Thanks man, I appreciate that! I was looking at getting new shells, drilling them myself, and decided the cost of doing that just isnt worth the whole "i did the WHOLE THING by myself" factor, lol. I'll just strip pre drilled ones down and call it good. That aint even the fun part anyways.Awesome! I love your DIY mindset, Dino.
Using something you made with your own hands is so incredibly satisfying.
Looking forward to seeing the results (and happy you and your drums aren't my neighbor).
People always go too far with that kind of thing and lose sight of the point. Instead of having fun it becomes about reaching some artificial goal that has no actual significance.just isnt worth the whole "i did the WHOLE THING by myself" factor
I agree, your example goes crazy hard in that regard. Seems more like they're "doing it for the likes" than something that Is an actual passion projectPeople always go too far with that kind of thing and lose sight of the point. I remember reading about someone who decided to make a sandwich from scratch. They spent a ridiculous amount of time growing wheat to make the bread, and raising vegetables, and IIRC they may have raised something for the meat. Made the butter and every damn thing.
They ate the sandwich, it wasn't anything special.
It's been a while and I never spent a lot of time on the story, but IIRC, it started as a quest for the perfect sandwich or to show how organic growing was so much superior to other methods.I agree, your example goes crazy hard in that regard. Would only be a valid study, IMO, if dude didn't eat until his 'Purity Sandwich' was ready. ?It's been a while and I never spent a lot of time on the story, but IIRC, it started as a quest for the perfect sandwich or to show how organic growing was so much superior to other methods.
Here's your competitionStarted refinishing some old cheap ass drums the other day. Figured this would scratch my itch to DIY my next kit, without the cost of buying all new everything. What you're seeing in the last pic is the first wet coat of spar urethane. It has since been sanded and reapplied. I might do it once more after this round dries but it's looking pretty nice. I ordered new pink and purple Remo heads to replace the old shitty ones, and am playing around with anodizing the hardware in the future if I can find a good rate on aluminum stuff.
The whole kit will be wildly ugly. Next Tom is gonna be kinda shimmery gold with green heads, floor Tom will be bluish with red heads, bass drum no idea yet. Maybe tie dye or something hideous.
This is my first time staining wood like this and I'm not horribly offended by the results so far. That finger print smudge is just on tape that will be removed, no worries. View attachment 150927 View attachment 150928 View attachment 150929 View attachment 150930

Are you doing zildjians or sabians? I’m not a drummer but I’ve noticed a difference back in the days when I was playing guitar. And I totally relate I gotta get back into playing. Just so much shit competing for my time so I haven’t been able to get back into it. I loved it and it was so therapeuticCheers from another stick twirler from back in the day...2015 last I saw or played mine, they're in cases packed away. I got back into music in 2011 after taking 20 years off. I soon realized nothing had changed in those years. The egos, no shows, the absolute crap pay and all the general bs that comes with dealing with others & bar owners especially made me decide to pack em up until I feel like playing or maybe never again.
This be them, excuse the crappy pic

Damn that is a beautiful kit, I always really liked gretsch, those wood rims look so slick. Bet it sounds gorgeous too. I'm similair in the way that I've played for more than half my life, off and on, at times seeming like I'll never pick it up again. A new opportunity to play music kinda just fell into my lap and it's helping some younger guys start thier first band so it's been a ton of fun just sitting back and just letting them done what they wanna do and just keeping beat for them.Cheers from another stick twirler from back in the day...2015 last I saw or played mine, they're in cases packed away.
