-5C right now and supposed to reach freezing around lunch time. I may slip down to the river this afternoon, but I may just stay home and drink tea in the warmth.

This time of year, with the ice constantly jamming up and then breaking free, it's a crapshoot on whether my spots will be fishable anyway. Soon though, I will be back on the water. :)

Found a little open water, but didn't find the fish. Still great to wet a line though. I also managed to wreck my throat a little yelling at some moronic kids to get off the ice. They were on the other side and wandered probably 80 yards off shore before I hollered. Fuckin' idiots' corpses would have ended up somewhere in Saskatchewan if they'd gone through.

I couldn’t leave everyone with just the image of a hole in the ice so luckily enough I went fishing today with wifey and can provide a little more visual affect . On current form looks like you’ll be visiting my backyard first ? 776B920E-9D62-4F0A-8FEA-88BB18B0D7F4.jpeg 206AB4AD-526D-48F6-8DDC-367DFBB908FC.jpeg E703003B-2D39-4334-A602-936E85D611BD.jpeg 99BE4EC9-D5CE-4931-B3B2-CF78886ED400.jpeg C5420D5A-9EA1-4102-B304-871FCEF86B78.jpeg

My early teen years was all about TNN's Saturday morning line up. Bill Dance, Roland Martin, Orlando, Hank Parker, Bassmasters and in fisherman. Miss them old shows.

I have taken quite a break from fishing but I've been getting the itch again. Just can't do catch and release anymore. My inner Buddha won't allow it but I plan on fishing for meat.

I had moment in my early 20s when I was reeling in a fish and it swallow the hook and I probably killed the sob when I removed it. Was stoned and it hit me "bro how the fuck would you like it if some giant reeled your ass in only to rip your lungs out for fun" Kind of fucked me up for some reason. Since then I only catch what I plan on cleaning and eat.

I know, bleeding heart hippie but man empathy is a bitch, lol.

Im ok with catching fish to eat so that's the plan. A lot of trout, perch and crappie. But man when a 5lbs plus largemouth jumps out of the water to snag that top water plug it is money! I do miss that.

But man that quiet body of water and solitude is needed more now in this post covid world than ever before. Plus if you're gonna eat meat you should get your hands dirty so you respect the sacrifice more thoroughly.

For you fresh water guys, y'all ever fucked with these little tough guy jigs.

I found them at Walmart in mid 90s and probably caught more lunker bass and crappies from these than any other artificial baits.

Hell I've caught large/smallmouth bass, walleye, crappie, catfish, drum and perch with these bad boys.

Found the white ones worked best in my area due to the murky waters. Usually on 4 or 6 pound test monofilament line. Screenshot_20210325-192307_Chrome.jpg

One of the most effective walleye crankbaits I ever used was a WallyWorld cheapie. They were around $5 each when the rapala's were over twice that. It was a deep diver with glowing eyes and a really nice action. I still have half a dozen kicking around. The hawgs would come off bottom or out of the pencil reeds and slam them hard.

I have a box of expensive cranks that rarely get used because they cost too much to lose. Yeah, I know it's stupid. :) /shrug

Every Rapala I bought ended up in a god damn tree or bush I thought i could cast up under. At least $50+ dollars worth. I think they were $6 back in late 90s.

Crankbaits just take up so much space, and are so specialized for depths, in addition to the ridiculous prices($10-15 CAD for most, last I checked). I can probably take the same money and fill a tackle box with three times as many spoons and jigs and inline spinners in the same space, and be able to confidently cover a lot more situations.

There's something like 19 species of game fish in the province and I've caught all but the Golden Trout. I fish waters that have many different species and will often target different ones in a single outing. I have a stupid amount of gear at home, but given that I either fish from a canoe or walk streams most of the time, I need maximum utility from everything I bring along. I have friends that have large craft, with room for 3 or 4 suitcase sized tackle boxes, but that's not my style. Given all that, I rarely have more than 2 or 3 cranks along with me.

Oh yeah! Watching pro fishermen on TV with several boxes of nothing but crank baits in their $60,000 master craft or ranger boats, lol.

Like you I'm a bare minimum fisherman so I'll take a backpack with a random collection of spinners, jigs, hook/sinkers and plastic worms/grubs.

I used to dream of being on the bass master professional tour! Winning a brand new Ford or Chevy truck and a ranger boat on top of that 6 figure check!
I had a buddy that fished some of the Walleye Trail tournaments for a few years and that shit is hard work for very little return for the vast majority of tourny guys.
Of course, like anything thing that involves significant money, there's always guys looking to cut corners if not outright cheat.
Plus there's chasing and kissing sponsor ass so you can afford to keep up with the pack.

To each his own, but I heard some form of the the saying "never make your pleasure into work" when I was young and it resonated with me.
I fish purely for pleasure. If I wake up on the day of a planned trip and the rain is blowing sideways, I can roll over and go back to sleep. I don't have to head out into the gale since I already paid my entry fee. :)

There's nothing wrong with Either Way...
It's just about the time on the water.....
