I contacted Angus @ The Real Seed Co and this is his explination of lineage.
hi SD,
Thanks for getting in touch
As per the description, the Afghaan 90 was acquired by us c. 1990 in Amsterdam, then stored
I don't exactly know what you mean by "how many times has it been reproduced?"
The strain has clearly been inbred in Holland for at least a few years pre. 1990
In other words, it's not a "landrace", which is why we sell it as an "heirloom"
Anything else, let me know
Best wishes,
Angus
"Us" is vaguer than I'd like, but okay (ideal would be "I purchased them"). So someone he's partnered with "acquired" them. That would make his knowledge secondary not primary.
When people are squirrelly my hackles go up... how would someone not understand the question "how many times has it been reproduced" that seems like a fairly clear question, particularly if the answer is "once" (I found one reference online that indicated it was reproduced once to generate the seeds for sale so that seems like a plausible answer). Weird that he wouldn't just say once if that was the case.
What I was really curious about (obviously I could just ask myself) is how many seeds they started with, how many germinated, and how many males and how many females were used to make the seeds currently for sale. Also, what kind of packaging were the 1990 seeds in.
Clearly I'm a bit of a skeptic on this. One way or another a 1990 seedline has obvious value. I just wish there was a little more info, e.g. simply saying which seedbank they were acquired from would tell us something.
