart and rearrange root/stems that came out incredibly curled. That kinda concerns me...we will see what they do. Hopefully the little bit of help I gave won't be detrimental. Never seen a stem grow a complete 360 degree loop before this though.....so the jury is still out on the Rapids vs. just using coffee filters and droppin those taps directly into the medium. Hmmmm.

Decided against doing any chuckin'. Gonna just run my BB plants out and enjoy the smoke. Still have a few seeds for later if I get the hankerin to play. Just no real need for a buncha seeds/to spend the time/effort/space makin it happen. Really excited to see what kinda rosin comes from these. (smacks lips)

Warmin up. Here we go......

Always love hearing the news from Funky Town.
Good reads. ???
I typically just drop the seeds into a coco peat mix I have.
Generally pretty good germ rates and works good for me.
I have seen alot of them do some weird twists and turns of the root stem.
Yes, some 360's. Lol.
I have one of my current seedling doing it now.
Last year I had a purple punch didn't do the curl and it's taproot went straight up, and the coty's went down. Lol.
Stupid plant. ???
When I recycle the soil and pull out the main root stem I've seen a number of them have a crazy twist or turn etc. I like examining how the root systems developed in different plants.
Never really noticed a difference between one plants health than another based on root shape though.

We use a couple large compost bins & I added a whole lot of red wiggler worms, the stuff at the bottom is nutrient rich, I use that, add kelp & molasses. I have a lot of aloe growing, plants seem to love it so I usually add some.

I add Dragonfly Earth Medicine sometimes, rock phosphate sometimes, Generally just make it up as I go. One of the few times I actually use my BlueLab PH pen. Worms, molasses, & kelp are an awesome combo.

I have burnt up a few air stones along the way. Worth getting a good one.

Every time I decide to try rapid rooters I go right back to soil for the same reason as you, I like to reposition the sprout sometimes. Old habits.

We have a Compostumbler. Thinking of getting another one....or two...LOL. Found it for $100 on Crazedlist. Between that and the worm bin we have no food garbage to get rid of whatsoever....and I'm getting some lovely EWC and compost in return. Haven't heard of Dragonfly.....will have to investigate.

I'm using an 8" air diffuser. It's a beast. Had a bunch of sintered air stones and still have a few but they don't put out the volume this disc does with that AP pump.

52 days into 12/12 on this run. Definitely a few in here that are ready for my tastes....so will likely do the deed in the next few. For flower I like my bud late...lotsa amber....for the rosin...it seems that a bit early makes the best/tastiest/lightest colored fare. I'm still learning though. Either way....a few of these are gonna be really nice/tasty. I don;t need seeds but I am thinking I might snag a few more packs of a few select offerings before these crosses go by the wayside.

The 4 "Morning Remedy" plants. Not a sloucher in the bunch. Crazy smells comin' off of these. Winner winner chicken dinner....

Interesting with your rosin assessment. I told you how much I was enjoying that outdoor BOO rosin. I usually prefer the later amber harvests too, that BOO I pulled early because of weather. Lightest, most yellow rosin ever. I didn’t expect it but loved it, especially daytime. I might have to play with that early harvest some more.

With the compost we more or less combined our worm bin with the compost bins. Trouble was we head south a few months of the year, worm bins did not survive our absence, even with neighbor help. One year I just dumped the whole bin in the compost bins when we left. That worked OK, the worms lived so that is my method right now.

But now we may not be traveling this year, the game changes again.

Some pretty girls you have going there, I do not recognize a single strain but they look great.

Clearwater Genetics @JL2G. Some nicely frosted plants in those packs for sure. Not all Mai Tai either. The fruitier fare seems to mix in with the PP/sunset sherbet well while the Deisel/GMO/Biscotti selections seem to hold their own and be more dominant in the mix. The Honey Biscuit (Mai Tai x biscotti) is very Chem dank kinda stuff. Not fruity at all. The Morning Remedy all smell like orange/orange spice/baby powder/and yes..punch...all mixed together. Far more depth for my palate than Chemmie fare...but that stuff is really nice too. I was surprised. Makes me a bit more excited for the Original Diesel and GMO offerings. Dunno why I bought those. (other than they were $30 for 13-15 seeds) ..LOL.....but maybe something will turn my head. If I re-up it'll be more MR and another fruit selection....

Once everyone going outside vegs up a bit they will get a shave....or two.....and when I do that...there are HUNDREDS of snips.....jus' sayin'....

Yeah @Baja.Beaches ......there sure are a lot of packs out there these days.....all derived from the same stuff.. Everything has such a long lineage these days it's tough to go back and be able to list all of the cultivars that make up one of today's "modern" strains. Morning Remedy is Mimosa x Mai Tai. Easier to just break it down to "Orange terps" than to list the incredibly long family history. I wonder how many times cannabis can be crossed? We are gonna find out, it seems.

Yes, some 360's. Lol.
I have one of my current seedling doing it now.
I was wondering about this myself. I use rooters and I'd say about 10% of the seeds do this curly thing. Sometimes I wonder if it's the orientation of the seed when it's planted. I typically try volcano side down, but not sure if it entirely works. I guess if I only get 10% to curl like that then it's a possibility?

