These were in starters for too long. They suffered for that. They would have benefited from quarts.

Roots are like horses, you give them new space and they run the perimeter.
I am not usually a retail kind of guy, but I really do enjoy my taper bottom pots for veg. Uppotting is a breeze , because I can just drop it into the new medium.
I find fabric or flexible pots cumbersome for transplanting.

I guess that is another benefit to these tapered pots : you can just pop them in and out to check, anytime.
It's all realtime or hindsight, really, if they start circling it's time to up.
I just keep an eye on the bottom. Even a week or two. When the roots poke out, it's time for the next sleeve.
I was lazy on these ones, they went directly from starter cups to gallons.

I have trouble giving strong drink to minors. It is like a fake ID. I put them in bigger pots so I can start feeding them like big boys.
I believe there is a science and a benefit in timing the development of roots OR shoots.
That is 2 say, that during a specific time window it is possible to focus ( amend? supplement ?,manipulate ?,hormones ?auxins?) root development. Just as there is an appropriate window ( and corresponding regimen ?) to focus on canopy production.
I will just throw out a bunch of vocabulary words. Hopefully, someone smarter than myself will reconstrue them in a sensicle manner.
Cup
quart
gallon
4 gallon
I have been doing this for less than a year ; but that seems like the pattern I have fallen into. As you can see, I got lazy and skip the quart sometimes.
Did I answer the question ?
Was there a question? I mostly just like stopping in, and talking about the weed.
