Who loves fishing ?

I presumed so.
The instrument I think of when I think of the ocean is the sextant, presumably from old movies. I am familiar with most of the names you mentioned though, some from drafting.

As you say, it would be crazy to rely solely on electronics, but check out the number of times Search and Rescue gets called for people that thought they could head out into the back country with only their phone. It's ridiculous how much people trust a device.

Yeah I agree . Only fools don’t respect the sea . Same would apply to hiking through certain terrain . Be prepared as nature shows no sympathy
I had to use a sextant when I initially studied to obtain my qualifications which was pretty interesting to say the least but I’d be in trouble if I had to use one today it’s been so long .
What annoys me is when Emergency services have to go out in perilous conditions to save an idiot you described and risk their own life .

Thought surely a few guys in this joint would be keen fishermen . A few pics from today’s land based fishing trip . Love Google earth to find new spots along the coast before I leave home where I’ve never been before . This lake is an hour and a half or so from my place. Looks like it's almost time.

These guys are out on 2-1/2" of ice. I've done it, it's scary, but it's a rush.

That’s looks like super fun . I’d love to try that . Those fish look like they’re in excellent condition as well ? Is it just the time of year or are they always that fat ?
Can you see fish moving under the ice or do they detect you well before you see them ? Would you still go out on the ice if no one else was around ? Seems risky even with a backup plan ??‍♂️

Your a lucky man . Sounds like the place to be . Even if your not fishing to just sit back and crack a beer and watch the world go by . Do you have those river barge / tugs go past ?

It is absolutely risky. It is foolish and stupid and nobody in their right mind would do it.

I'm going to wait until there are three inches of ice. :stoned:

A guy takes precautions. These guys are pretty well prepared with their picks and life jackets and spare clothes. One thing they don't have is a bar for checking the ice as you walk, commonly called a "spud bar". You chip at the ice ahead of you, checking for thickness, air bubbles frozen in the ice, weak spots around vegetation, etc.

Going out in the bush alone is foolhardy, regardless of the season, but that is the story of my life. I spend most of my time alone and am very accustomed to it. I take extra precautions, and I also accept that there is a good chance that I will die out there, eventually. Hopefully I'll be in my 90's when it happens. :)

-------------------------

Seeing the fish through the ice is rare and magical. There is usually snow cover and in many lakes the water clarity makes it impossible anyway. That is one of the reasons some of us go out on early ice in dangerous conditions. A lot of people wait until after the New Year when they can drive their vehicles on the lake.
You never know how the fish will react. They may spook at any motion, or they may ignore your presence.

This lake is fairly remote and has a good natural food supply. Those fish are generally fat and healthy. Rainbow trout are commonly stocked around here and grow quite quickly and the tigers are a sterile hybrid that grows very fast and feeds aggressively. The tigers are catch-and-release only in this lake and some are now getting massive.

It’s a real treat seeing how others around the world adapt to conditions and make the most of it . I’m a little older now but 15 years ago my mate and I were those two crazy clowns when nobody else would go out in a boat in those conditions we revelled in it .Not to the point of dangerous , just cold and miserable stay home weather . It was even more of a buzz when we caught fish in ordinary conditions with not one other person around knowing we had the whole bay to ourself .
I could never live away from water . The cities make me feel restricted and choked up and sure I can head in to watch major sport or a rock concert but then I’m straight out again .
I do a lot of moonlight fishing at night as well . Again not so many people are out on the water because it takes a degree of confidence and we have a lot of fish farms around our bay and mussel farms so you have to travel with caution .
The Tigers are sterile to control numbers I’m guessing so they don’t dominate and take over the habitat ?

have 3 - 6 foot windows (looking out on river) - if I really want to be a fisherman - I put line in off balcony, go inside and watch the line form in side house - A true sportman's !!!!!

Their main attraction is how quickly they grow and how aggressively they feed and fight. Just like with cannabis, other species can exhibit hybrid vigour. Tigers are F1's. Sterility is a significant factor, but since most trout require running water to spawn, and most of the lakes they are stocked in don't have that, there is very limited reproduction anyway.
----------------

I feel reborn since getting out of the city. Having the river so close and most people far away is fantastic.

I was walking up to the post office yesterday and a big white SUV, with all the windows tinted black, pulled up. We both went in to check our mail and I said " I just moved from the city, I was expecting a gangsta to get out of that." (for clarity, gangstas come in all the shades of the rainbow in Edmonton)

The chubby gal giggled and said "No gangstas around here", and we went on our ways.

You have just described my dream.
If I won the lottery, my home would have a floating deck where I could step out of my kitchen and sit and have a cup of tea and a wake and bake while the fish jump around me.

Mid May this year (wife's bday) we went to Bishop for 8 days. Camped just above the East Fork of Bishop Creek at Four Jeffery campground. Not only did we catch trout but we both caught a large mouth bass in the Owen's River. Awesome trip. This coming May we plan to do it again but for 2 weeks at Kennedy Meadows, an hour south of Bishop.

Can't wait to go again. On Nov 16 Dixon Lake, literally down the street is planting 3k pounds of trout and holding their opener on Sat the 20th. We plan to spent the day on the following Wed, senior day. Boat and 2 fishing passes $30. Wohlford should also start planting soon. They're 10 minutes further down the street. Work usually slows in Dec so I try to get a few days in. It's never enough though.

Been ordering gear this year for bass as well. New worms and o-rings (as a plumber I gotta try those) and several large frogs. We've seen 8-10 pounders under the boat in winter. They just sit there in 8' water. They've been eaten those feeder fish trout they keep planting. There was like 25 pounder there at one time called Dotti. Pretty cool story.

Wow. Messed up. Never heard about this guy but I moved here 8 years ago from Orange County. Use to drive down here (90 min) to fish Wohlford. They had these like 300 sq.ft shacks for $20 a night back in the day. Today they're renting them out month to month.

Use to rent those for a weekend in spring to fish for big bass and trout. I've seen 'em they're in there but I don't have any trout as bait?
