Starts are going out for the year. For anyone who doesnt know, 3rd year gardener here. 400sq ft of outdoor soil surface in raised beds and mounded rows in my back yard.

Brassicas that got hardened off and are outside for their first night out.

Did 48 cultivars of tomatoes last year, did a big pheno hunt so to speak, and ruled out a bunch of tomatoes I wouldnt grow again. Some will get a second shot, but in some areas a clear winner has been found for now. If you want to know which weve tried, Id be happy to tell you. Last year was about variety, this year is about production and storage. Ill be doing 2x 16' rows and 2x 4' x 8' beds staggered early season and late season plantings, which is the same as I did last year.

48 cultivars? Holy shit I been growing tomatoes 35 years and never started that many, lol. That is a bunch of packs!
I had just about 100 plants last year......maybe 6 cultivars. There will be more this year, plant's not cultivars.
Post what you found was good out of those 48, please.

Black Brandywine and German Johnson both were our preferred beefsteak varieties last year out of all that we grew. Ill have to see if my seed list is up to date and I can verify.

As I said Chocolate Cherries and Sweetie were our preferred cherry tomatoes of the 7 or so varieties weve grown in the past 3 years.

Wild Boar Farms
Lucid Gem - handled the heat, tastes like a melon married with a tomato. Delicious bicolor.

Cosmic Eclipse - didnt grow well in 2 different soil beds. Never had a quality enough specimen to say I gave it a fair shake. Running ir again.

Blue Gold Berries - solid and beautiful cherry, less acidic then the Atomics, less tomatoey than the Chocolate Cherries, less fruity than the slicer, Lucid Gem.

Brad's Atomic Grape - beautiful, good acidic tomato flavor.

Black Beauty - stand out flavor years ago but last year they didnt have the same vigor. Good all around, lots of variation in fruit size.

Berkley Tie Dye - didnt perform well in 2 plantings in 2 soil beds. Gonna run it again.

If you have any questions, these are the varieties Ive grown, with the exception of the White Tomesol.

Do yourself a favor, find and Try Mark Twain as a beefsteak, it's very amazing. I would also rec Opalka which looks like a Roma on steroids, but with a much better fresh taste. I could go down the list from there but those are the top two for me. Both open pollinated heirlooms. Prudent's Purple gets honorable mention as a beefsteak. Sun Gold is my fav cherry tomato........like candy. It's now available as seed, it's a patented plant. Hybrid so the seeds are a crap shoot.
Fedco seeds def has the MarkTwain and maybe all of those others. Only one gardener makes Mark Twain and their 2020 crop got wiped out by whatever , not available last year....but they are back now....I got a snootful in case next year is a bust. :)

They look like a Roma....but they can get to a lb. In this pic there are 3......9 oclock, center, 3 oclock. The round ones are mark twain. Both produce until frost. maters.jpg

Started some things, here's the first run of this years medicinals. Some we have grown in years past, some are new to us. The wife really wants to get into herbology, and with her recent diagnosis it will likely be highly beneficial for us moving forward.
PXL_20210304_000622008.jpg

Ive grown other peppers, Ill grow a few more varieties later in the season. Beaver Dams and Jimmy Nardellos are lifers. Anaheims and Anchos a must. Chocolates have consistently been our sweetest bell for 4 years (have tried several italian varieties, Tequilla Sunrise, Purple). Lemon Habaneros I failed at last year so Im running them again, the Puma and Tobago are new to me and chosen simply because they look beautiful, and they are allegedly moderate to hot, I tend to shy away from super hots or peppers that are too small, learned that lesson after growing too successfully the Biquinho pepper last year, and the Aji Chaparita, hardly, as well.

The wife wants to do a 3' x 5' flower bed, shes got lily and tulip bulbs from the last 2 years, she wants to add some dwarf sunflowers. We have some Indonesian Kennikura Cosmos we'll add, maybe some Giant Yellow Marigolds, Lorenzia Gallardias, and Benary's Giant Zinnias, as the weather continues to warm.

Would you chileheads think it is a viable option to go to my local mexican food store and get dried chillies and try to grow those from seed? I am not looking for the strongest burning scorpions, as those would be unusable in my kitchen, and I like the more flavourful, mellower mexicanos.. I think I need to go shopping today for heated seedling dome anyhow.. Aero cloner for cuttings might be cool too..

Baker Creek has free shipping over 5 bucks, a number of traditional heirloom varieties as well as a few more exotic options. Id start there. They are shipping pretty quick right now.

Gonna try to germinate these seeds outside with the lids on for a couple days to hopefully trap heat and encourage germination. Ive never done this this way, and its my first year using soil blocks, and my first impromptu soil block mix... No clue if it will work. Historically this particular yarrow (Colorado Mix) has failed to germ for me 3 years running, and the chamomile has been a challenge, but Ive managed a couple every year (with 4 plantings a year). Everything else has been grown in years past without note. The yarrow and chamomile are now in their 4th year, not expecting much. Dont mean to high jack the thread, just like sharing the non canna with folks who appreciate it.