On that note have any of you had a seed sprout just a stem, no cotyledons, nothing, looks like it's just a dead stump, about 1/2" above the rooter. Was like that for well over 2 weeks, then all of a sudden it sprouted a "real" leaf, just one. Still going.

I had one that did its coty's and the first set of leaves but with nothing in between. Stayed like that and finally died since there was no growth node. I kinda ignored it after a few months. lol. Prob why it died. lol

I had no clue WTF to do with these loop-d-loopers so I just buried the stem. Out of sight.....out of (my) mind.

All-in-all the Rapid Rooters did me well. It's more hands off than the paper towel method so I kept feeling like I needed to be taking another step er some such shit...LOL. Could just be this pop going well but there's more uniformity in this go than in the past few pops I've done. Those pops where some go off in a day and others wait a week...or never pop at all.....always piss me off.

Gulp...now i wanna pop more seeds....

Rollin' along here. Staying super busy. It's SPRING. Here's a buncha nothin to waste yer time with....

Up-potted everyone to 1 gallon containers yesterday. Will give those a few weeks then decide who is going in the big garden. Those selections will then get 2-3 weeks in 7 gallon velcro smarties for transplant into the 30's later. Should be well into tasting some of this latest wave by then to have a better idea of who to take forward with hope. Took the Morning Remedy's and one Island Dreamsickle down 2 nights ago....and the 2 Blueberry and 2 Beach Weddings got it last night. Found a few seeds on one of the BW so we will see if anyone else got the hit or not. Didn't notice it. Pretty sure it was Beach cus the Trop Coookies has the trait and I could see a few dried up sacs. (that I missed...oh well) As a result....Beach won't get a slot in the big garden. Ah...these well worked lines. Such is why I run the tent and try to take a look before I leap.

I've been playing with the Hanna pH soil tester/EC....and with the Bluelab pH/EC pens. Did a few random tests around the ranch.... in my wildflower bed...at a small wild (struggling) asparagus patch in the woods...and just below my veggie garden. Average soil pH.....8.2........ right in the same zone as the creek water which I've tested 3 times over the last 3 weeks. (7.9-8.2) My well water is even more alkaline at 8.7. My wildflower bed has about 250 ppm of nutrient....likely from a fertilizer application last Fall because I haven't fertilized it this year yet. The wild asparagus sample and the native soil below my garden are very fine sand/loam......with only 39ppm of something nutrient wise. I knew it was likely not the best soil/conditions but I didn't expect such a paltry showing. I did expect the high alkalinity.....it's the West.

So now the game begins to try to bring the pH down on more than one front and bring up the nutrient level on the wild 'gus. For years I was buying "dirt"...OF....Roots....this//that.... and using it for a pot grow or two then dumping it in the raised beds/in the garden rows/etc. Over time I've dug out most of the native soil and replaced it.....so while I don't expect such high/low numbers there... those tests are next on the list. I had a suspicion the ground was very alkaline. Now I know for sure where it sits. Kinda shows us we can (likely) do far better on the veggies and the weed as well. Will have to start pH'ing the irrigation water for the garden and dump some sulphur on the lawn/flowerbeds/fruit trees/etc. Time to retrain the Wife unit to the new plan......LOL. (they can be trained it's just a real motherfucker of a time to do it) Time to retrain Idiotboy as well.... heehee.

It's always somethin'....yup.

The other fun around here....or should I say upcoming fun.....is the purchase of 3 (already have 1) 100 watt solar panels, 3 12v pumps...and 4 MPPT controllers. Still need to get a line on some deep cycle batteries....but hope to get a few small systems set up so I don;t have to spend so much time behind the hose this Summer/in the upcoming years. Should cut my electrical usage quite a bit as all we do around here when it's this dry is water, water, water and watch it disappear.

You grow asparagus man? Now that takes patience. 2 years to harvest if I'm correct. Really loving the journal.

On rapid rooters, I love them now. Set it and forget it for the most part. However, I always cut mine to the center so that if the roots do flip or circle I can easily access it without hurting anything. It seems to happen quite frequently but it is an easy fix.

Your plants are beautiful. Some straight sticky fire in here. But you already know that right?

But the asparagus is a perpetual thing once you get it going. There were/are wild patches here.....but the long term drought we've seen has slowed them down. It was funny...one day when we first bought the place we noticed this old couple (we've since met) walking alongside the road...slowly...and we could tell they were searching for something. Come to find out...for years they'd targeted these patches and harvested the stalks. We've been carrying bucket to the patch from the creek but it's a losing proposition with the sandy soil/dryness/low humidity. Thus...it's time to intro some solar/drip action and give em some nutritional love.

