What's the song if you don't mind me asking? There's a spitting knowledge joke here somewhere but I'm too stoney to put the pieces together...

And yeah, he was a crazy dude. Absolutely brutal when he was in power.
Lol i don’t know if that was their intention and it’s a Chicago Drill song so not exactly the most knowledgeable ?

I just listened to the flow, rather than the lyrics and really enjoyed that. ^^^

I know bugger all about rap in the 2000s, (I still listen to Cube and T and Wu-Tang and Booya Tribe and all that grandpa rap:ROFLMAO: ) but that was cool.
Yes that’s what really got me hooked was how they flowed on the beat and then certain lyrics caught my attention lol. I didn’t really start listening to rap, outside of what family played/radio, until I started smoking weed.

Do you like other drill? Hilariously enough I am a bit into drill. I like Young Pappy, Lud foe, just a bunch of random dudes. I like jt cause it's like punk rock, homemade and raw for the most part.

Edit: my last Instagram video features Bang Da Hitta lmao

Is rap getting all fragmented like metal?
Metal, hair metal, death metal, nu-metal, thrash, black metal, etc, et bloody cetera. I lost track of that shit in the late 80's .

I know of mumble rap, but that's about the only sub-genre I can name.
No, not in the way you're describing. Drill Rap is purely a Chicago sound, kind of like Chopped and Screwed music was a Houston sound. Its much more regional than anything else as far as subgenre's go.

Thanks, Dino. Much appreciated

I recognize the name Chopped and Screwed from the famous Mac Lethal video. I guess I had an awareness of the existence of various regional sounds from that. I appreciate you clearing up the big picture.

Which is hilarious because this is where my hip hop knowledge stops. I just know what I've found out myself going down youtube rabbit holes and reading comments lol. I really dont know shit EXCEPT what I just said hahah. But yeah, lets take black metal, while it was a big phenomenon that came out of Norway specifically, it turned worldwide and now you can go to almost any country and hear a black metal band from there (there is a great doc about heavy metal musicians in the middle east, cant remember the name unfortunatly), but hip hop still seems to try and blow up city by city, like they all have different unique styles theyr'e trying to make popular. Or something like that.

Which to me is way cooler than setting out to be a 'black metal' band or a" 3rd wave ska" band or whatever. Just create what makes you happy, and if someone else likes it, even better.

I know that may not be the recipe for financial success, but it is where most great art comes from, imo.

the problem is, great art isnt palatable to the masses. Great art provokes ones mind and makes you think outside of ways you normally would, and the average person cant handle that kind of introspection. Thats why all we get is mediocre art.

I'm with you on the rest, but I completely disagree with your last statement.

Great art has always been around, but you've always had to seek it. You'll almost never find it at the top of the charts or making big box office, for the reasons you mention.

I booked music for a small "alternative" club in the mid-nineties. Ever since then I've said that for every band that made it, there were at least a thousand more that were as good or better that will never get a sniff at success.

Sadly, talent doesn't guarantee anything, but true artists will continue to create anyway. The ones I've met are driven by a force inside them, not by dreams of money and tail.

okay what I meant was, great art is never truly appreciated by the masses, not that it isnt created. The top 50 radio stations are gonna stick to the money making formula, not feature somebody with a message on how to change the system.

I believe we are both on the same page of this, im just not great at wording it.

When it comes to Chicago I mainly listen to FBG Duck, sad cause i started listening to him shortly before he was killed. I think what draws people to Chicago Drill is its Authenticity and the Violence. So many Chicago Drill Artist are dead or locked up. I like a couple NY Drill artist but most of em locked up smh

Nah it’s more regionally than anything. Different area has different sounds/lingo. A rapper from Dc will sound completely different from a rapper from Florida and that Florida rapper won’t sound anything like a Rapper from Louisiana or California. Mumble rap aka too drugged up to speak properly luckily that’s not as popular anymore.

It’s not the masses lmao it’s the Label Companies. Okay a certain demographic ◽️ do hold a certain control due to what they think is popular but i’m not about to get into that on here. Record labels push artist on streaming platforms and youtube and put enough guns or jewelry in a video and you’re viral and can have a deal quick. It’s hard to appreciate someone you don’t know exist.

I remember being in middle school and people were turning their noses at any mention of Rap and how much certain folks parents absolutely hated it and wouldn’t let them play it. It’s was all Pop, Alternative, Heavy Metal, and old shit. Now those some parents are rapping Lil Baby, Lil Durk, and Roddy Rich. It’s weird.
