Gotcha :) I do love Sturgeon and want to actually land one some day. I fish from shore and I know it's possible because my Grandpa got one when I was little. Can only imagine the fight lol, specially on a larger one.

Do you ever use those Golden Eye for bait? I imagine they'd work pretty well.
Goldeye are listed as a game fish, so not allowed.

Parts of Game Fish: Only the skin, fins, eyes and dead eggs of game fish may be used as bait, provided these fish were lawfully caught by angling.

The sturgeon fight yesterday was awesome. Drag peeling run after run and one jump where she completely cleared the water about 8 feet from me:eek::love:. I was alone so I had to play her out pretty good in order to land her. That and all the pointy, sharp, skin-tearing bits she has meant I didn't want any thrashing while I handled her. :)

What size rod are you using on these beasts?? 5000? 6000? Bigger? I can only imagine it'd be like hooking onto the bumper of a truck, like a huge pike.
Kudos for getting her on the bank!!! I'd brown my shorts if I caught a monster like that.

That's the big question about fishing the North Saskatchewan River: what gear to use?

Given that the rig I caught the sturgeon on will also catch mooneye, goldeye, walleye, northern pike, burbot, sauger, longnose sucker, white sucker, redhorse sucker and rocky mountain whitefish, and that the source of the twitch on the rod could be anywhere from 1/2 a pound to 150 pounds, the obvious question is WTF? ;)

I generally try to find a middle ground with rods and reels and give myself an edge with up-sized braid for line.

I have 9-10 foot heavy-duty rods with huge reels full of 60 lb braid which are obviously best for sturgeon, but take the fun out of fighting anything smaller so I only use them if I am specifically targeting dinos(uncommon).
I have ultralight gear that makes fighting the goldeye and moonies a blast, but anything bigger will probably snap me off, so it rarely sees the river.

I usually use medium to med-heavy rods with matching reels with 20 pound braid and flouro leaders. This gives me a more than sporting chance at any walleye or pike, still makes playing the smaller guys fun, and gives me a chance at sturgeon up to maybe 40-50 pounds. That's what I caught yesterday's fish on.
After 30+ years on the river, this setup seems to serve me best.

Here's an example. This is a medium, where med-heavy is probably better for the river.

I've heard of areas where you aren't allowed to use game fish. Here we can use essentially whatever we can legally catch in the same Water to avoid cross contamination.

I'm sure some people are confused when I'm riding a whole yellow Perch out on a hook lol. I use fairly heavy gear as I pretty much target Catfish. I do have smaller stuff for love Walleye and whatever else, but my travels well setup is currently an Ugly Stik Catfish Edition with a Penn Fathom Lever Drag Reel size 15 with 50 pound mono main line. Drag is set so that it will max out at 10 pounds, so that way nothing will snap and I used a down rigger canon ball to set it.

The heaviest I have is an XH Big Cat Fever Rod with a Penn Fathom Lever Drag Reel size 25. I feel like that one will handle a Sturgeon so at least I have a chance lol.

Honestly I've had Channel Cats only like 11 pounds almost wear through 40 pound Mono so I gear up for when I hook into a true monster size.

I do like Carp as well, and they get huge at times; our tackle state record is 45 pounds, but 61 pounds or so have been caught too. Not sure if that was spear or net really as you can user other methods for Carp here. Personally I go with Strawberry dough, though I've only landed Snapping Turtles on that so far lol.

6.87lb largemouth :fastparrot: man i wish I took a proper length measurement i could’ve had me a nice lil certificate for this Big Bertha here. Everytime I’ve caught my new PB it’s been by more than an inch so there’s a 7 pounder in my future! Recently broke off on one that i’m sure was 5+ but I tied a shit knot and had my drag waaay too tight ?

Also accidentally caught a catfish for the first time in my life on a 5 inch plastic worm and I see why people enjoy them. Couldn’t have been even 2 pounds and was pulling drag like a monsta! Now that I know they’re in there i’m thinking of all the times i’ve probably had a catifish bite and I thought it was a hyuuuuge bass lol

Hehe, a guy was fishing with me and he was used to southern ocean fishing in line Florida or something and almost lost his gear to a 2 or 3 pound Channel Cat. He had a hit and it started dragging his Rod into the river and he drove after it and landed it lol.

Normally I'm Catfishing and catch bass by accident, but if you do enjoy Catfish it's pretty easy to get them as you can use almost any critter as bait lol. Glad you got one!

Man, what a pig! That's a beauty, right there! Your buddy must've been catching Specks, or Sea Trout, @Psychobilly - Redfish in FL pull like freight trains!

I've never fished the Ocean personally, though I've seen people fishing the Amazon using the Reels you normally see for Bluefin Tuna, as a huge Piraiba can not only capsize a boat, the record fish (I'm using record loosely as commercial caught Piraiba have weighed over 600 pounds, like the Mekong Giant Catfish) the guy who gaffed that Catfish had his shoulder partially dislocated. Catfish are certified monsters and easily my favorite thing to catch. I do see guys on TV catching Redfish and others, but personally I'd be going after Tarpon; that's a bucket list fish for me lol.

Hey, ya got leaves on your fish. But I bet that hat could double as a decent emergency fishing net. I'll switch my marketing gears
I was lowkey kinda scared when i took it out the water and didn’t have a good grip on the lip and well ??‍♀️ lmao

Never seen such a thick lip on a fish and huge tongue had to constantly remind myself in my head that it can’t hurt me ?

That reminds me; now that you've caught a Catfish, watch the pectoral and dorsal fins as they have bones that are really sharp. Personally I haven't been stabbed by a Catfish but I'm pretty sure that's just a matter of time lol. Been bitten by quite a few of them but not stabbed as of yet.