We have a patch in a raised bed in the garden as well. There was a wild patch there...so we kinda built around that. However...most of what is in there are Home Depot boxes/etc. we grabbed and stuck in the ground. As a result...we've been eating asparagus for a couple weeks now. Have cucumbers fruiting in the dome....and carrots and tomatoes too......and lotsa starts for outside. (cucs/tomatoes/squash/celery/hot/sweet peppers..etc.) Beets/onions/garlic/carrots and some cabbages in ground outside now. Everything else is in wait. Still too cold at night. Those warm days sure tempt us...but we've learned to not jump the gun...outside anyway. A few of the tomatoes we (always...LOL) started too early are getting huge already. I think those will get slammed in 25 gal pots cus they will be too large for the existing holes...maybe. Everything is always in flux and that's the fun of it.

Thanks for the compliment on the garden....but honestly...I just water and watch and do what I've always done. Some of the genetics just tick all of the boxes so it's pretty easy to put the basics together and have success....especially indoors. In all reality...I'm a very lazy/casual cannabis gardener these days. I did my time. LOL.

In the indoor garden: Seeing the "Tiki Torch" (Original Diesel x Mai Tai) fattening up/frosting up.....so I was right...these and the GMO will (did here) take a bit longer than some of the others to shine/finish up. Mashing a little bud in my fingers....these are gonna lean Diesel....and look like they will yield the most of any Mai Tai cross I've grown so far. I say all of this because I had mentioned earlier that there weren't frosting up like the rest. Um.....wrong. My wife rarely comments but she said "Wow" every time I brought out an MT cross to harvest. I'll get some pics of the rest when I'm ready to harvest 'em.

How did the pens compare? I would like a soil PH pen someday, too bad they are so costly. Which do you prefer?

8.2 is pretty dang alkaline. One of the reasons I recycle my soil & grow in pots is my soil is super alkaline clay. Nasty stuff.

Solar…big fan here. Our house is grid tied but we produce more power than we use, a small kick back from the utility company.

OTOH, the Baja beach hut is 100% off grid power with Trojan L-16 batteries. 8 250 watt panels. The dish is my screaming satellite internet, why I don’t check in much when I am there.

I like the plan with 12v pumps.

Wild asparagus? Jesus. Man, I dream of having a setup like yours. I'd eventually love to be self sustaining. Me and my boyfriend both want to do it in the next couple of years so know I aspire to be the lazy home gardener ?.

You did guerilla grows originally right? Before legalization hit anyway. You prefer outdoor to indoor?

Seems your wife and I have a similar scent issue. I can appreciate that it smells amazing but damnit man, I can't pick a specific scent out most of the tine to save my life. Drives mine crazy because his bud is fire but I'm so focused on trying to associate it with a particular scent I guess my face doesn't look impressed but honestly, I think it looks more like constipation ?. I love those gassy strains though for real.

Dizzamm....I envy that Baja gig. Never been down that way but can imagine how sweet it must be.

The pens are all different offerings. I bought the Bluelab Grower's box reasonably...so got the typical pH pen and TDS/PPM pen first....not really thinking ahead for outdoors/the garden/etc. ...just thinking about watering up the indoor ganja from the well or the creek.....both of which I figured were highly alkaline. cus i know you guys know this shit...the creek was 140ppm last check...so not too bad considering I live 6,000 ft below the top of the 13K peak and there are a shit ton of rock layers/influencing factors between here/there. (5 miles, maybe)

Then I fucked up and bought the soil EC pen before I got the Soil pH pen I originally intended to buy. LOL. Fuckin old people. And hey..it's only money. I could be gone tomorrow. fuck it anyway. Wife says 'Don't worry about it"...so I don't. Anyways...What I've learned since buying all of these is that I could have bought the Soil pH pen and used it to take water readings rather than buying the Bluelab. And the Bluelab PPM meter...well...i will use it here/there...but with organics and soil...I don;t tend to over fertilize/ worry about such things/haven't taken ppm readings in a decade. The Soil EC is a stainless steel probe...not a glass tip like the BL pH pen and the (pointed) tip of the Soil pH pen. Both of the Soil pens also require you to douche the soil sample with de-ionized water before taking readings.....so they are just a bit different animals than the hydro-type pens overall.

I did a few guerilla grows in the 80's but the majority of my time was all indoors (25+ years) ...mostly in an illegal market. I didn't take it outdoors here in CO until i moved South/bought property here 7 years ago in the Banana Belt :ROFLMAO:. Just started indoor again last winter......

The wife will be thrilled when I take down the Diesel cross. that shit always sends her into allergy mode... heehee... You would like this Tiki torch cross if you like gas/sour stank. Not really been my thing of late but I'll smoke it anyway i'm sure...heehee.....

Do you think you will use those soil ph pens much?

I have the Blue Lab Grower’s Box too but don’t use it a lot, the PH pen I use on my teas & if I do clones, the TDS I have used twice. With my recycled soil mixes I did slurries a couple times but tend to ignore results if they are different from my own assessment. Old habits.

You are lucky to have a wife that is onboard. Mine helps but does not participate more than a few times a year. She still encourages my hobbies tho which is great.

On those solar 12 volt pumps, it would be hard to beat 2 6v golf cart batteries, best bang for the buck for sure. I got 9 years out of a bank of Sam’s Club golf cart batteries.
