Cut Vale Tudo tonight and harvested about 30 very mature, dark seeds of
STRAWBERRY FIGHT MILK, the cross with "Frosty the Ghash Man" aka strawberry shampoo sticky icky aka Baked Strawberry Ghash. I'm genuinely having a hard time finding words to express how excited I am for those, they'll go down after some time in the fridge. Getting the seeds out of Vale Tudo is obnoxious, it's stickier than a fucking rat-sized glue trap.
I've been thinking about the different methods of breeding and their effects. My general theory is that F1's from two quality unrelated plants will produce a range of geno/phenotypes with greater
hybrid vigor,
transgressive segregation, and less
inbreeding depression (see: purebred dogs and their genetic weaknesses) than an inbred line or backcrossing, which produce a more consistent range of geno/phenotypes with less vigor over time. I've observed this firsthand a few times, as strains like (Uzbekistan x Nepalma) raced ahead of worked lines like Killer Queen plants that were germinated months before.
I don't want new growers to worry about babying weak plants that can barely hold up a leaf node, let alone a cola. Likewise, I don't want old heads saying that my babies are weak or complaining about excessive phenotypical variation (not that I think that'll be a problem with more trichomes on that Chocolate Thai x Lemon Thai dude than in some hash that I've seen for sale up here). I think next year is the time for incorporating selfing into things, which like backcrossing adds another dimension of lowering the potential dangers of inbreeding depression while adding consistency to the offspring- Todd McCormick told me that it's how Sam altered the genetics of Skunk 1 from heterozygous to homozygous.
So I suppose what I do is kind of half and half. It's relatively rare that I run straight up IBL's of anything past F2, since I appreciate vigorous plants and new experiences, but I'm thinking that I'll make it a policy not to keep lines pure past F2 to give myself some artificially imposed boundaries on chucks going forward. What I'm mostly focused on is hybrid vigor, trusting that I can keep lines separate enough to not have locked out, flaccid-ass, hermie-prone plants from their offspring. The G13 Haze/Hazeplant/Green Manalishi will go into the blender a few different times at least, likewise the fruity plants will remain segregated and be crossed amongst themselves and possibly backcrossed to Frosty the Ghash Man.
Speaking of which, there are a few lines that I made where I'm either working with the offspring already (they were backup seeds in case the first drops didn't germ) or just won't end up having space to grow. I'm in need of a few dollars to make ends meet, so anyone on here can PM me with an offer for dibs, shipping is 15 bucks. First come, first served. Don't be shy!
