my "bush" peas have already scaled the 4' fence............this is why I got "bush peas, lol....precious few peas on there so far..and they look like snaps not shell peas....somebody at Burpee passed the doob in the wrong direction I think...but I'll eat whatever they make... just sucks I'm the last to know, lololol

Not a single pole bean planted in the soil has made it, no sunflowers either.........that spells rabbits......but I have separate 10g's for pole beans....they don't eat them cause they can't scale the pot...........only way I get any. Both plants, once they get to 1'.....they leave them alone.
what was that bean for cover crops? i almost got turtle beans but thats not it...black eyed peas?

We would stop at roadside stands going to the mountains and get bags of fresh boiled peanuts and fried pork skins. Stinkinest shit you have ever smelled in your life but OMG delicious.

Haven't seen one set up in years though.

i am not sure they grow here....its pretty wild and man...i really want to try boiled peanuts...never had em but i have seen them on the food network.

I am in a most southerly region (1 hour from Buffalo or so) of Canada.
They take like 120 days or something. I considered using them for a cover crop when I first did my 3x3 indoor bed but went with wood chips instead.

If you need a better cover try black eye peas.....you cut the crop when it flowers about 4-6 weeks...I plant them in the garlic beds twice after harvesting before replanting garlic in November. It's all that feeds them. Figure the cost of fertilizer for 4-500 heads of garlic is about $1 using them. I have been doing this for years, it works great and black eyed peas with smoked turkey necks is fairly awesome too.

For me, I don't think cover crops are the best idea actually.

It's hard to justify turning the light on indoors to get the crop proper before doing a chop and drop and I just don't think underdeveloped plants struggling for light are the best kind of biodiversity to add.

Outdoors I don't get 100 frost free days so similar deal, there's not enough time to establish the cover and pull a harvest of whatever. I would be doing more of a rotational thing there, this was planned for this year with some purple barley but if I don't get it in the ground it won't work lol.

The wood chips are a byproduct of me doing fire mitigation and develop a nice fungal mass.

So my eldest wanted to help plant out veggie seeds for spring/summer
We planted more broccoli, cauliflower, spinach (or popeye as I tell the kids, great way to get them to eat it) chives, red onion, turnip, parsnip, leeks, spring onion, and a few others I can't recall

Lettuce hack came up a treat. Gives me an idea to try a couple of cannabis plants with this method. I'll darken out the pots but worth a try, semi hydroponic, wick, organic fusion
I'll give it a go

We're always encouraging the wee folks to plant foods!
Our grandkids eat lots of stuff we ferment and can , but gettin em to grow stuff is hard.
Oh for the labor of it! Lol.
I want them to be able to feed themselves without having to think about it. My eldest helps me make daddy's natural fertilizer. Labs and fpj, ffj, worm teas etc. Even get the others to help direct seed peas beans etc after dad has set up the rows. Onya skunky, it's our job to teach and pass down. Kids are into recycling and my macgyver pots. Want them thinking outside the square all the time.
