Back in the old days I build vivariums. Had Eastern U.S green tree frogs who laid eggs. Another from the same area green smooth skin snakes who also laid eggs and had a dozen babies. Too many aquariums to count and raised more tropical fish then I could ever count.

Today I feed wild blue belly lizards meal worms, sometimes by hand and talk to them outside. The only fish I keep are for eating mosquito larvae in a 13 gallon half wine barrel. I once told a reporter I like to have a slice of nature in my home but today i can enjoy it in basically the wild.

I get it why you scaled down things . It’s a lot of work and unless your kind of fanatical it can become a chore .
I remember when my white lip tree frogs laid eggs in our tank water and we ended up with a couple hundred tadpoles in a kiddie pool I set up with temp probe in my shed to sell them back to the pet shop .
Man did I bite off way more than I bargained for . Feeding dozens of baby tree frogs was just epic ?‍♂️.
I ended up selling a few but reward for effort was a major imbalance .
I’d really love to have an albino carpet python but I work away alot so I don’t think I’d burden my wife with any more exotic pets .
She has challenge enough looking after me

In no particular order:

Sailing- Everything from 7 ft Sabots to 14 ft Lidos to 48 ft weekenders. Family had a 20 ft, hand-crank keel Ensenada but I learned most of my shit in Newport Sea Scouts Del Mar ship 711. Haven't sailed since 2007. Got my first reliable weed hookup in sea scouts, which was the opposite of what my dad was seeking to accomplish.

Mountain biking- Rode Mt Tam, Mammoth, and various other NorCal locations from '93-'99. Just do a little flat-land off-road now because it hurts too much.

Camping- preferably desert camping or amongst the giant redwoods. Used to do an annual Last Chance Canyon trip in Mojave to help decimate the jack rabbit population. My uncle Mitch used to bring a small arsenal along... and like 5,000 rounds of ammo... good times. RIP Old man Bickel.

I collect books. Not anymore, but I did. At one point, right after my grandfather passed, I had around 6-7,000 books. I've reduced the pile to around 500 now.

Counterfeiting- I've always been fascinated with the art of counterfeit, whether money, art, or fashion. My interests tend to sway towards money though, and I love the story of Arthur J Williams jr. Art next and fashion less so.

Stalking- Not necessarily in a nefarious fashion but rather as a game. A series of mental exercises. I pretty much stopped after Pauley Perrette asked twitter to hunt down Jackson Holbrook from the WBC God Hates Fags picture. I probably would have made a decent skip tracer. I love Google's Geoguessr game.

Somewhat related to that: Infosec, cryptology, and human behavior in general.

I love Datsun 240z's and 510's and VW Notchbacks and have had a few over the years that I've restored and/or destroyed.

I've not done much along the lines of anything hobby-ish for a while as taking care of aging parents is taking up the core of our time now and limits what we are able to do recreationally.

That’s a diverse and interesting line up of past experiences and interests you have .
Camping is huge on my list as well . I love beach camping mainly because then I can fish as well and the sound of waves crashing the shore both to fall asleep to and wake up with is pretty special .
Human behaviour is an interesting one . My son just finished his degree in clinical
Psychology and the conversations we’ve had with how the mind works being all chemical reactions to emotional states is pretty fascinating. He’s like well I can pretty well tell you chemically what’s going on in your body when you get angry , sad, happy , etc but it’ll kind of dehumanise it a lot .
Some things I probably don’t need to know but it is still pretty interesting ?

I probably miss camping the most right now. Right after I got married in 2003, we were running up to Yosemite or nearby with the kids just about every weekend.

I'm not sure how long I've been interested in HB/psychology. In 10th grade, when I moved back to Iowa from Cali, I took a Psychology elective. The class before that was American History and in between we had a 10 minute break.
I live a baseball diamond away from the school so me and a couple friends would dodge out and run to my place to smoke a bowl. My grade in psychology went from a disinterested "D" the first quarter to a stoned and very interested "B+" the second quarter.

My teacher for both classes was the same and she had just visited her daughter in San Francisco prior to the school year starting and was extremely interested in the "punk rockers" she saw there.
Being that I had just left the OC hardcore scene with my shaved head, bondage pants and 1.5 in Creepers, I was on her radar immediately.
She could never quite figure out the grade jump and I'm sure I left her with more questions than answers but from that point I've always had a pretty deep interest in why people do.

Anyone keep bees or have tried it ? Apparently the bees supplied with these kits are not super aggressive like the import African bee . I’ve been thinking about it for awhile but being allergic to bees obviously there’s apprehension.
It’s a great Aussie invention these flow hives so extracting the honey is now as simple as turning a tap which alters the octagon shaped holding points allowing the honey to simply drain down . View attachment 95506
been wanting to get into bee keeping - do you have to buy the females ?- thinking on butting a hive on my deck - how much area does one need so not to mess with the bee's ?

