This is a very interesting theory, especially since one of my grow methods incorporates a water chiller for the roots. The water can get down to 64F, and "feels" colder than that. I may have an opportunity to somewhat test that theory soon. Although not the same strains, I have an unchilled F&D starting up soon, running around the same time as the chilled RDWC.
I bet you see some color differences in that side by side

I love tests like that. Just messing around anyway. Fun.

Water chiller, are you talking hydro? Cooling to 64 degrees? That is pretty warm compared to outdoor winter here which is more like low 50s at best. In pots they get warmed up sometimes. Soil outdoors may be different, I don't usually run indoors in warm weather.

I will keep a closer eye on root temps just for fun.

yes hydro. I think that if the roots are cold, they don't take up nutes as well as warmer roots, but cold water can hold more dissolved oxygen and help keep pathogens at bay. I believe one of the keys to DWC/RDWC is that supercharged oxygenated water.

Yup you want some kind of waterfall for DO or bubblers. A recirculating system is ideal imo. Did one a couple years ago and it was fun, plants vegged in a hurry too lol.

come to think of it, fade was more remarkable in RDWC than F&D, but that could've been the lights and/or environment as well. I'm leaning towards lights.

Recirculating is overall the better way to go, I agree. Even recirculating a single bucket just keeps things mixed up and aerated better than a regular DWC in my experience. I've had single bucket DWC get into root trouble quicker than RDWC. There is something about the undercurrent flow I think. Maybe it keeps things from settling at the bottom and potentially building up too much? If it had waterfall action that probably wouldn't hurt either.
I'm currently using air stone discs. Was gonna go the soaker hose route but I've found it to be cumbersome so far in a couple of attempts. If I had several coils of it I woulda tried to experiment but I need a couple solid runs and I know that air stones work.

Dude I can't keep up with you guys lol. I thought you were only running f&d. I was just throwing my .2 in on rdwc because the topic popped up. But ya recirculating seems to not only keep the res more healthy but the plants love it. And there's nothing wrong with air stones, I went to the waterfall because I was tired of hearing air pumps more than anything ?.

Lol the funny part? I have an industrial air pump that I'm replacing with a medical pump, supposed to be a lot quieter butpre expensive. My GF and I both missed the air pump noise after we shut it down. We had that brrrraaaahhhhhhhhhh on for 3 months lol. Now she says that the whole house sounds like someone's taking a piss with all the water action everywhere lol

Good morning

I was wondering about rigging something like that with a small exterior inline pump recirculating top to bottom in an UC 8 gal. bucket?
Could even run through a chiller?
Something for the pheno party.
Sounds great man do it up. What would you do with the bigass 3" pipe holes on either side? Rig some plumbing?

You ever thought of getting a Blowes 5gal square bucket or tote and doing this? The UC buckets are damn expensive and I would leave it as is in case you wanna hook it all up again. Shit those bulkheads alone are almost $20 lol

It's funny how you get used to noises. So what now you guys feel like you need to pee all the time lol

I wish I could do hydro, I am interested but my grow has to move between in & out. I can’t grow in ground either, pots only.

Being coastal here I am a bit more temperate than most. Much cooler summers then inland.

A greenhouse is in my dreams where I could do hydro, but what would I do with more weed…

Roots could have play there too. Roots definitely have a lot of control over the plant lol. Those random observations from years of watching hold some value amigo....... I'm gonna drop ya a link, I have two kits from these guys. They're FAE system is cool on these kits, it eliminates the need to fan the tub out a couple times a day, HEPA filtered too so less chance of contamination. Check out what they have, a lot of this is pretty easy to put together yourself. But I went the kit way when I started too. It got me on the right track right out of the gate

You are the second one to recommend that kit to me. Thanks for that. Must be an omen. Time to join in the fun.

You know, it actually has a water feature effect, all zen like LMAO ? this pond run will have two different types with rushing water, draining water, bubbled water, churning water, so it'll be like in the heart of an aquarium store near a babbling brook lol

Hi, sound like you have it worked out, but if air stones interest you again, the Alita 25l is really quiet, a little vibration, running a 1/2 manifold with whips for stones.
Those viviosun ones are noisy and make real good heaters.
I’ve thought about running a waterfall, doesn’t seem necessary for me right now.
You can take that single bucket and add a control bucket, piped together with 2" pvc and uniseals. Makes checking things easier, res changes too.
Hey guys, I guess this is why you flash your stuff?
Thanks for looking out, I agree, for sure.
You guys just holler “GET OFF MY LAWN”, not sure exact etiquette?
Don’t want to rut up anyone’s yard!:)

I’ve got a system and I have a few of the single site they sold cheap last year, in case I want to add or this?
I have an extra chiller, hmmm?
Take up a lot of room. :cautious:
Nothing beats rdwc for hydro to me. It’s not just the growth, crap, how much do we need:weedleaf:
Initially, I bought plain square buckets, but I think the components of the UC are really nice. Expensive, long term durability, with drain out feature, I’ll chin that bar!
Design needed tweaking, which is one reason I LOVE hydro, lots of stuff to mess with.
I copied (H) a modification to pull from both sides of the rez, bigger pump for better flow and more balance for monitoring, I love Guardians.
The f & d works too and a lot simpler.
I like it for solo’s.

How long have your guardian probes lasted? What do you typically clean them with? The PPM probe looks like it doesn't need replacing at all, it's hardwired in.
