That reminds me; now that you've caught a Catfish, watch the pectoral and dorsal fins as they have bones that are really sharp. Personally I haven't been stabbed by a Catfish but I'm pretty sure that's just a matter of time lol. Been bitten by quite a few of them but not stabbed as of yet.
Oh man when I pulled that catfish up I was like a kid that caught a bluegill for the first time, arm stretched out staring with mild trepidation wondering how tf i was going to get it off for a solid minute lol but luckily i still had a doggie bag in my pocket and used it as a glove but yeah I couldn’t remember which fins were the pokey ones so it took a while to even grab it… I need to watch more catfish videos but a lot of the ones I have watched don’t show themselves removing hook/holding it with all the editing and what not

If you see me on fire fuck the block button get an extinguisher lol. Or some marshmallows though I feel that'll affect flavor. "Screaming Smores" could totally be a thing lol.
That’s reminds me of when I did my fire training a few years back in a gas created scenario Fire . The instructor had the flames up too high and kept telling me in my gear to keep pushing forward . Anyway long story short I came out with no eyebrows looking like I’d been on Chemo for a month . Not happy .
I’m like “ what part of my ears are melting “ don’t you understand ?

LOL I got your back sis:

That's Luke from Cats and Carp, and I quite like his videos. There's good info in that one and he even shows how to do it based on size of Catfish, and how to safely hold them :)

LOL! As a Rammstein fan part of me was thinking about how many times those guys have used a "dragon mask" where you shoot a flame thrower off your face. I imagine they get cooked every now and then LOL.

So you say you been bit by them a bunch? huh, so when you are "noodling" so you shove your fist in thier mouth in a way that they dont have the power to bite down at that point?

Noodling is actually illegal here in Michigan, though I do understand how it works; basically when they spawn, you find a "hole" in the river, and yeah you block the hole first, like with your feet, and then reach in and let it bite, and grab the jaw. You press down on the bottom of the mouth so they can't clamp down as hard (a 40+ pounder can easily drown you) and pull them out.

I've never done it personally, but I've had multiple Channel Cats destroy my knuckles while I was grabbing them from the water (didn't have a landing net lol) and I've also been bitten by my Amazonian Red Tail Catfish while feeding him. He's never drawn blood though cause he knows my taste and smell so he's never actually clamped down on my hand. But yeah bro a bunch of Channel Catfish have bitten me quite a few times. When I don't have a net it's not really a big deal unless they're over 10 pounds; I had one attempt to break my wrist when I went to grab it, as he stated spinning as soon as I grabbed him and they can spin really fast. I guess it would be not unlike putting a spinning metal vice with sand paper and lock your hand in it. Eventually I twisted with the fish and got him out of the water. Lol Catfish are like the only fish that will still try to fight you once on land; I've had one use his pectoral fin and lean to one side and try to hammer it into my leg while I was taking the hook out. I saw it and moved so he missed, but I know of other people not move and get a sharp bone go right in. Some species even have a venom on the bones but only like one species has venom strong enough to kill a human. The others it just apparently hurts a lot. I've stepped on a nail before so I imagine it'd be like that other than nails not have serrated edges like a Catfish poke does.

A jaw off a 2ft Great White a mate caught on a hand line years ago . They pulled up behind an Island , dropped anchor and all went to bed . Before they did he threw out a hook on a hand line and just left it tied to the bulwarks . When he woke up hours later he pulled it up and the shark was still hanging off it dead . He was going to throw it away but I claimed it . It’s not properly finished as it’s very brittle and working on it is kind of risky . 2A95D092-F668-4804-9561-CB60982D0311.jpeg

Got out wading the river this morning. Tried and tried to get some topwater action, but no dice. Finally gave up and tied on an old reliable June Bug plastic, and whammo! About a 20 incher on the third cast. That's a trophy Shoal Bass around these parts, but no camera, so I guess it didn't really happen! Brawny SOB, though! Just happy to get out, bad wheels and all.

Good to see people are getting out(vital for mental health, imo), and also that they are catching some fish(Bonus!) (y)

I've been continuing to fish lots, mostly in the river with middling results. Yesterday I dragged my lazy ass over to a lake and spent the afternoon playing with slough sharks from the boat. Caught a handful and had lots of hits. Nothing big landed, but they all fought hard.

Eventually the ski boat asshole blasting Achy Breaky Fucking Heart helped me decide it was time to go home. Managed to get broken off on a slip bobber rig while I was loading the car. Bugger ran for the weeds and I couldn't turn him.

That's okay. We'll meet again, my finny friend. ;)

I haven't gotten to fish much recently, but yesterday I was in a grocery store, and the Wife and I were taking bottles back, and the machine got filled up, so I went in to tell someone at the counter about it and I can hear a young dude reading my tee shirt out loud so, here's what happened:

Him: "I fish for Catfish, everything else is just bait ????"

Him walking passed me while I'm at the counter: "Bass are better!"

Me: "For bait"

Him: "WHAAAAAT?!?!?!? *Whips out his phone and pops up a picture*

Me: "That a Pike?"

Him: "Yeah! 42 inches!"

Me: "Nice!"

Him: "Yeah bet you ain't using THAT for bait!"

Me, unable to shut my mouth even though I hear the irritation in his voice: "Maybe for a Flathead!"

Old dude I'm guessing was his Grandpa with him laughing his ass off.

Poor kid. Ah well.

We don't really have that here. Do you guys argue over the "best" species in OZ, @Ramjet159 ?
I really don't care what the next guy is fishing for, as long as he doesn't crowd me.

The closest thing we have here is fly-fishermen vs hardware guys but that often comes down to a class thing, blue collar vs white collar kind of deal.

I took an old tuna fishing co worker out shark net fishing with us for a trip once and he’d handled plenty of tuna in his time but never sharks so I kindly reminded him the main difference is that sharks have teeth , yeah pretty obvious I know . Anyway we start recovering our nets on a hydraulic hauling drum and sure enough a bronze whaler shark about 2.5 feet long comes aboard . He instantly grabs it by the tail while it’s heads stuck in the net . I’m like mate I wouldn’t do that if I were you . Grabbing by the tail is not a good idea . Cradle the torso midriff for better control . Believe me when I say sharks are incredibly strong bastards . He’s straight back at me I’ve been fishing for years , I’m no rookie blah blah blah . I’m like ok whatever . Way you go then . He tussles with it for about a minute slowly unhooking the net from around its jawline and no sooner was it free the shark spins around on its body length and latches onto his knee cap perfectly . I’m in the old trying not to piss myself laughing but acting concerned at the same time knowing if it gos bezerk he’s in strife .
Ahhhhh ahhhhhh he’s screaming like a bitch while I’m trying to lever it’s jaw open with my butcher knife . Don’t move and trust me !!! He’s still squealing GET IT OFF !!!!!
I’m like For fuck sake shut up and stop moving . Eventually I get enough pressure release to virtually rip it off hoping for minimum damage . It’s pulled a perfect frypan shaped circle out of his brand new waders and track pants underneath and luckily for him together they were both thick enough to insulate his leg from the teeth penetrations leaving only a few pinholes here and there in his flesh .
His turned ghostly white and I figure learnt his lesson so I just mutter “ Not a rookie hey ? “ and leave it at that .