I can only go by my mate who just set one up . Yes he did have to buy a Queen Bee to kickstart the hive . He bought the kit to set up initially and then the same suppliers sent him the worker bees and a Queen .
I’m not sure how they were delivered but they’re a kind of passive variety but as someone already noted , every bee hive has a bad day and he found out th3 other day when he had to sprint through his backyard being chased by the angry mob .
I thought it was hilarious because he’s a big dude and doesn’t move that quick until that day ?

Oh yeah I’ll add it’s probably a good idea to have a reasonable clearance radius around the hive of at least 20 meters from what I could tell although I’m no expert . Just so if they are having an off day you don’t become a target

After seeing this pop up...i thought of other hobbies.

I retired 2 years ago at the age of 53 and this year i have access to my pension...so time is on my side..i almost went back to work but...well

I cook. And I mean like every day I think...how can I amaze the taste buds of the people I love. My wife ...before she was my wife was head chef at home and she is always pleased...and grateful that I took that away...(she makes 2 things i suck at...and every now and then you have to do that, She cooks a roast beef to die for and she makes me eggs when my blood sugar is making me hangry)

Oh i love to cook..food is my art. My son is a head chef at a good restaraunt...because i have always loved to cook..and experience and knowledge is everything.

I come from Julia Child showing me how to cook...to now...the food network BLOWS...watch that Martha Stewart series if you want to learn to cook...and for the record..a martha..serena sandwhich...no i am married..:SLAP:

I work on cars and i cook...but I love to cook and create...and nail shit.. My wife used to get upset she was gaining weight but i like a bit of comfort. :D

FOOD...the greatest gift we have...and then WEED....the combination is most superlative.

I like the bit where you retired at 53 . Jeez if only ………….
My father retired at 55 and got 31 years of retirement.
What’s the secret . A solid financial plan with a high paying job ?
An inheritance of decent proportion ?
Rob a bank ?
Send the wife to work full time ?
All the above ?

I was dating this woman...her dad said hey they are hiring...and i dropped out of high school for that job that paid twice min wage.

a lot of time passed and then Y2K....who knows it all..in our operations.. ME

I just made sure i did it....when i got the chance i took the software manuals home and learned how their software worked...i know puters eh....

And then I said this and this...and then you must be on our go live team

And i retired at 35 years in..started at 17 slugging boxes because my home life was born again christian and i did not abide..

And regrets man...NOPE...3 wives later.....but ...1 regret...1 cancer...and now i live in this weird quasi universe where i found the woman of my dreams and both of us argue because we are each unworthy....

:D

Life is better than the alternative..seize the day man...every fucking day!!!!

Amateur astronomer here. I have an assortment of mounts, optical equipment and cameras. I could build a small house if I sold my collections of telescopes... I carry a 6 handicap in golf (yes I play the ball down). I have a permanent camp spot with a pontoon boat for fishing a golf cart ride away from my camper in a boat slip. I shoot trap, compete with a couple friends in fast draw pistol and shoot steel out to 800 yards. And of course I try to grow the ickiest of the stickiest. Picture of the Andromeda galaxy I took over about an hour of exposures.

I am very baked at the moment..but that job..bought 2 houses...and 3 wives...paid for 3 kids...man.

But at first it was hard lifting...my 2nd day i had to lift 60,000 pounds in 50 pound boxes....The most i did in one day was 100,000 pounds. I did that for a decade :D

And i lifted a measurable 100,000 pounds with my hands in an 8 hour shift...FOR REAL

So if i think people are pussys...it is because they are.

I can flick a marble from my fingers that can take out Vlad Putin from 100 feet...let me know if you need to engage the Stone Stoned Killa

And THEN...i would go hit a gym after 10 years.....a friend said you should work out...and i took my penchant for the ridiclous and parlayed that into working out...it is why my hands are so big...and i can teach my son how to pursue any sport...i can train you.

It was my life for 15 years...4 days on 1 off..eat right. my hands are 2 x 4 inches for a reason....and i trained with Mr O competetors..spotted..we did reps...like the real deal...had a couple of offers for pro wrestling..but i have a brain and such.

:D

Ok time to drop a boomer ....and enjoy the outdoors...Happy Easter ....If was high...and now i shall elevate..

Sorry for the rambling...not sorry :D lol

Trust me I’m no stranger to manual labour either . I was the youngest tuna poler in the entire fishing fleet at 15 years of age . Because of my size I could deal with it . :D But now i might want to land that 900 pounder... I will get someone to send me the pic of my grandfather in front of a 1500 pound blue fin they landed in the 40s.... :D

You want to challenge yourself against an absolute powerhouse of a fish then you know .
These things are virtually freight trains of the Ocean . Pelagic hunters that mow down anything in their path with sheer dynamic speed .
Compared to most other fish these guys are the Formula Ones of the sea along with Sailfish and Short finned Mako,s
I miss the adrenaline and rush of steaming headlong into a school of Tuna knowing when the action starts it’s battle stations .
It’s an era know long gone as Tuna farming is now in its place .
I hate to say this as most are a product of their time but the guys involved in the industry today wouldn’t have a clue about comradeship and sheer hard work .
Half of them don’t even show up for work leaving the shore bosses ringing around looking for crew .
It’s sad but I’m glad I’m no longer involved .
